His large presence, gangly walk and intense eyes create a character all of their own, and I'm pretty sure that everyone in the audience was feeling exactly like those in the town hall when he self destructs. It was uncomfortable, but utterly captivating, and once again, Jessica Chastain, pitch perfect as the comforting and loving mother and wife. On second viewing, Chastain shines through even more, and her importance is paramount in that incredibly powerful, moving, climactic scene where Curtis overcomes his fear.The ending will divide users, but I absolutely loved the direction it went in.This may be way off the mark, but so often, people, like Michael Shannon's Curtis, coupled with a family history of mental illness, and a family of his own to look after, will look to a grounded, medical opinion to certify them as crazy, prescribe a treatment and cope, when the alternative answer is much harder to fathom, and seek.The easy way out would be to solely credit the events of the film to Curtis, but the point seems to be that fear affects everyone, in a variety of forms, and isn't going away. The storm may have cleared, and Curtis may have been proven right, but what of the impending tornado and destruction that will ensue? NEW YORK?? Apple's new iPhone went on sale in stores across the globe on Friday, prompting thousands to line uparound city blocks to snap up the final gadget unveiled during Steve Jobs' life.
Shares of Apple rose 2 percent in early trading after lines wound down the streets of Sydney, Tokyo, London, Paris and Munich to get their hands on the iPhone 4S, despite criticism about the lack of a design revolution and reports of software glitches.
"I am a fan, a big fan. I want something to remember Steve Jobs by," said Haruko Shiraishi, waiting patiently with her Yorkshire terrier Miu Miu at the end of an eight-block linein Tokyo's smart Ginza shopping district.

In New York, some consumers got up early to buy the phone. While the line outside Apple's flagship Manhattan store no longer extended around the block after a half-hour of sales, more people joined it as the morning progressed.
The new model looks similar to the previous iPhone 4, but has an upgraded camera, faster processor, enhanced security and voice-activated software, which lets users ask the phone questions. The voice software drew glowing reviews.
"I had been thinking of this phone for a long time," said Chad Bullar, 23, a New York University student who is buying the phone for its new messaging service and the voice software. "I was going to wait for the iPhone 5, but that seems like a year away, so I got this one."
The phone -- unveiled just a day before Jobs died -- was initially dubbed a disappointment because it looks the same as the last iPhone. But anticipation of the "Siri" voice software helped it set a record with initial online orders on October 7.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and his executive team hope the first device sold without their visionary leader at the helm will protect the company against a growing challenge from the likes of archrival Samsung Electronics.
The South Korean company, which powers its phones with Google's Android software, expects to overtake Apple as the world's biggest smartphone vendor in terms of unit sales for the third quarter.
"(Jobs) made everything better and the products he released were thought through in such detail," Duncan Hoare in London said, after a loud roar greeted the opening of the store. "It was about the beauty of something and the simplicity."
Apple does not release sales on launch day, so gauging initial figures is difficult. However, it took more than 1 million online orders in the first 24 hours after its release, exceeding the 600,000 for the iPhone 4, which was sold in fewer countries initially.
"Despite the initial disappointment that this wasn't an iPhone 5, the reality is we're still seeing the usual frenzy that we've got used to on launch day," analyst Ben Wood at CCS Insight told Reuters. Analysts expect global sales of a few million phones on the first weekend, he added.
Unlike many in Tokyo, shoppers in European cities told Reuters they wanted the phone because it was a "lifestyle choice" and not necessarily a tribute to Jobs.
"I need a new one since my dog destroyed my old 3GS," said Gaby Wunder-Sambale, 45, shivering in Frankfurt.
Despite the enthusiasm at Apple stores, the launch was marred somewhat by widespread complaints this week on the Internet about problems downloading iOS 5, the latest version of Apple's mobile software.
There were also problems with iCloud, Apple's online communications, media storage and backup service formally launched on Wednesday, with users reporting glitches such as losing their email access.
Lines in Paris were smaller than those normally seen for a brand-new iPhone, with some fans there wondering if the somewhat underwhelming introduction had put people off, but in London and elsewhere the lines were as long as ever.
On Regent Street in central London, the line wound down a side street and into a park, where Starbucks had a mobile stand to serve coffee. Of the 40 people to whom Reuters spoke in London, 13 were switching from other phones.
"This is rubbish," one buyer at a north London store said, holding his Blackberry after owner Research in Motion struggled for days to fix an international outage of its email and messaging services.
Jobs shaddow over iPhone launch
The vast majority of the iPhone 4S buyers who Reuters interviewed in Sydney, France and Frankfurt were existing Apple customers, many having bought the original iPhone and subsequent upgrades.
"Since Jobs died, I wanted to make sure I had a new iPhone with some advantages over the old," said iPhone devotee Mark Du, who expressed concern about future gadgets without Jobs in charge.
Apple fans in Sydney, Tokyo, Frankfurt and London made sure Jobs was part of the iPhone 4S launch, with flower, candle and photo shrines to the late Apple boss erected outside stores. A black-and-white picture of Jobs in Covent Garden carried the line, "Let's make a dent in the universe."
Underscoring the enthusiasm for the new phone, Japanese mobile carrier Softbank Corp had to temporarily stop contract applications after its computer system was overwhelmed with more requests than it had expected.
Some analysts expect fourth-quarter iPhone shipments to reach 30 million or more, almost twice as many as a year ago.
Apple's fifth-generation iPhone uses chips from Qualcomm Inc, Toshiba and a host of smaller semiconductor companies, according to repair firm iFixit, which cracked the device open on Thursday.
The iPhone -- seen as the gold standard for smartphones -- is Apple's highest-margin product and accounts for 40 percent of its annual revenue.
Analysts point to several factors in Apple's favor: a $199 price that matches up well with rival devices; availability promised on more than 100 carriers by the end of 2011, far more than its predecessors; and glowing reviews.
Apple shares were up 2 percent at $415.56 in early trading.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? A U.S. District Court judge has dismissed the lawsuit alleging that the makers of "The Hurt Locker" improperly used the story of a real Iraqi bomb-disposal expert in their Oscar-winning film.
Sgt. Jeffrey Sarver's entire lawsuit was thrown out by judge Jacqueline Nguyen, and Sarver was ordered to pay the attorney's fees incurred by the filmmakers defending the lawsuit.
Sarver's lawsuit initially targeted a number of those involved with the film, including screenwriter Mark Boal, director Kathryn Bigelow, production company Voltage, distributor Summit Entertainment and Playboy magazine, for whom Boal wrote the article that inspired the film.
Over the last two-and-a-half years, the case was moved from New Jersey to California, and Sarver's lawyers dropped their claims against Playboy and Summit.
"he value of 'The Hurt Locker' unquestionably derived from the creativity and skill of the writer, directors and producers who conceived, wrote, directed, edited and produced it," Nguyen wrote in her opinion dismissing the case.
Sarver's attorney, Todd Weglarz, said he would appeal.
Attorney Jeremiah Reynolds, who represented Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow, called the ruling "a huge victory for all filmmakers who should feel comfortable using real life events as inspiration for their films. No artist should ever be forced to create entire fictional worlds that have no basis in reality simply because they fear the threat of meritless lawsuits."
Boal wrote "The Hurt Locker" after being embedded with a bomb disposal unit in Iraq for an article in Playboy magazine. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
Sarver had alleged that the character played by Jeremy Renner was based on himself.
"On a certain level, I'm flattered that a real soldier saw himself in the fictional character," Boal told TheWrap shortly after the case was dismissed. "But at the same time, the character was based in a lot of different people that I talked to, and for him to claim that he was the hero of the movie definitely took something away from all the other guys that I talked to, guys that are contributing on a daily basis."
As a veteran journalist, Boal added, he resented Sarver's contention that he used the soldier as a model and then deprived him of credit or compensation.
"I'm somebody who has spent a fair amount of time as a reporter, digging up sources, talking to sources and honoring sources," he said. "And for somebody to call that into question makes the judge's ruling that much more gratifying."

J-Walt Adamczyk, creator of ?Spontaneous Fantasia,? brings art to the traditionally science-oriented campus planetarium.

Animation is conventionally known as a series of prerecorded images that move to give the impression of life. However, one artist?s works are giving a new meaning to the traditional definition of animation.
John Walter Adamczyk, better known by his moniker J-Walt, works with real-time animation, creating animations on the fly with the help of technology and his imagination. His current work is titled ?Spontaneous Fantasia,? which he has performed in the campus planetarium since 2007.
Born in Evanston, Ill. in 1955, Adamczyk?s first animations were clay animations that he did while in high school. One of his frustrations at the time was the difficulty of creating a high-quality animation, complete with music.
?Now making animations and videos is super simple, and to me that means ?ok that?s easy, let?s push it, let?s do more,?? said Adamczyk.
Adamczyk came to California to pursue an education in animation at USC and CalArts. The animation industry was in a depression when he first started studying, said Adamczyk.
?It wasn?t much of an industry, and there weren?t many jobs but the people that were into animation were really into it and the people that were doing it did it for the love of it,? Adamczyk said.
After graduating, Adamczyk found that computer animation wasn?t being used as it is today.
?Computer animation was mostly focused on commercials and there was very little in the way of feature films work.?
Before starting his work with real-time animation, Adamczyk experimented with other forms of animation. Some of his works include ?Somnambulence,? a nighttime car ride simulation, and ?Canon,? a colorful animation synchronized to multiple tones.
Adamczyk was inspired by classic movies from the Golden age of animation and other independent sources, such as the Canadian animator Fr?d?ric Back. Back was known for his animated works involving pastels and won several awards for his animations.
For Adamczyk, fulfilling the vision that previous animators had of breathing life into animated works became his goal ? and eventually his medium of art.
?Early on, if you see a lot of the early cartoons and animations about 1940 or so, a big theme of that is just the magic of drawing these characters and making them come to life,? said Adamczyk. ?They were pretending but now I?m actually doing that more than anyone before me.?
Adamczyk?s current works are what he calls a ?Spontaneous Fantasia,? a universe springing from nothing via animation in real time.
?That?s what I do with my performances, taking you out of the studio and going live with it ? a spontaneous fantasia, taking what used to be only a pre-recorded medium and turning into something performable.?
Spontaneous Fantasia is different depending on where Adamczyk is located, but the essence is the same ? using computer animation to paint a constantly changing universe before an audience.
The visual elements of each performance are created live and vary in respect to the type of technology Adamczyk is using ? his performances have been seen on standard screens, in 3-D and on surround environments, such as the planetarium at GCC.
Each performance is done live with four interfaces ? a pad, a color mixer, a joystick and a gaming controller.
According to Adamczyk, performing live requires a different approach and mentality versus that of prerecorded works.
?You can?t back up and do it from another page, like you can in movies ? they?ll do 50 takes if they need to. If you see a live play, what you?re seeing is what?s going on,? said Adamczyk.
However, performing live has its benefits.
?In a live kind of thing, there?s a greater sense of continuity, and you have the challenges of trying to do more stuff without being able to break down instead of something else,? said Adamczyk. ?There?s a greater sense of excitement, a greater sense of magic, of something that doesn?t seem possible become possible. The suspension of disbelief is that much greater.?
Each piece that Adamczyk does has a particular theme to it, ranging from something aesthetic such as a new graphics style or something philosophical such as humankind?s place in the universe. His current works, titled ?The Omnicentric Universe,? cover the philosophical.
?The idea is to point out that each of us is at the center of the universe, that we?re each at the most important part of the universe,? said Adamczyk. ?[I illustrate] that concept by creating the universe and continuing to fly down and get smaller what you?d think of as a random spot of the universe. That?s the point where you see that you can go to one particular part of the universe and find something that?s amazing, astonishing or completely beautiful.?
Music is composed beforehand by Adamczyk before the performance, matching the sounds to what the audience will see.
?I create the pieces of music to go along with the graphics, although sometimes I start to get the graphics idea from the music,? said Adamczyk. ?Other times, I go back and forth to match what I want to do graphically. I try to match the style and get a good marriage of the musical and the visual.?
With every performance comes an opportunity to try new things, said Adamczyk.
?With repetition I get more practice so I get to be more bold with the system that I have,? said Adamczyk. ?I?ll go back and I?ll change things around and set things up a little bit differently from month to month, so it really evolves.?
According to planetarium manager Jennifer Krestow, Adamczyk has been performing at GCC for a while now.
?J-Walt approached us several years ago with the idea for using the planetarium as a full-dome screen for his animations,? said Krestow. ?He usually comes once a month, and he usually does two shows in an evening.?
Currently, Adamczyk is focusing on Spontaneous Fantasia as his main performance.
?People are really excited when they see it,? said Adamczyk. ?I want to push it and make it something really big. I think it can be, based on the responses that I?ve got.?
Adamczyk hopes that people enjoy his works.
?Mostly I hope that they come away with a sense of wonder and amazement, but more leaning towards a practical understanding of what?s possible,? said Adamczyk. ?[I want them to see] that we can create a world that we want and that it?s not about what?s possible, but more of what we can make possible.?
?The Omnicentric Universe,? Adamczyk?s most recent performance, will be at the Glendale Planetarium on Nov. 12 and Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for children and $10 for general admission, and can be purchased at brownpapertickets.com.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has awarded the Georgia Institute of Technology, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University and Saint Joseph's Translational Research Institute (SJTRI) a two-year, $1.8 million grant to foster the development of medical devices focused on the special needs of children. The award will launch the new Atlanta Pediatric Device Consortium, which will provide assistance with engineering design, prototype development, pre-clinical and clinical studies and commercialization for novel pediatric medical devices.
"By developing, testing and refining medical devices specifically for children, we hope to produce safer, more effective devices that will improve their lives," said Barbara Boyan, the Price Gilbert, Jr. Chair in Tissue Engineering in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
The consortium will be led by Boyan, along with consortium co-directors Kevin Maher, a cardiologist and researcher specializing in pediatrics with appointments at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Sibley Heart Center and Emory University, and Wilbur Lam, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist and bioengineer with appointments at Emory, the Aflac Cancer Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Georgia Tech.
Historically, devices designed for adults have been used in children. However, differences in body size and immune system responses between adults and children, and the lack of appropriate models to assess how a device might function in a growing child, can result in poor device performance and responses that are less than optimal.
"There is little information as to what devices are working well for children and what complications occur," explained Boyan, who is also a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar. "In addition, the high cost of clinical trials for a small market like pediatrics has made conducting pediatric trials cost-prohibitive for many manufacturers."
The consortium will try to reduce these barriers by creating a product development pathway that will provide support for commercialization of devices for pediatric health care from initial concept to the completed product.
To do this, the consortium will build on partnerships the institutions have with the Georgia Tech Translational Research Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Science (TRIBES), which focuses on the need for engineering systems that result in commercial products; the Global Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI), which includes a prototyping design and development facility; and the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) at Georgia Tech, a startup accelerator that helps Georgia technology entrepreneurs launch and build successful companies. Consortium institutions will also partner with SJTRI and the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSI) for pre-clinical, first-in-child testing and clinical assessments.
Additional consortium leadership will be provided by Franklin Bost, professor and director of design instruction in the Coulter Department; David Ku, a Regents professor with appointments in the Georgia Tech School of Mechanical Engineering and College of Management, and Emory's Department of Surgery; and Nicholas Chronos, president of SJTRI.
The consortium will provide assistance for pediatric medical devices from academic institutions and small businesses. The three technologies that will be investigated initially are:
A smartphone attachment designed for at-home ear examinations
A renal dialysis device
A gel designed to delay the re-fusion of a child's skull bones after surgery for craniosynostosis
The first innovation is the RemOtoscope -- a smartphone attachment designed by Lam for at-home ear examinations. Ear infections result in more than 15 million doctor office visits each year in the United States because diagnosing them requires direct observation of the child's eardrum and ear canal with a device called an otoscope. Lam envisions a physician remotely guiding placement of the device and diagnosing the condition via real-time video consultation with parents at home. The smartphone capabilities will also enable the transmission of other relevant clinical information to guide the physician in making the correct diagnosis.
The second device the consortium will bring into the pipeline is a renal dialysis device designed especially for children with kidney failure. There is currently no FDA-approved continuous bedside dialysis device for children. When critically ill children need kidney dialysis, doctors are forced to adapt adult-size dialysis equipment. These adapted adult devices can withdraw too much fluid from a pediatric patient, leading to dehydration, shock and loss of blood pressure. Matthew Paden, a pediatric critical care physician at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory realized this problem and has collaborated with Ajit Yoganathan, a Georgia Tech Regents professor and the Wallace H. Coulter Distinguished Faculty Chair in Biomedical Engineering, to develop the device.
The consortium will also investigate the development of a gel designed to delay the re-fusion of a child's skull bones after surgery for craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis affects approximately one in every 2,500 babies in the United States and is caused by the premature closure of gaps between skull bones. The gel is being developed by Boyan; Joseph Williams, clinical director of craniofacial plastic surgery at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Emory University; and Coulter Department M.D./Ph.D. student Chris Hermann, senior scientist Rene Olivares-Navarrete, visiting professor Zvi Schwartz and associate professor Niren Murthy.
Future projects will be selected through the consortium's seed grant competition, which will provide awards between $25,000 and $50,000 to inventors in the partnering institutions and the business community to develop a pediatric medical device through the consortium. Entries are due Nov. 1, 2011.
Additional devices will also be identified through technology development and commercialization programs, including the Coulter Department capstone design class, the TI:GER (Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results) program in the Georgia Tech College of Management, Georgia Tech's comprehensive center for technology commercialization called VentureLab and the Goizeuta Business School at Emory.

Ear infections result in more than 15 million doctor office visits each year in the United States because diagnosing them requires direct observation of the child's eardrum and ear canal with a device called an otoscope. Lam envisions a physician remotely guiding placement of the device and diagnosing the condition via real-time video consultation with parents at home. The smartphone capabilities will also enable the transmission of other relevant clinical information to guide the physician in making the correct diagnosis.
The second device the consortium will bring into the pipeline is a renal dialysis device designed especially for children with kidney failure. There is currently no FDA-approved continuous bedside dialysis device for children. When critically ill children need kidney dialysis, doctors are forced to adapt adult-size dialysis equipment. These adapted adult devices can withdraw too much fluid from a pediatric patient, leading to dehydration, shock and loss of blood pressure. Matthew Paden, a pediatric critical care physician at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory realized this problem and has collaborated with Ajit Yoganathan, a Georgia Tech Regents professor and the Wallace H. Coulter Distinguished Faculty Chair in Biomedical Engineering, to develop the device.
The consortium will also investigate the development of a gel designed to delay the re-fusion of a child's skull bones after surgery for craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis affects approximately one in every 2,500 babies in the United States and is caused by the premature closure of gaps between skull bones. The gel is being developed by Boyan; Joseph Williams, clinical director of craniofacial plastic surgery at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Emory University; and Coulter Department M.D./Ph.D. student Chris Hermann, senior scientist Rene Olivares-Navarrete, visiting professor Zvi Schwartz and associate professor Niren Murthy.
Future projects will be selected through the consortium's seed grant competition, which will provide awards between $25,000 and $50,000 to inventors in the partnering institutions and the business community to develop a pediatric medical device through the consortium. Entries are due Nov. 1, 2011.
Additional devices will also be identified through technology development and commercialization programs, including the Coulter Department capstone design class, the TI:GER (Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results) program in the Georgia Tech College of Management, Georgia Tech's comprehensive center for technology commercialization called VentureLab and the Goizeuta Business School at Emory.
