Wearable-technology pioneer Thad Starner on how Google Glass could augment our realities and memories

Wearable technology and AR pioneer Thad Starner on how Google Glass could augment our realities and our memories

Countless wearers of Google Glass stalked the halls of this year's Google I/O developer conference, but only a lucky few were sporting the prescription model, which makes room for lenses in a more conventional glasses frame. Among those lucky early adopters with imperfect vision was Thad Starner, a Georgia Tech professor who, in 2010, was recruited to join a top-secret project at Google's fabled X Lab. That project, as it turned out, was Glass, and Starner's role on the team as a technical lead would be a vital one.

Starner invented the term "augmented reality" in 1990 and, after experimenting with wearable technologies for 20 years now, offered us a rare perspective on where the stuff has been and where it's headed. So, then, we were very glad to get a few moments to chat with the man at I/O and get his insight into how we got to be where we are and, indeed, get some suggestions from him on where we're going from here.

Boost Mobile Wallet app and prepaid Visa hands-on

Boost Mobile Wallet app and prepaid Visa handson

Boost Mobile launched a Mobile Wallet app and service today at CTIA 2013 with an interesting twist in that it is tied to a Visa Prepaid card. Boost Mobile customers simply hit up a store to get signed up, download an app onto their handset and once funds are added to their account can use them in a wide variety of ways. From sending money via the app to people in 135 other countries, the ability to pay more that 3,500 billers nationwide, top up your prepaid account and using the included Visa debit card any money in your account can be accessed via that card as well. The app also makes use of your handset's camera with its Quick Check feature -- which is coming soon -- allowing an account holder to snap a photo of a check and submit it using the app to have the check's value added to your mobile wallet once approved -- which is nifty, if you don't use a bank we suppose. There are no month-to-month fees for the service but each bill you pay will cost some $2 and climbs depending on how quickly you need the payment made against the account. The service launches in Los Angeles, San Diego and parts of New Jersey today with rollout to all markets expected by the end of the year.

Evolio announces the Quadra, its first quad-core Android 4.1 tablet for Romanian locals

Evolio announces the Quadra, its first quadcore Android 41 tablet for Romanian locals

The buy local movement has plenty of appeal, but the philosophy often extends more readily to tomatoes than tablets. Not so in Romania, where Evolio has served up its share of slates and laptops for the home crowd. Now, the company is back with its first quad-core tablet offering, the 10.1-inch Evolio Quadra. The slab of aluminum and glass weighs in at 1.18 pounds (535 grams), and is outfitted with a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex A9 CPU and the Vivante GC1000 GPU, which sits on the lower end of Vivante's offerings. Other specs are largely standard fare, such as a 1,280 x 800 IPS LCD, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The Quadra's 5,000mAh battery is on the weaker side, and its connectivity is limited to WiFi (outside of an external 3G adapter), but that's what you'll get for 999 Romanian leu (roughly $296). This slab of Eastern European engineering is available for pre-order now on Evolio's website, and it's said to hit store shelves in mid-June.

Helios Smart Handlebars Feature Turn-By-Turn Directions

The Bay Area Maker Faire is full of clever bike designs?bikes with monstrous back wheels, bikes crafted of solid wood, bikes made to look like a pencil on wheels. But here's one that could transform your own two-wheeler: the smart handlebars by Helios.

The design is simple and clean: a sleek set of handlebars that can attach to most bikes with two LEDs facing backward and one in the center facing forward. The forward-facing LED pumps out a brilliant 500 lumens to keep you visible on the road.

The backward-facing lights, meanwhile, are multitalented. For one, they act as turn signals?push the button for right or left and the appropriate light will signal to traffic trailing you. Because the Helios bars are equipped with a GPS module and Bluetooth connectivity, users can use Google maps to program their route and the two LEDs will provide a simple version of turn-by-turn directions, blinking to tell the rider a turn is upcoming. The LEDs are also speedometers, changing color depending upon the bike's velocity. And, of course, the embedded GPS will allow you to track your bike (unless a thief knows enough to swap out the handlebars).

We got to see a demo of all these capabilities at Maker Faire this weekend. By the end of the year you could be able to see them for yourself: The guys at Helios launched their Kickstarter today, and, as of this writing, have gotten to nearly $17,000 of their $70,000 goal. Early bird donors can grab a set of Helios bars for $150. The group plans to deliver the bars in December.

Car bombs in Baghdad, south Iraq kill dozens

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A wave of car bombings across Baghdad's Shiite neighborhoods and in the southern city of Basra killed at least 34 people on Monday, Iraqi officials said.

The attacks are the latest in a recent spike of bombings that has hit both Sunni and Shiite civilian targets over the past week. The bloodshed has raised fears of a return to the widespread sectarian violence of 2006-2007 that brought the country to the edge of civil war.

In the Iraqi capital, nine car bombs went off, striking at bus stops, market places and in the streets of Shiite areas during the busy morning hours, killing 24 people and wounding 112, according to police officials.

In the southern city of Basra, two car bombs ? one near a restaurant and the other at a bus stop ? killed at least 10 people and wounded 27, according to police officials in the oil-rich city.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts but such large-scale bombings bear the hallmarks of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Hospital officials in Baghdad and Basra confirmed the casualty tolls. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Tensions have been intensifying In Iraq since the country's minority since Sunnis began protesting what they say is mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government, including random detentions and neglect.

The protests, which began in December, have largely been peaceful, but the number of attacks rose sharply after a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in the country's north on April 23.

Majority Shiites control the levers of power in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq. Wishing to rebuild the nation rather than revert to open warfare, they have largely restrained their militias over the past five years or so as Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida have targeted them with occasional large-scale attacks.

Derek Hough wants to expand career beyond 'Stars'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Derek Hough has made it to the finals of the 16th edition of "Dancing With the Stars," which wraps Tuesday, but he almost didn't return to the ABC show this season.

"I was gonna sit this season out," Hough said in a recent interview. "My mom hurt herself and she was in the hospital (but) I had this overwhelming feeling, 'You know what? I feel like this isn't the season I should be taking off. This isn't the one.' Now looking back, I'm really glad I made that decision because it's been one of my favorite seasons as far as creating and working with people."

Besides teaching his celeb partner, country singer Kellie Pickler, how to ballroom dance, he's also performed with a blind dancer and danced in a rotating room.

Hough, 28, pushed for these opportunities to keep challenging himself.

"For me, I like to push myself ... I hate feeling complacent or that I'm not learning," he said.

His sister, Julianne Hough, also a professional dancer, left "Dancing With the Stars" in 2009 to focus on her music and acting career. She said Derek is "the most talented person" she knows.

"He has an insane ability to create. I don't know what special gifts God gave him, but he can pick up any instrument and self-teach himself. He plays guitar, drums, piano," she said.

"He's one of the most amazing photographers I've ever seen. We'll take the same exact picture in the same exact spot and there's something amazing and beautiful about what he's taken. He's got an incredible voice. He is an amazing actor. I think the sky is the limit for my brother."

Hough said he wants to do everything.

"It's such a cliche thing to say," he laughed. "I want to choreograph, I want to direct, I want to act, I want to write music, I want to play music, I want to sing. For me, it's never-ending. I want to do it all, really."

Hough has won the mirror-ball trophy three times since he joined the show in 2007 (he sat out one season), but said he hasn't always been happy with his performances.

"There've been seasons where I've looked back and maybe been proud of one routine the entire season," he said. "That bothered me for a while, so that's why a couple seasons ago I started doing my own thing I suppose. I didn't want restrictions and I didn't want to restrict my ideas and choreography and concepts because I was afraid I was gonna get a seven or an eight or a six" score from the judges.

He decided what mattered most is the dance itself.

"I said, 'You know what? Whatever happens, when the show finishes, the season's over, the judges' comments and the scores disappear, all you're left with are the dances.'"

Hough's celeb partners, who have also included Ricki Lake, Nicole Scherzinger, Brooke Burke, Jennifer Grey and Maria Menounos, tend to look back and marvel at what they were able to do.

"When I signed up ... I was praying I would get Derek," said Lake, who danced with Hough in season 13. "I love all of them (the pro dancers) but he's hands-down one of the most talented people I've worked with in my life. I watch the show now and I cannot believe what he's able to do all day, every day. He's a genius."

Hough said he loves being on the show, but he's not sure he'll return next season.

One problem is the time commitment. Hough said dancers don't get a single day off because of rehearsals. "It's been a huge factor in me not being able to do other certain projects."

Another problem: "I've been offered certain roles on certain shows that would've been fantastic but unfortunately they were (on) competing networks. It's been difficult to juggle both things but I feel like it's coming to a point now where there's a lot more support" from ABC.

One project in the works: Derek and Julianne will co-executive produce and choreograph a scripted series for Starz. Julianne describes it as the "Black Swan" side of ballroom dancing.

Hough recalled something his mother told him.

"We were at a gas station getting the oil changed and the guy did a terrible job and (my mom) looked at me and said, 'Derek, whatever you become, just be the absolute best at it.' That's kind of stuck with me for all my life. I always want to be the best at what I do. That doesn't mean compared to other people but just in what you do."

The season finale of "Dancing With the Stars" will air at 8 p.m. EDT Monday and 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday on ABC. Other celebs and their partners: Olympic gold-medal gymnast Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas, actress-singer Zendaya Coleman and Val Chmerkovsky, and pro football player Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff.

Seamless and GrubHub are merging to form a giant food delivery service

Seamless and GrubHub are merging to form a giant food delivery service

Seamless and GrubHub, two of the biggest food delivery services in the US, have just announced they'll be merging into a combined company, with the name of the new operation to be decided at a later date. (SeamHub? Grubless?) Unlike some other transactions we cover around here, this does seem to be a merger in the truest sense of the word, with GrubHub founder Matt Maloney stepping up to the role of chief executive officer and Seamless CEO Jonathan Zabusky staying on as president. Though we don't yet know what the new service will be called, the companies are already saying it will serve 500-plus US cities, with more than 20,000 restaurants taking orders. Also, as hinted in that press release below, the merger will give the new mega-company more financial flexibility when it comes to further growth opportunities. Next up: Delivery.com?

Only 30 minutes for the gym? No Problem

Lets face it. There are days when we are all full of excuses. I cant recollect the amount of times where I?ve procrastinated to a point where I?ve told myself, what?s the point now, even if I do go to the gym I wont have more than half an hour, so let me just sit this one out.?Well today I?m here to tell you that that old excuse no longer works.?Here is a great workout that will do more for you than even one hour of isolated workouts at the gym, where your trainer will ask you to spend valuable time working out biceps, ankles and calves.?This is a full body functional workout and if you are done in 20 minutes you even have time for 3 or 4 all out sprints on the treadmill.

    Weighted squats
? hold dumbbells in each hand and spread your legs at shoulder width.? Now move down in a sitting position. Breathe in on your way down and come up fast breathing out while you do. Make sure your knees never cross your toes. Do one set of 15 reps at a weight that is comfortable for you and then do a second rep of 10 to 12 reps with heavier weights.

    Bench Press
? Lie down flat on a flat surface (if on the floor make sure that there is a mat or a rug between your back and the floor).? Keep your knees slightly bent. Now raise the dumbbells up over your chest in an upward pushing motion. Breathe out when you raise the dumbbells up.? Don?t lock your elbows when you extend your arms completely. Go back to starting position and repeat for 15 reps for one set with a comfortable weight. Increase the weight slightly for the second set and decrease the reps incase you feel uncomfortable.

Bent over rows ? hold dumbbells in each hand and spread your legs at shoulder width. Keep your knees soft (slightly bent) and bend your back forwards at 70 degrees. Now lift up the dumbbells in a straight line keeping your arms close to your body (bending your elbows) while you pull them upwards. Breathe out while you pull up and repeat 15 times for the first set. Then increase weight and repeat for 10 to 12 reps.

Weighted dips ? Raise your self on two supports with elbows locked (two parallel bars or even two chairs if at home). Lower your body until your shoulders are lower than your elbows. Push yourself up by straightening your arms. Switch to weighted dips once you can do 12 ? 15 reps without weights.

The clincher is that this workout takes up less of your time and gives you a whole body workout in half an hour, or less. Look out for another great 30-minute workout in my next post so that you can mix and match to give you greater flexibility.

Dell Project Ophelia USB Android stick to ship in July, priced at $100

Dell Ophelia USB Android stick to ship in July, priced at $100

We know that "wherefore art thou?" was about Romeo, but if your question was for (Dell's) Ophelia, then it's likely more "when art thou." The answer? July. The Android pendrive / USB computer we saw back at CES may be one of many, but distinctive thanks to its mainstream PC-maker origins. We're still lacking a lot of the specifics, other than that there's WiFi, Bluetooth, Wyse PocketCloud integration, plus, of course, HDMI and Android 4.something. There will likely be a few enterprise-friendly features too (administration tools, remote wiping) reports PC World. As usual, developers will get their hands on them first, with -- interestingly -- some cable and telecoms companies potentially stocking it too -- though no specifics at this time. So, the $100 Dell might not be the portable you'd love for this price, but maybe the USB PC finally crossing over?
