The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times more likely to get into accidents than any other age group. A high school program called Project Ignition is striving to change that by designing awareness and engagement campaigns.
"There is no group better equipped to influence teen driving behavior than teens themselves," said National Youth Leadership Council CEO Kelita Svoboda Bak.
The teens involved in Project Ignition are currently targeting parents and encouraging them to take an active role in improving their teens' habits behind the wheel. They suggest not only talking to teens about distracted driving, but asking them about their own driving experience to better understand what distracts them on the road.
Project Ignition also suggests talking to teens about passenger safety, such as offering to handle phones and gadgets for the driver. The best way to teach kids is often through example, so parents should make an effort to drive safely when their kids are in the car, which they should be doing anyway.
Sometimes, accidents are inevitable, no matter how safe you are behind the wheel. In this case, it can be wise to purchase a vehicle warranty, which can cover the cost of repairs.
