Mercedes-Benz India launches E 63 AMG for Rs. 1.29 crores

?
Mercedes-Benz India has finally launched the much anticipated E63 AMG in India at Rs 1.29 crores (ex-showroom, Delhi). The event was held at the famous Buddh International Circuit (BIC), Noida. In June, the company launched the all new E-Class for Rs 41.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), now the AMG will join the line-up as top-of-the line variant. Mercedes Benz E 63 AMG was launched by Mr. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India. Mercedes E 63 AMG The all new E63 AMG derives its power from the 5.5-litre V8 engine, which is capable to churn whooping power output figures of 557bhp and 720Nm. The earlier generation E63 AMG's 6.2-litre engine was 30-37bhp lesser powerful than the new one. The engine is mated to the AMG Speedshift MCT 7G-Tronic transmission, which transmits power to all four-wheels. What makes the E63 AMG powertrain more special is the fact that it is a fully hand-built engine, which has also hiked the pricing of the car. The top-speed attained by the vehicle is 250kmph, and despite being so powerful it returns an impressive fuel economy of 9.5/100 km. With such high power output figures, it touches the 0-100kmph mark in mere 4.2 seconds. Mercedes E 63 AMG The new E63 AMG features a special AMG "A-wing", which makes the lower intakes and twin-blade grille positioned above it. Other features on offer are a black finished rear diffuser and an AMG exclusive dual exhaust setup at the rear. It gets some updates inside the cabin as well including AMG touches like silver seatbelts and Alcantara inserts to the Nappa leather steering wheel. The pricing for the car will be unveiled at the launch event only, which we would be covering live, so stay tuned to CarDekho for more updates on the same. Cheers! Mercedes E 63 AMG Mr. Eberhard Kern, Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India commented on the launch of the new E 63 AMG, "The E 63 AMG combines the attributes of a sports car with the practicality of a luxury sedan. The stunning new design idiom is in line with the new AMG design philosophy. The connoisseurs of Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles will now experience the performance and driving dynamics of the E 63 AMG more with the broader scope of standard equipment and appointments. The new E 63 AMG continues to be the pinnacle of technical prowess with added power and enhanced performance making it a practical super car. With the launch of the new E 63 AMG Mercedes-Benz India reiterates the philosophy of Best or Nothing for its customers." Mr. Eberhard Kern further elaborated, "The year 2013 has been marked as the year of offensive for Mercedes-benz India. We already have received phenomenal response for the products which were launched this year. After pioneering a new segment with the A-Class and launching the most sought after luxury executive sedan E-Class, the launch of the new E63 AMG further reiterates our promise of brining fascinating cars and providing a memorable brand experience for the valued customers of the Three Pointed Star in India." ? Help restoring my Windows 7 after boot failure and mysterious appearance of grub rescue> prompt?

Before we get started, I want to clarify I love Ubuntu, and Linux and all that Jazz. I know how passionate those with the expertise to help are about this. :D

The issue involved my BF3 machine (this is how I will refer to the box as I don't want to mention the unmentionable) which just up and stopped booting. In addition, I'm being dumped to a grub rescue> command prompt in terminal. Curiously, this is a relatively fresh install of, ahem, BF3 and all other required unmentionables; and I've made no attempts to dual boot or run Ubuntu in VM.

The issue I believe is that due to drastically reduced space on my development boxes SSD, I had to play musical chairs with the two 120GB and one 60GB drives to give my Ubuntu box much needed head room. I fear I failed in my due diligence and let Windows installation handle the task of removing and creating the required partitions and MBR when building out the new instance of my BF3 box.

Weirdly, the BF3 machine worked great for about 6 months and then whamo. I've attempted to use the system repair tools provided on the installation cd, including fixmbr, fixboot and so forth. I also booted to LiveCD and ran the tools provided through Boot Repair and OS Uninstaller from Yann Ubuntu repos with no luck. Still get dumped in same grub rescue>

Any help would be appreciated... as much as I love my Ubuntu, a man has GOT to get his game on!

Matt Garza Gets In Trouble On Twitter

The former Cub made news Saturday with tweets.

I thought about this for quite some time before writing about it, but figured, "Hey, it's a story, and it involves someone who was a member of the Chicago Cubs until two weeks ago," so here goes.

Matt Garza pitched against the Athletics Saturday afternoon. In the seventh inning, with the A's up 3-2, Eric Sogard (pictured, above, with Garza after the play) executed a squeeze bunt to give the A's an insurance run. This is a perfectly acceptable baseball play under the circumstances, especially between two division rivals fighting for a division crown.

Not according to Garza it's not, though. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tells what happened next:

Not content to just swear at Eric Sogard and insult him for his squeeze bunt in the seventh inning today, Rangers starter Matt Garza then apparently took to Twitter to slam Sogard and his wife, Kaycee, tonight. Garza uses a locked account, @Gdeuceswild, that has been confirmed as his in the past.

Nothing describes the content better than the tweets themselves:

Screen_shot_2013-08-04_at_8

Kaycee Sogard, via her own Twitter account, apparently found it funny. After the game Saturday, Garza spent several hours on Twitter after this incident talking about "negativity" and letting his "competitive edge out".

I can understand an athlete being a fierce competitor. That's certainly what has made Matt Garza a success at the major-league level. This kind of thing crosses the line, I'd say.

Here's the take on this incident from our SB Nation Rangers site Lone Star Ball.

99% 20 Feet From Stardom

All Critics (71) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (69) | Rotten (1)

The movie takes its cues from Standing in the Shadows of Motown, another act of pop-culture revisionism that tried to give musical credit where it was due.

Just about everything in this movie is right. And anybody who gives a rip about unsung heroines of popular music and giving credit when credit's overdue had better come up with a good excuse not to see it.

You may never hear the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter the same way again after hearing Jagger's and Clayton's separate accounts of the recording of the song.

The enthusiasm and love of music on display is just unavoidable. "20 Feet" may not get the whole story, but it gets some good ones.

Music documentarian Morgan Neville uses a mix of live interviews and archival footage to let the singers, and their music, tell their stories of vocal triumph and thwarted ambition.

You know all those doo-doo-doos and whoa-whoas-whoas you hear in pop hits? Without them, supplied by the likes of Darlene Love and Merry Clayton, you likely wouldn't be singing along to the songs you hear on your car radio.

A heartfelt and rousing documentary tribute to the talent and artistry of female backup singers.

I guess it leaves us with the message not everyone is destined to be a star, for one reason or another.

Although a few white and male backup singers appear, the film becomes a de facto chronicle of the experiences of many African-American women in show business, who -- like their counterparts in less high-profile jobs -- often are undervalued and exploited.

In a way, critics are the backup singers of film.

20 Feet From Stardom will be highly entertaining to anyone who ever let a needle drop into a '70s-era groove.

Neville does a good job of highlighting songs that are especially characterized by backup singers, like Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side,' and introducing us to some of the 'unsung' talent that made those hits possible.

This fantastic glimpse into the lives of background singers, old and new, directed by Morgan Neville, is completely mesmerizing.

It is a total pleasure, a rare treat, to listen and watch old footage of these indispensable performers belt out their melodies and harmonies. They are truly pioneers that helped shape the world of music for generations to come.

This is a fascinating doc for pop, soul, R&B and rock fans, for it peels back the often unfair layers of the music business like the skins on an onion. Sometimes, it'll make you cry to witness how terribly these talents were treated.

It's important to finally put names and faces to the voices of these women because, without them, countless songs would sound horrible.

Neville's greatest strength is as a historian, able to sort through a wealth of details to find the pieces he needs to tell one clear, compelling story.

Salutes songs that wouldn't work without the back-ups and, in effect, turn us all into back-up singers.

Not the deepest documentary you're likely to come across this year -- in fact, it's not deep at all -- but it may well be the most enjoyable one.

The transcendent joy and agonizing heartbreak of making music - and trying to make it in music - have seldom been captured as vividly as in "20 Feet from Stardom."

If music has the power to connect, "Twenty Feet From Stardom" shows it's those backup voices making the connection.

Experts: Unlikely US helped NZ spy on reporter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A U.S. official said Monday that the National Security Agency did not monitor phone conversations between a New Zealand journalist and his Afghan sources, and other officials and experts said any surveillance was more likely to have been done under standard military intelligence monitoring of enemy communications in war zones.

The Obama administration brushed off new allegations of NSA surveillance overreach, this time focusing on freelance reporter Jon Stephenson, who was in Kabul, Afghanistan, working for American news service McClatchy and other media outlets when his phone records were reportedly seized.

It was the latest revelation, if greeted with less outrage, in the ongoing debate over government snooping since NSA leaker Edward Snowden in June revealed two top secret U.S. programs that monitor millions of Americans' telephone and Internet communications each day.

In a short statement to The Associated Press, the U.S. government official said NSA did not target Stephenson or collect his phone records. That could signal that surveillance of Stephenson's calls was run by the Defense Intelligence Agency, which oversees war zone intelligence missions, according to a U.S. intelligence official. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the secret program.

On Sunday, the Star-Times newspaper of New Zealand reported that the New Zealand military conspired with U.S. spy agencies to monitor Stephenson's communications with sources in Afghanistan. New Zealand officials denied the new allegations.

But experts and former intelligence officials said if Stephenson's phone records were collected, they would have been gathered in a military intelligence sweep that is shared among allies ? and has for years monitored most communications in war zones, where there is little expectation of privacy in the hunt for enemy combatants and suspected terrorists.

New Zealand withdrew its small contingent of roughly 150 troops from Afghanistan earlier this year. But the country's Government Communications Security Bureau, which is New Zealand's NSA equivalent, would have been included in an allied intelligence gathering and reporting system in Afghanistan, said Canadian intelligence expert Wesley Wark.

Wark said the New Zealand security bureau also would have been able to access a secret system once code-named "Stoneghost," which allows it to share and draw from intelligence reports compiled from four other counties ? the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. Stoneghost was one portal through which the so-called Five Eyes allies, the U.S., U.K, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, shared data.

"It is entirely possible that New Zealand intelligence ran its own surveillance operation against Stephenson on the basis of access to a common allied intelligence pool in Afghanistan without necessarily requiring any direct U.S. input or involvement," said Wark, a national security professor at University of Ottawa.

He added: "It would not have been beyond the means of a small New Zealand contingent to do this on their own."

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said Monday it's possible that reporters could get caught in surveillance nets when the U.S. spies on enemy combatants. But generally, those nations do not spy on each other's citizens and residents.

The NSA would not spy on citizens of another ally in that group, especially if it were to circumvent that ally's own espionage laws, said former Michigan congressman and House intelligence committee chairman Pete Hoekstra.

What's picked up in war zones is considered fair game, however, and such surveillance has been a priority in Afghanistan as American troops prepare to withdraw in 2014. NATO and U.S. officials depend on the intelligence systems to detect and disrupt al-Qaida and the Taliban plots against the Afghan government and foreign forces.

American troops who specialize in intelligence gathering routinely tap directly into local cellphone company servers, or conduct technical surveillance though a number of electronic listening devices that are placed on jets, drones, ships and satellites, according to a current U.S. military official and a former one. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the classified surveillance program.

Each branch of the U.S. military has its own signals intelligence unit, including Task Force Odin, an Army aviation battalion created in Iraq to spot bomb makers, planters and plotters. The Odin unit's skills and some of its personnel were moved to Afghanistan ? but likely under a new name ? after it helped military counterterrorism units to track al-Qaida and other extremists.

In Iraq, where the war zone monitoring was first perfected, the cellphone metadata and an unknown number of phone calls were recorded and stored, said the former U.S. military official. When a terrorist suspect was captured or killed, their cellphones and other possessions were examined. Any phone numbers that could be retrieved were run through a U.S. telephone database, and relevant records and phone conversations retrieved.

U.S. troops and contractors also are told their own satellite and internet communications likely will be intercepted by their own nation's counterintelligence personnel, and checked for possible breaches of secrecy like the release of classified information, the officials said.

While the U.S. could legally monitor a foreign national civilian in a war zone, it would be unlikely. Wark said that it's possible that Washington nonetheless could have targeted Stephenson, given the breadth of U.S. information-gathering abilities. But he called that "rare," saying the U.S. generally would have needed to have a direct national interest in Stephenson to devote assets against him.

But if Stephenson was calling Afghans who are suspected of ties to militants, and who in turn were being monitored by U.S. or NATO spy services, that conversation could be recorded, transcribed and distributed. Usually, names of people who are not suspected of wrongdoing are deleted, according to one former administration official, and one former intelligence official.

The same practice applies to U.S. journalists, if they are talking to foreigners being monitored by the NSA in the U.S., the officials said.

Lonza scraps generic drug venture with Teva

By Alice Baghdjian and Ben Hirschler

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) - Specialty chemicals maker Lonza posted a bigger than expected fall in first-half profit and said it was ending a generic drugs venture with Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries by mutual agreement after misjudging how much it would cost.

The end to the alliance on the development, manufacturing and marketing of biosimilar drugs - copycat versions of injectable biotech medicines that have gone off patent - is not a complete surprise, since Lonza said in March it was reviewing the venture begun in 2009.

Biosimilars have long been eyed as a major opportunity for large makers of generic drugs, such as Teva and Novartis's Sandoz unit, but developing them is far more complicated than making generic copies of traditional pills.

The phase-down of Lonza's U.S. Hopkinton plant led to a 69 million Swiss franc ($73.78 million) impairment charge and a reduction in headcount, while the temporary shutdown of a Swiss plant also hit revenue, Lonza said in a statement on Thursday.

Its net profit fell by half to 41 million francs in the first half of 2013, while sales were down 11 percent at 1.744 billion francs, missing a consensus forecast for a 5.3 percent drop in a Reuters poll.

Faced with low-cost competition, a strong Swiss franc and higher raw material prices, Chief Executive Richard Ridinger is leading a review of Lonza's structure and strategy.

Ridinger said reorganization at three different production sites would lead to a reduction in headcount of about 250 full-time equivalents by the end of the year and the company's cost base should be reduced by 100 million francs by the end of 2016.

He announced Lonza planned to consider strategic options for its wood treatment business and said ending the joint venture with Teva would reduce its investments by 150 million francs.

"We think this restructuring is necessary in order to show growth in the future as the business as it is today would continue to decline," Vontobel analyst Carla Baenziger said, adding that ending the Teva venture should help reduce debt.

SHARES FALL

Shares in the company, which have gained more than 50 percent so far this year, fell 2.4 percent by 0835 GMT, underperforming an index of European chemicals industry stocks, which was down 0.6 percent.

Lonza, which makes ingredients for drugmakers such as GlaxoSmithKline, reiterated its target to increase core earnings before interest and tax by 10 percent this year, slowing from 28 percent growth in 2012.

Chief Operating Officer Stephan Kutzer said it was now clear that biosimilars would "require more capital than initially planned and will also take more time until they reach the market".

Regulators have also been slow to draw up rules for biosimilars, although progress in Europe is faster than in the United States.

Last month, the European Medicines Agency gave a green light to copycat versions of Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co's blockbuster rheumatoid arthritis drug Remicade - the first such approval for those antibody-based medicines.

How Should NFL Teams Measure Success in Training Camps?

Much like a bear stumbling out of its cave at the onset of spring after a long winter hibernation, so too does the NFL emerge from an extended slumber as the calendar turns to late July, with training camps starting to open and real football being right around the proverbial corner.

As training camps begin throughout the league, the question is begged: How should NFL franchises measure success in this critical period of team development? Well, there are a clear set of objectives that each team seeks to follow.

Obviously, everything starts with health. Just take a look at what happened with Dallas Cowboys defensive end Tyrone Crawford, lost for the season with a torn Achilles on the opening day of training camp. Injuries are an unfortunate part of football, and while an element of luck is certainly involved in maintaining the overall health of a squad, teams must take the necessary steps to ensure that their key players are able to perform on the field in September and beyond.

Another main objective? Develop a personality as a team. This point is especially critical for new head coaches seeking to leave their imprint on the 53-man roster. Every successful NFL team has an identity, and that identity is forged in the sweat and heat of training camp. Teams don't just become smart, disciplined and tough by accident; these attributes are honed under the sweltering July and August sun.

Let's move on to roster development. While the stars of each team are most likely established, it's the job of each coaching staff to develop the bottom third of the roster. This is where coaches really earn their paydays?by coaxing maximum effort and ability out of players who don't necessarily possess the physical attributes of obvious starters.

In the NFL, you don't win with a few stars and an otherwise-average 53-man roster. Each squad must be balanced, and that starts in training camp. The bottom third of the roster must compete hard on special teams, and be ready to play if needed. This is a primary objective of each team in camp.

Going along the same line as developing the bottom third of the roster is ensuring that the backup quarterback is absolutely, 100 percent prepared to play. Everyone knows that the quarterback is the single-most important player on the roster, and if he is injured, the backup must be ready to step in and perform at a high level.

Even for the most successful and tenured coaching staffs, there are schematic changes made in the offseason, and these new plans are implemented in training camp. Whether it's a new offensive formation or defensive blitz, these plays are born and nurtured in camp.

Each team also has a group of new players, whether via free agency or the draft, that must be assimilated into the roster. It's up to each coaching staff to make sure that these fresh faces learn the playbook and are ready to compete and contribute.

What's the most important goal for each team to accomplish at camp?

What's the most important goal for each team to accomplish at camp?

  • Stay healthy

  • Develop bottom third of roster

  • Make sure backup QB is ready

  • Establish an identity

  • Hand team over to veteran leaders

And, ultimately, it's up to each coaching staff to hand the team over to the veteran leaders in the locker room. At the end of the day, it's their team, and when they're empowered, the locker room leaders will make sure that the team remains policed and focused.

If all of these objectives are followed, there's no question that NFL teams can consider their training camp to be a successful one.

Facebook's 'simple' mobile phone app users cross 100 million

Founded in 2004, Facebook has 1.11 billion monthly active users as of March 2013. (AP)Social networking giant Facebook today said over 100 million people are accessing its website every month through its app for feature phones, aiding the firm in expanding in developing markets like India.

'Facebook For Every Phone' app enables people globally to connect with friends and others on the famous social networking site regardless of the mobile device they use.

"We are excited to announce that there are now more than 100 million people using Facebook For Every Phone each month," the California-based company's Growth Manager Ran Makavy said in a post.

Facebook for Every Phone is a fast and easy-to-use native app that works on more than 3,000 different types of feature phones from almost every handset manufacturer. These devices can cost as little as 20 US dollars, he added.

"Today, millions of people in developing markets like India, Indonesia and the Philippines are relying on this technology to connect with Facebook, without having to purchase a smartphone," Makavy said.

The app is powered by technology created by Snaptu, an Israel-based mobile platform that was co-founded in 2007 by Makavy.

"Our small team relaunched Snaptu as Facebook For Every Phone in July of that same year, and grew the user base to where it is today. Snaptu's platform uses the power of servers to accelerate and optimise the way mobile apps work, and is the key to providing a great user experience on low-end devices," he added.

Founded in 2004, Facebook has 1.11 billion monthly active users as of March 2013 of which about 79 per cent

Netgear 802.11ac A6200 WiFi Adapter

802.11ac is a new wireless standard worth getting excited about, even though it has yet to be ratified. Netgear has a solid 11ac router on the market, the R6300 WiFi Router 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit, and an 802.11ac wireless adapter to go with it: the 802.11ac A6200 WiFi Adapter. Unfortunately, the A6200 is less impressive than the router and that's testing it with the R6300?which should turn in its best test results. In fact, in 11ac mode the A6200 is among the slower-performing 11ac wireless adapters we've tested, and its performance in other modes is underwhelming, too. Add in some quirky software and this is an adapter that needed more time in the oven.

Specs and Design
The A6200 supports up to 300 Mbps at 2.4 GHz and 867 Mbps at 5 GHz.? It can work on USB 1.1 or 2.0 ports, and it only works with Windows 8, 7, XP, and Vista?either 32 or 64 bit.

The adapter measures 3.75 by 1.23 by 0.56 inches (HWD). It can plug right into a computer's USB port or you can connect its accompanying USB base (which the adapter then connects to) into a USB port.? The adapter also has an antenna that you can push up or to the side, kind of like a stiff little arm that sticks out from the antenna?the antenna and the base are to give users adapter placement flexibility.

I have to state outright that I don't like the design. First of all, no matter which way I had the antenna arm oriented, or whether I had the adapter plugged in directly to the USB port or the base, made no difference in performance in my testing. Also the adapter and the way you move the antenna reminds me of those snake toys back in the 80's, remember? You could twist and bend the puzzle into shapes like a dog or diamond.? I think the design is too overcomplicated and the antenna arm seems like you could easily break it if you accidentally twisted it the wrong way.?

The adapter is dual-band but, honestly, the performance at either band and in any wireless mode is a big yawn.?

Setup
The A6200 ships with a resource CD. Pop in the CD and it auto-runs, opening up a menu of options. These include: Setup, Install Windows Standalone Driver, Documentation, Customer Support, and Online Registration.

I opted for Setup. I have to say, the Genie software that installed with the adapter's Windows drivers is a poorly designed eyesore and, worse, it's buggy. The interface froze on me once, and every time I opened it and clicked to scan for all wireless networks in range, the networks would show up and then a few seconds later, they would all disappear. This happened to me several times.

I don't even care for the way the installed software opens. After it installs, a Network Genie shortcut is placed on the desktop. I double-click it open and all I see is the icon appear minimized in the Windows System Tray at the bottom-right of my laptop's screen. So then I have to click on the icon minimized to open the program.?Opening the software takes two steps therefore, instead of one.

If you do decide to go with the A6200, therefore, I recommend not using the CD's Setup option. Just install the Windows standalone drivers.

Performance
Yes, you will be able to surf the Web fine with the A6200. Yet, for any internal network multimedia streaming or large file handling, there may be some latency. The adapter produced unimpressive performance even with Netgeat's R6300 router.? At 15 feet from the R6300 in 802.11ac mode, throughput reached 74 Mbps. I've seen triple digit throughput in that mode from other pre-draft 802.11ac routers such as the Linksys Wireless Mini USB Adapter AC 580 Dual Band (AE6000) and the Asus USB-AC53 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 Adapter.

The A6200's performance is more on par with another 802.11ac adapter that I found less-than-impressive, the Trendnet AC1200 Dual Band Wireless USB Adapter?. The A6200 had a slighter edge at the 2.4GHz mode over the Trendnet: At 15 feet the A6200 clocked 64 Mbps versus 33 for the Trendnet. We rated the Trendnet adapter two out of five stars. Click on the image for the full comparison chart.Benchmark

Because of a performance edge over the Trendnet in the 2.4 GHz band, the A6200 earns 2.5 stars. I expect Netgear will offer another 802.11ac adapter that's quite a bit more robust when the 802.11ac standard is ratified. For now, it's just an adapter that I can't quite recommend, not only for performance but bcause of the buggy software and clunky design. The Editors' choice for 802.11ac wireless adapters remains Edimax's AC1200 Wireless Dual-Band USB Adapter.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Detroit: 'Enough was enough'?

detroit

Seven governors came and went during the decades-long decay of Michigan's largest city that culminated with a humiliating collapse into financial ruin.

It's the eighth, former business executive and relative political novice Rick Snyder, who is aggressively tying his legacy to the prospects of a Detroit turnaround.

When he took office, Snyder pushed for more powers for the state to intervene in distressed cities and schools. After voters repealed the law last November, he ignored critics and signed another one. He also hired the city's turnaround specialist and, nearly four months later, blessed the request to file for bankruptcy.

For the man with the "one tough nerd" moniker, it's the latest bold decision in a 2 ?-year stretch that's remarkable for the sheer breadth and pace at which Snyder has moved. He's again in the national spotlight just a half-year after making Michigan ? the bastion of the auto industry and organized labor ? a right-to-work state, a move that pollsters say led to a drop in his approval ratings.

Though the impact of the bankruptcy filing on Snyder's 2014 re-election may be difficult to predict, it's still a legacy definer that's being watched not only in Michigan but also by Wall Street and other elected officials across the country.

Snyder, a former venture capitalist and computer company CEO, has no known presidential aspirations.

"I don't spend time dwelling on my legacy. I just try to do my job well," the Republican governor told The Associated Press in an interview. "That's relentless positive action. No blame, no credit. Just simply solve the problem.

"Here was a problem 60 years in the making. The can was being kicked down the road for far too long. It was time to say enough was enough. Let's stop, let's stabilize, let's grow."

Detroit's bankruptcy could last at least through summer or fall 2014, when Snyder is expected to ask voters for another term.

"I deeply respect the citizens of Detroit," he said. "They along with the other 9 million people in our state hired me to do this job. They're my customers. This was a tough step, a difficult decision, but it's the right decision."

The first-term governor, perhaps more than any other state's chief executive, hasn't been afraid to confront mounting retiree pension and health care costs hampering state and city budgets. He's done that mainly by signing laws making public workers pay more of their health costs, ending retiree health care for new hires and enticing teachers to contribute more toward their future pensions.

But the stakes could be higher with the Detroit intervention under Michigan's emergency manager law.

Eric Scorsone, a Michigan State University economist and expert on government finances, said while Snyder helped revise the law to make it one of the toughest in the country, bankruptcy likely was inevitable even under the old law ? unless creditors had voluntarily agreed to accept far less than what they're owed.

"Other governors may have taken different approaches. But even under the old law, if we had a different governor, it's pretty obvious something would have had to be done," he said.

Scorsone said many other U.S. cities have issues similar to Detroit, though not on the same scale. Other states will be watching to see what happens in part because Snyder ? not local elected officials ? is taking responsibility for improving public safety and other basic needs, he said.

"I think it's aggressive in the sense that most states don't intervene in local affairs to the same extent," Scorsone said.

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, a Democrat who lost to Snyder in the 2010 election, said Snyder "definitely" deserves credit if Detroit emerges in better shape, especially in providing everyday services.

"It's bold and decisive. You've got to give him credit, however late," Bernero said, adding that Snyder should have intervened in Detroit within three months of taking office in 2011.

"There was a sense of inevitability about this bankruptcy," Bernero said. "I would have moved quicker with an emergency manager. The ship couldn't right itself. Why prolong the agony? Lance the boil and move on."

Snyder first struck a consent agreement in April 2012 with the Democratic-led city to wipe out its enormous budget deficit and mountainous debt but appointed Kevyn Orr as emergency manager after that didn't work.

Steven Rattner, who was chief adviser to President Barack Obama's auto bailout task force, said from his detached vantage point in New York, Snyder "has handled this thing quite well."

While acknowledging the political difficulties associated with anything viewed as a bailout, Rattner questioned why the state and possibly the federal government aren't offering Detroit a rescue package.

"It's not logical for there to be political fallout from putting Detroit in bankruptcy because there's no other alternative to that," Rattner said. "The question people can ask is whether Snyder is offering all the help the state of Michigan can offer. ... These are tough politics either way."

There seems little appetite from either Democrats or Republicans in Washington for a federal rescue of Detroit. Bailing out the city with state money could bring resistance in the Republican-led Legislature and prompt anger from out-state residents concerned about funding their own schools and local services.

"There are so many great things going on in Detroit. We resolve the city government issue, Detroit's really well poised to see outstanding growth take place when people can say there are better services," Snyder said. "We're going to get there."

Tips to Prevent Serious Lawn Mower Injuries in Kids - Health News ...

July 20, 2013

SATURDAY, July 20 (HealthDay News) ? About 68,000 people are treated in U.S. emergency departments each year for lawn mower-related injuries, and 9,400 of them are children under the age of 18, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Riding mowers cause most of the lawn mower-related injuries in children and most of them are injured in their own yard. Common injuries include amputations, fractures, cuts, infection and skin damage.

?One important statistic to remember is that a significant number of these accidents occur among family members,? Dr. Junichi Tamai, at the division of pediatric orthopedic surgery at Cincinnati Children?s Hospital Medical Center, said in a hospital news release. ?Most families think that if the child stays with a family member, everything will be okay, but that is not always the case.?

Tamai and the American Academy of Pediatrics offer the following tips for keeping safe around lawn mowers:

  • Children younger than 15 should not be in the yard when someone else is mowing. Kids younger than 12 should not use walk-behind mowers. Those younger than 16 should not be allowed to use ride-on mowers. Children or adults should never be allowed as passengers on ride-on mowers.
  • Use a lawn mower with safety features such as automatic blade disengagement when the mower is placed in reverse; a control that stops the mower from moving forward if the handle is released; and a blade safety device for ride-on mowers that disconnects the blade from the power source when the operator leaves the operating position.
  • When operating a lawn mower don?t pull the mower backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary, and carefully look for children behind you as you mow in reverse.
  • Always turn off the mower and wait for the blades to stop completely before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the discharge chute, or crossing areas like gravel paths or roads.
  • When mowing, wear safety gear such as hard-soled, sturdy shoes ? no sandals or sneakers ? and hearing and eye protection.
  • Prevent injuries from flying objects by picking up items such as rocks and toys from the lawn before starting to mow.

(AP) ? In a rare and public reflection on race, President Barack Obama called on the nation Friday to do some soul searching over the death of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his shooter, saying the slain black teenager "could have been me 35 years ago." Empathizing with the pain of many black Americans, Obama said the case conjured up a hard history of racial injustice "that doesn't go away."

Obama's personal comments, in a surprise appearance in the White House press room, marked his most extensive discussion of race as president. For Obama, who has written about his own struggles with racial identity but often has shied away from the subject in office, the speech signaled an unusual embrace of his standing as the nation's first black president and the longing of many African-Americans for him to give voice to their experiences.

"When you think about why, in the African- American community at least, there's a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it's important to recognize that the African- American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn't go away," Obama said during his 20-minute remarks.

A Florida jury last week acquitted George Zimmerman of all charges in the February 2012 shooting of Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old. The verdict was cheered by those who agreed that Zimmerman was acting in self-defense, while others protested the outcome, believing Zimmerman had targeted Martin because he was black.

Despite his emotional comments on the case, the president appeared to signal that the Justice Department was unlikely to file federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman. Traditionally, he said, "these are issues of state and local government," and he warned that the public should have "clear expectations."

Following the verdict, some civil rights leaders called on Obama to lead a national conversation on race. But the president has resisted. Before Friday, his only comment on the verdict had been a written statement in which he called Martin's death a tragedy and appealed for calm.

But throughout the week, the president kept track of the national response to the verdict, particularly by black Americans, and had discussions with his family, aides said. He was ready to address the verdict earlier this week during a round of interviews with Spanish language television stations, but the matter never came up.

On Thursday, he told his senior advisers that he felt the country needed to hear from him ? not in an interview or speech, just a frank discussion of his views and experiences. He spoke from the podium in the White House briefing room with no notes.

Even as the president urged the public to accept the verdict ? "once the jury's spoken, that's how our system works" ? he gave voice to the feelings held by many angered by the jury's decisions.

There's a sense, Obama said, "that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, that, from top to bottom, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different."

The president spoke emotionally about Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, saying they had displayed incredible grace and dignity. He never mentioned the feelings of Zimmerman, whose brother has said the former defendant has faced numerous death threats.

Martin's parents released a statement following the remarks, saying, "President Obama sees himself in Trayvon and identifies with him. This is a beautiful tribute to our boy."

Zimmerman's brother, Robert, also welcomed the president's remarks, telling Fox News that "the American people need to have some time to digest what really happened and to do that soul searching the president spoke of."

Despite that fact that Obama's race has been central to the narrative of his political rise, he has rarely addressed the matter as a public figure. He last spoke about race in a substantial way as a presidential candidate in 2008 in addressing criticism over incendiary comments made by his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

In 2009, Obama stumbled when commenting on the arrest of a black Harvard professor in the professor's home, saying the police "acted stupidly." The president was forced to retract his statement, then held an awkward "beer summit" at the White House with the professor, Henry Louis Gates, and the white arresting officer.

But on Friday, Obama spoke poignantly about the distrust that shadows many African-American men, saying that they can draw nervous stares on elevators and hear car locks clicking when they walk down the street.

"There are very few African-American men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store," he said. "That includes me."

In a departure from his typical caution on legal matters, the president also waded into the thorny debates on racial profiling and Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, despite the fact that neither was formally raised during Zimmerman's trial.

Obama said it would be useful "to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of confrontation" that led to Martin's death. He questioned whether a law that sends the message that someone who is armed "has the right to use those firearms even if there is a way for them to exit from a situation" really promotes peace and security.

And he raised the provocative question of whether Martin himself, if he had been armed and of age, "could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk" and shot Zimmerman if he felt threatened when being followed.

Seeking to inject a sense of hope into his otherwise somber remarks, the president said race relations in the United States have improved with each passing generation. He said his young daughters and their friends are "better than we were."

"We're becoming a more perfect union," he said. "Not a perfect union, but a more perfect union."

Eating eggs is not linked to high cholesterol in adolescents, study suggests

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Although in the late 20th century it was maintained that eating more than two eggs a week could increase cholesterol, in recent years experts have begun to refute this myth. Now, a new study has found that eating more eggs is not associated with higher serum cholesterol in adolescents, regardless of how much physical activity they do.
