Distressed property sales inNorthern Colorado and throughout the Denver area greatly increased in the first half of this year, compared with the first six months of 2010, according to an analysis by the Genesis Group.
The Genesis Group, which tracks housing along the Front Range, recently completed an analysis of distressed home sales reported by Realtor members of Metrolist, who serve the 7-county Denver area, and IRES, which serves Boulder and northern Colorado communities.
Trends uncovered by the Genesis Group include:
A combined total of 6,387 real estate owned (REO) homes and ?short sales? were sold by participating brokers during the first half of 2011, a 29 percent increase from 5,305 total distressed transactions a year earlier.? The biggest percentage increase, 42 percent, was in Jefferson County, and Arapahoe County had the highest number of distressed sales at 1,797.? Only Boulder County experienced a decline.
More than a third of the 19,187 home sales during first half of 2011 were reported as distressed.? Only Boulder County had less than 10 percent distressed sales and more than half of all transactions reported in Adams County were either REO sales or short sales.
For the 7-county metro Denver area, the percentage of distressed transactions increased from less than one-fourth (24.5%) in the first half of 2010 rose to more than one-third (35.6%) in first half 2011.
Although the number of foreclosure filings declined by 31 percent in the metro Denver area from 12,115 to 8,376 in first half 2010 ? 2011 comparisons, the number of foreclosed homes sold by lenders (REO) through participating MLS brokers increased by 13 percent from 4,582 to 5,164 homes.
Short sales accounted for 26 percent of the distressed sales reported.? However, these homes sold for less than the seller?s loan amount increased sharply by 131 percent in first half comparisons, from 723 sales in 2010 to 1,673 homes sold in 2011.
It's a Small World is now a fun picture book for kids
This summer when I was looking for ideas for the World Traveler week of Summer Camp at Home, I came across this adorable picture book of It?s a Small World. I decided to pre-order the book because it looked so cute, and also because my boys love the Small World ride at Disney World. The book finally came in recently, and I had to post about it.
It?s a Small World features the words to the familiar song (including a second verse I didn?t know about!), while the vivid pictures depict children in imaginative scenes around the globe. Each book comes with a CD of the song for kids to listen to (if you can manage hearing it over and over). I know lots of grown people think the song and ride are annoying, but plenty of kids love It?s a Small World ? and that?s what counts. This would be a great gift book for anyone who enjoys this multicultural attraction.
I read/sang the book to my two-year-old a few times and then decided to record it. Here?s a look inside the book.

To tell the truth, I?ve always resisted the idea of a holiday in Barbados because I?m slightly nervous of the possibility of bumping into Michael Winner or Simon Cowell. I like the Caribbean: I?ve been to Antigua and my wife Sophie and I spent our honeymoon in Parrot Cay on Turks & Caicos. But recently I had started to believe that I?m more of an Indian Ocean man ? I love the Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius.it was Sophie who was keen to go to Barbados and, although I wasn?t sure about it, I was happy to give it a go ? after all, there must be more to the island than just the celebrity-packed beach at Sandy Lane.

We planned a two-week break, half spent with our extended family in a self-catering property and the other in a hotel. My first key observation on arrival was accompanied by a sigh of relief: no sign of Winner or Cowell! and I soon made a second and equally pleasing observation, which was that Barbados has many unexpected delights, including great restaurants providing excellent food. The week with our extended family was spent at a fabulous rented house called Crystal Springs to the north of Sandy Lane on the island?s lively west coast. it is close to Sir Cliff Richard?s villa, famously lent in the past to Tony Blair and his family as a holiday home.We had a motor boat as part of the deal and the driver was very keen to point out celebrity homes in the area: ?Over there is Sir Cliff?s house, this is where Cilla Black lives ?? it was interesting for us, but I?m not sure the owners would thank him for being so indiscreet.Crystal Springs, one of the largest rental villas in Barbados, is situated in two acres of gardens with its own private cove and is just a five-minute drive from the shops and restaurants at Holetown.

It is a fantastic property and proved a great choice for a holiday with our two young children, my parents and the whole extended family ? there were 14 of us altogether. We hadn?t intended being such a big group but we started inviting relatives along when we saw the size of some of the properties available.
To be honest, we enjoyed our time in thehouse much more than the week in a hotel. and with a large group, it worked out significantly cheaper.
We all got on very well. We decided we would alternate between dining at home and at restaurants, and there were so many wonderful places to eat along our stretch of beach that we were never short of choices.
They included Daphne?s ? which was one of the best ? and The Cliff (nothing to do with Sir Cliff), which was stunning but very expensive. Still, the lobster there was fabulous. another great restaurant was The Fish Pot, further along the coast in Little Good Harbour.
We also went to the stylish Lone Star many times. That became our lunchtime destination of choice, and thankfully I didn?t even realise how popular it was with Michael Winner until I saw all of his reviews displayed along the corridor on the way to the bathroom.
But I?m glad to say we didn?t see any celebrities there ? not Louis Walsh, Sir Philip Green or John Cleese.
Our indiscreet boatman told us that Take That had stayed in the house next to ours when the band were in Barbados to play at a big New Year party. But again we saw no celebrities there during our stay, which was perfect.We hired Mini Mokes for the entire fortnight and one day decided to go on an island tour. We drove to the south coast, which is markedly different from the rest of the island ? it?s more like Torremolinos. and I was surprised how different again we discovered the east coast to be. instead of the smart west coast?s lovely restaurants and posh hotels, the Atlantic coast has very little apart from a hotel and restaurant called the Atlantis, owned by the same people who own The Fish Pot.On another outing, we took the children to a nature reserve, where they thoroughly enjoyed seeing monkeys and snakes.perhaps because I?m used to paying London prices, Barbados didn?t come as too much of a shock financially. If you are eating at Lone Star, Daphne?s or The Cliff, you?re going to spend ?80 to ?100 per head with drinks. It?s not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but you do get really good food. and while we ate at many posh venues, we also tried to sample more of the rum shack-style places.

one day I played golf at the Sandy Lane course, which is the most expensive I?ve played on by far. Green fees are ?145 and golf balls cost ?6 each. I?m not a good player, so I lost quite a few during the round. I also visited the Royal Westmoreland Golf Course, which is so beautiful that I hear Wayne Rooney has bought a house there.as a cricket fan, I have to say I was sad to see so little of the sport being played on the island. given that Barbados has such a rich cricketing pedigree, I expected to see youngsters batting balls around on every beach.
In contrast to our time at Crystal Springs, our week at The Tamarind was a bit of a disappointment. We had been limited in our choice of places to stay because in February, few Barbados hotels take children. Sandy Lane does, but we couldn?t go there because of the Michael Winner factor.During our stay at The Tamarind we heard lots of people complaining at the front desk and, having scanned the latest Trip-Advisor reviews of the hotel, they largely chime with our own observations.On the website, there are plenty of glowing tributes because The Tamarind has much potential to delight: an excellent location and lots of attractive facilities. But there are a number of reviews that reveal a thread of discontent with the level of service that points towards problems with what they call ?product delivery?.

Service in Caribbean hotels ? even in very good Caribbean hotels ? can disappoint, to put it mildly, and The Tamarind?s plus points were often undermined by an annoyingly insouciant attitude to guests.one person posting on Trip-Advisor points out the watersports staff are ?really miserable? The staff need to learn better customer-service standards for the prices being charged?.another guest reports on the ?surly? attitude of the bar staff, adding that restaurant service is ?unforgivably slow?.Despite all this, I remain upbeat about the charms of the Caribbean. overall, it was a great holiday because Barbados had pretty much everything: beautiful beaches and the temperature was wonderful ? there was a little rain every day but nothing significant. We had spent a previous family holiday in the Seychelles and found that it was too hot for the children. and, of course, now there?s the terrible issue with sharks as well.So does all that mean I have shifted my allegiance from the Indian Ocean? a choice between the Maldives and Barbados is tricky. While the Maldives is perfect for a romantic break for couples, I would opt for Barbados when travelling with kids or a group of friends. It?s more social, with more fun bars and things to do.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) ? A green thumb and a little flair as a gourmet chef may be among the key skills for the first men and women who travel to the Red Planet later this century, according to a scientist who reported on preparations for the first manned missions to Mars.
Speaking in Denver at the 242nd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Maya R. Cooper said that provisioning the astronauts with food stands as one of the greatest challenges in scripting the first manned mission to Mars.
Cooper explained that the challenges of provisioning space vehicles and Martian surface bases begin with tangible factors, such weight and nutrition, and encompass psychological nuances, such as providing a varied, tasty menu that wards off boredom. The solutions envisioned now include requiring astronauts to grow some of their own food and engage in much more food preparation than their counterparts on the International Space Station.
The major challenge is to balance weight, food acceptability and resource utilization, Cooper explained. She is a senior research scientist at the NASA Johnson Space Center in the Space Food Systems Laboratory in Houston, Texas. For flights on the space shuttles and the International Space Station, astronauts get 3.8 pounds of food per day. For a 5-year round-trip mission to Mars, that would mean almost 7,000 pounds of food per person.
"That's a clear impediment to a lot of mission scenarios," Cooper said. "We need new approaches. Right now, we are looking at the possibility of implementing a bioregenerative system that would involve growing crops in space and possibly shipping some bulk commodities to a Mars habitat as well. This scenario involves much more food processing and meal preparation than the current food system developed for the space shuttles and the International Space Station."
Bioregenerative systems involve growing plants that multi-task. They would supply food, of course. But just as plants do in natural environments on Earth, those growing in bioregenerative systems also would release oxygen for the astronauts to breathe, purify the air by removing the carbon dioxide that crews exhale and even purify water.
Ideally, these plants would have few inedible parts, would grow well with minimal tending and would not take up much room. Ten crops that fit those requirements have emerged as prime candidates for the Mars mission's kitchen garden. They are lettuce, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, green onions, radishes, bell peppers, strawberries, fresh herbs and cabbages.
Cooper cited another option for these missions, the first of which could launch in the 2030s, according to some forecasts. Shipping bulk commodities to Mars could involve unmanned spacecraft launched a year or two before the astronauts depart to establish stashes of food with long shelf-lives that the crew could use while exploring the Red Planet.
Engaging astronauts in food production and preparation is the latest concept in a 50-year evolution of technology for filling astronauts' and cosmonauts' larders, Cooper noted. It began when Yuri Gagarin reportedly munched on pat? and caviar during that first manned spaceflight in 1961.
Space food has come a long way since the days of freeze-dried food blocks and squeezing gooey foods out of toothpaste tubes that astronauts ate in the earliest days of space flight. By the late 1960s, astronauts for the first time could have hot food and eat their food with a spoon in a special bowl. Other utensils were introduced in the 1970s with Skylab -- the U.S.' first space station. These astronauts could choose from 72 different foods, some of which were stored in an on-board refrigerator or freezer -- a first for space cuisine. In recent years, space shuttle astronauts could drink a coffee with their scrambled eggs for breakfast, snack on chocolates or a brownie and choose from chicken al a King, mushroom soup or rice pilaf among other foods for lunch and dinner -- just like on Earth. These prepackaged foods take only a few minutes and little effort to prepare.
"The NASA Advanced Food Technology project is currently working to address the issues of food variety, weight, volume, nutrition and trash disposal through research and external academic and commercial collaborations," Cooper noted.

BALTIMORE ? Derek Jeter reached another milestone with the New York Yankees, only this one wasn't nearly as memorable as the last.
Rookie Zach Britton outpitched Bartolo Colon, and the Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles 2-0 Sunday in the first game of a split doubleheader.
It was Deter Jeter's 2,402nd game with New York, breaking a tie with Mickey Mantle for most in a Yankees uniform. Jeter went 0 for 4 as the designated hitter, and during his second at-bat he fouled a ball off his right knee.
He was subsequently robbed of a base hit when right fielder Nick Markakis fielded his short-hop liner and got a forceout at second on Francisco Cervelli, who had to wait to see if the ball dropped in.
Asked how his knee felt, Jeter said, "I mean, it hurts." But he quickly added, "It's really nothing" and was placed in the leadoff spot for Game 2.
On July 9, Jeter became the first Yankee to get 3,000 hits with a first-inning homer. He then singled in the winning run in the eighth inning to cap a five-hit game in a 5-4 victory over Tampa Bay.
In this one, Jeter and the Yankees went quietly against Britton (8-9), who permitted only four hits in seven innings. It was a stark contrast from his previous outing against New York, when the left-hander gave up nine runs and got only one out.
"He threw his sinker, two-seamer, mixed in the breaking ball," Jeter said. "He threw the ball well. I mean the last time we faced him, that's a fluke."
It was the sixth straight win for the Orioles, their longest such run since an identical streak in April 2008. Britton is 2-0 during Baltimore's six-game roll.
"When you pitch like that, you feel like you're playing in a baseball game instead of trying to survive," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
The game was scoreless until the seventh, when Markakis doubled and Vladimir Guerrero singled. Baltimore added a run in the eighth when Mark Reynolds led off with his third hit and scored on a two-out single by J.J. Hardy.
Jim Johnson pitched a perfect eighth inning and Kevin Gregg worked the ninth for his 19th save, getting Alex Rodriguez to hit into a double play after giving up a one-out single to Mark Teixeira, who had three hits.
Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano went 0 for 3, ending his 17-game hitting streak. He had also hit in 18 consecutive games at Camden Yards.
New York has lost four of five. The Yankees failed to get a runner past first base in their first shutout loss since June 13.
"I thought (Britton) threw the ball ? totally different from what we saw at our place last time," manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought his sinker was really good and I thought he mixed his pitches."
Colon (8-9) gave up two runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings. He had a two-hitter through six innings before faltering. He has lost his last three starts and is 2-6 in his last eight decisions.
But he considered this effort to be a breakthrough.
"I feel very happy. Thank God that everything is back together," he said through a translator. "We'll see how far we're going to go."
Colon surrendered five runs in each of his previous two outings and was winless in his last four starts. But that shortcoming was offset by his exceptional performance in day games: The right-hander was 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA in seven afternoon starts.
This loss could be attributed to a lack of run support.
"It was unfortunate we were unable to get him a win," Girardi said. "Two runs in eight innings. I thought he threw the ball really well."

Reacting to New York manager Joe Girardi's assertion that the teams should have played a doubleheader on Friday ? two days after former Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan took his own life ? BALTIMORE - Even without Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez in the lineup, the New York Yankees still pack a wallop.
Curtis Granderson hit two of New York's five home runs, rookie Ivan Nova won his 10th straight decision, and the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-3 Sunday night for a split of a day-night doubleheader.
Granderson hit a three-run drive in the third inning and a solo shot in the seventh to take over the major league lead in homers (38) and RBIs (107).
"It's incredible what he's done this year," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "There's a lot of talk about MVP, and that will all be settled later. He's been unbelievable for us."
In the first game, rookie Zach Britton allowed four hits over seven innings to lead the Orioles to a 2-0 victory. It was Jeter's 2,402nd game with New York, breaking a tie with Mickey Mantle for most in a Yankees uniform.
But Jeter fouled a ball off his right knee in the third inning, and although he shook off the pain to finish the game, the Yankees captain was a late scratch in the nightcap with a bruised knee.
"We iced it between games and afterward, and it swelled up and became a challenge," Jeter said after the second game.
X-rays were negative, but Girardi expressed doubt about Jeter's availability Monday night for the finale of the four-game series.
Rodriguez also watched Game 2 from the dugout with a sore left thumb.
"We just felt it wasn't in our best interest in playing him, either," Girardi said.
The second game was tied at 3 before New York hit three straight homers in a four-run sixth. After Robinson Cano connected with a man on, Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones also went deep. It was the first time the Yankees hit three successive homers since May 20, 2009, against Baltimore.
Despite the power surge, Girardi hates the idea of being without Jeter and Rodriguez.

Different states will however, have different taxation rates and rules. This makes some states friendlier for retirees than others. Below are 5 of the most expensive states for a retiree to live in:
1. Vermont
Vermont is one of the states that are most unfriendly for retired senior citizens. For a start, the state does not have any exemptions for retirement incomes. The only payout that receives some tax exemption is Railroad Retirement income. If the senior citizen receives any retirement distributions from outside the state, the funds are fully taxed. The income taxes for this state range between 3.55% and 8.95%. The state also charges a sales tax of 6% and depending on the city or locality in which you reside, you may have to pay some further sales taxes on your purchases. However, medical drugs and devices are exempted from the 6% sales tax. Other punitive taxes in this state include 9% for hotel lodging and prepared foods, and 10% for alcohol served in hotels. Vermont also has high real estate taxes and is ranked among the top 10 highest taxed states for real estate. Vermont also charges Estate taxes but does not charge inheritance taxes.
2. Minnesota
Minnesota is another high tax state for retired citizens. The state has sales taxes going as high as 9.5% in some locations. Medicine and medical devices, food, and clothes are however, not subject to sales taxes. The income taxes for Minnesota range from between 5.35% to 7.85%. The state also taxes Social Security at the same rate as applied by the IRS. The state also levies taxes on pension distributions, whether originating from within or without the state. The state does give retired citizens an opportunity to defer part of their property taxes to a later date.
3. California
California was traditionally a tax haven for retired citizens, but has in the recent past, lost this attribute owing to various state taxation policies. For a start, the state has very high income tax rates. The state income taxation goes as high as 9.25% for citizens that earn only $46,767.00 and above. The state taxes retirement fund distributions (with the exception of Social Security). Sales taxes are 7.25% starting July 2011 with higher sale tax rates of up to 9.25% applicable in some of the cities in California.
4. Oregon
The income taxes for Oregon range from 5%-11%. The state?s income taxes are some of the highest in the nation, especially for income earners earning more than $250,000.00 a year. The state of Oregon also levies taxes on inheritances for both physical assets and other assets such as bank accounts and funds. However, Oregon does not charge any sales taxes and also charges no Estate Tax. They also do not charge taxes on Social Security for retirees.
5. Nebraska
In Nebraska, the income taxation ranges between 2.56% to 6.84%, depending on one?s income and the city in which one resides. The state levies taxes on Social Security and even on military pensions. The state sales taxes are at 5.5%, but some cities and localities may add a further 1.5% to bring the rate to 7%. Food and medical expenses are however, exempt from sales taxes. The state also charges an inheritance tax. The advantage of Nebraska for retirees is that they offer a homestead exemption from property taxes for senior citizens aged 65 years and above.
