Sandy spending hopes drive rally for recovery companies

(Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy has caused tens of billions of dollars in damage up and down the U.S. East Coast, but the recovery and reconstruction spending that will follow could pump an almost equal amount right back into the economy, driving a rally for some stocks as markets reopened on Wednesday.

Companies like environmental cleanup specialist Clean Harbors , building supply chains Home Depot and Lowe's , building products makers Owens Corning and Beacon Roofing and generator manufacturer Generac Holdings surged in early trading on the assumption that the recovery from Sandy will take years and boost sales.

Lumber futures also soared, hitting daily limits and shutting trading.

Economists and insurers call the phenomenon "demand surge," or the increased cost to repair or replace damaged property after a disaster, when people are competing for a limited supply of resources in a way that boosts prices.

University of Maryland professor Peter Morici estimated this week that reconstruction spending might equal 80 percent of the total economic losses caused by Sandy.

Others suggested the effects will trickle all the way down to mass-market retailers.

"I'm looking for a pronounced paycheck cycle from Wal-Mart in the next couple of the weeks," said NBG Productions chief equities analyst Brian Sozzi, speaking of the phenomenon in which shoppers at the discounter are living paycheck-to-paycheck and sales spike at the beginning of the month.

EARLY WINNERS

At last count nearly 6 million customers were still without power due to Sandy, which took dozens of lives and left many waterfront communities in ruins.

"(It's) very hard to predict how (the storm's effect) will play out, but it generally leads to a little increase in business ... this is going to be a very big project in terms of the size of the storm," Sandy Cutler, chief executive of manufacturer Eaton Corp , said on a conference call on Wednesday.

One early winner, if such a thing is possible at a time like this, is the freight industry. Airport and rail closures have forced companies like drug manufacturers to seek alternative methods of transport to get products to market.

"This is probably close to a $2 billion revenue opportunity for truckers," said Noel Perry, principal of Transport Fundamentals in Cornwall, Pennsylvania. "It's a pricing opportunity because there are shortages and because products need to be expedited."

Solar system installers with big businesses on the East Coast could also benefit from rebuilding efforts, according to Raymond James analyst Pavel Molchanov. He named Real Goods Solar Inc and privately held SolarCity and Astrum Solar, specifically, as potential winners.

American Superconductor Corp , whose products support the power grid infrastructure, and energy services company Ameresco Inc could also see an uptick in business, Molchanov added.

EARLY COSTS BITE

Though it is far too early to know precisely what damage Sandy has done, early estimates suggest insured losses of from $5 billion to $15 billion and total economic losses from $20 billion to as much as $45 billion.

U.S. airlines, which have canceled nearly 20,000 flights from Sunday through Wednesday, will lose millions in revenue because of the travel shutdown, analysts estimated.

Ray Neidl, an analyst with Maxim Group, said effects from Sandy will be worse than other storms that have slowed air travel, given the ground damage at key hubs like LaGuardia.

The airlines with the most exposure to the U.S. Northeast include New York-based JetBlue Airways , which has a big hub at JFK; Delta , which recently expanded flights at LaGuardia and has a JFK hub; and United Continental , which has a major hub at Newark.

Major rail companies are also still struggling to get operations up to speed.

CSX said it had completed inspections and was restoring some service in the region, but not between Philadelphia and Albany, N.Y. It said shipments will be delayed three days or more. Norfolk Southern is telling customers to expect delays through the end of the week.

Shares of insurers came under some pressure as trading reopened, with Travelers Cos Inc , Chubb Corp and Allstate Corp all down early on fears they could be among the most exposed to losses.

But analysts said there was so much extra capacity in the insurance industry that the losses were unlikely to do much more than slash fourth-quarter earnings. Morgan Stanley analyst Gregory Locraft cut earnings estimates for property insurers an average of 26 percent based on the expected cost of Sandy.

"(Property and casualty) carrier stocks initially fare worse as the impact of losses is digested but then outperform as higher P&C pricing power becomes a focus," Locraft said in a note to clients on Wednesday.

INDUSTRIALS, RETAILERS HURT

Industrial companies with New Jersey outposts continued to have power problems on Wednesday. Dow Chemical Co said a research and development site in Bound Brook, N.J., remains without electricity, and a Styrofoam plant in Pennsauken, N.J., is operating at reduced rates following Hurricane Sandy.

Some retailers were also struggling on Wednesday to get all of their stores reopened, in some cases because of physical damage and in others because they simply could not get staff in place.

Sears Holdings said it still had 66 stores closed as of Wednesday morning, with plans to hook some stores up to generators to get them open.

Similarly, Wal-Mart Stores Inc still had 44 closures in six states, though it was hoping to have most of them open by the end of the day.

"We've discovered electricity is one of the most needed commodities right now, and we want to open our doors so our members and guests can recharge necessary items and communicate with loved ones," said Greg Cathey, vice president of the northeast region for the company's Sam's Club unit.

Profiles in Science Peter G. Neumann: Rethinking the Computer at 80

Jim Wilson/The New York Times

Peter G. Neumann

MENLO PARK, Calif. ? Many people cite Albert Einstein?s aphorism ?Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.? Only a handful, however, have had the opportunity to discuss the concept with the physicist over breakfast.

One of those is Peter G. Neumann, now an 80-year-old computer scientist at SRI International, a pioneering engineering research laboratory here.

As an applied-mathematics student at Harvard, Dr. Neumann had a two-hour breakfast with Einstein on Nov. 8, 1952. What the young math student took away was a deeply held philosophy of design that has remained with him for six decades and has been his governing principle of computing and computer security.

For many of those years, Dr. Neumann (pronounced NOY-man) has remained a voice in the wilderness, tirelessly pointing out that the computer industry has a penchant for repeating the mistakes of the past. He has long been one of the nation?s leading specialists in computer security, and early on he predicted that the security flaws that have accompanied the pell-mell explosion of the computer and Internet industries would have disastrous consequences.

?His biggest contribution is to stress the ?systems? nature of the security and reliability problems,? said Steven M. Bellovin, chief technology officer of the Federal Trade Commission. ?That is, trouble occurs not because of one failure, but because of the way many different pieces interact.?

Dr. Bellovin said that it was Dr. Neumann who originally gave him the insight that ?complex systems break in complex ways? ? that the increasing complexity of modern hardware and software has made it virtually impossible to identify the flaws and vulnerabilities in computer systems and ensure that they are secure and trustworthy.

The consequence has come to pass in the form of an epidemic of computer malware and rising concerns about cyberwarfare as a threat to global security, voiced alarmingly this month by the defense secretary, Leon E. Panetta, who warned of a possible ?cyber-Pearl Harbor? attack on the United States.

It is remarkable, then, that years after most of his contemporaries have retired, Dr. Neumann is still at it and has seized the opportunity to start over and redesign computers and software from a ?clean slate.?

He is leading a team of researchers in an effort to completely rethink how to make computers and networks secure, in a five-year project financed by the Pentagon?s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa, with Robert N. Watson, a computer security researcher at Cambridge University?s Computer Laboratory.

?I?ve been tilting at the same windmills for basically 40 years,? said Dr. Neumann recently during a lunchtime interview at a Chinese restaurant near his art-filled home in Palo Alto, Calif. ?And I get the impression that most of the folks who are responsible don?t want to hear about complexity. They are interested in quick and dirty solutions.?

An Early Voice for Security

Dr. Neumann, who left Bell Labs and moved to California as a single father with three young children in 1970, has occupied the same office at SRI for four decades. Until the building was recently modified to make it earthquake-resistant, the office had attained notoriety for the towering stacks of computer science literature that filled every cranny. Legend has it that colleagues who visited the office after the 1989 earthquake were stunned to discover that while other offices were in disarray from the 7.1-magnitude quake, nothing in Dr. Neumann?s office appeared to have been disturbed.

A trim and agile man, with piercing eyes and a salt-and-pepper beard, Dr. Neumann has practiced tai chi for decades. But his passion, besides computer security, is music. He plays a variety of instruments, including bassoon, French horn, trombone and piano, and is active in a variety of musical groups. At computer security conferences it has become a tradition for Dr. Neumann to lead his colleagues in song, playing tunes from Gilbert and Sullivan and Tom Lehrer.

Until recently, security was a backwater in the world of computing. Today it is a multibillion-dollar industry, though one of dubious competence, and safeguarding the nation?s computerized critical infrastructure has taken on added urgency. President Obama cited it in the third debate of the presidential campaign, focusing on foreign policy, as something ?we need to be thinking about? as part of the nation?s military strategy.

Social Media Agency Feature - Langoor

Who are we?

We are a web services and products and social media agency.

We launch websites, products and experiences that have a real impact in the online world. By focusing on a balance of the user?s experience and an organisation?s requirements, we help our clients get results. In fact we pride ourselves on our ability to deliver our clients? needs.

We began as a living room project but now we have grown into a team of about 50 people working in offices on two continents. And we have no intention of slowing down.

What?s in the name?

Besides the fact that Langoor (or the Great Indian Langoor) is a type of monkey only found in India, ?Langoor? also colloquially means ?crazy? in Hindi.

We took the name because it reflects our approach: think unconventionally and laterally. Wildly pursue and realize great ideas in the online world.

What we do?

Websites. Products. Experiences. Those are the fruits of what we do. These things empower our clients, giving them the means to fully engage with their audience and create relationships to last a lifetime.

In practice you can divide what we do in two parts ? Products (intellectual property, we invest in) and Services.

Products

langoor.mobi ? langoor.mobi is a a patent-pending technology that helps you convert your existing desktop website and make it mobile friendly easily.

langoor.biz ? langoor.biz is a web based business transaction management system focused on retail companies

langoor.net ? langoor.net is a free online tool where you build your website and host it online simultaneously.

Services

* Digital Strategy & Online Marketing

* Responsive Web Design (We specialise in mobile, tablet an tv web experiences)

* Retained Web Services (you focus on your business and we?ll look after your online presence)

* Custom Systems (Phone apps, intranets, facebook apps and complicated web based systems ? we?ve got it covered)

Why we do it?

We were frustrated by a marketplace saturated with generic website companies full of buzzwords and empty promises. We also wanted to create an organisation that invested in web-focused technology while listening to clients.

We are all about wide and valuable impact. We help people reach their full potential online.

How we evolve?

The pains of growth involve scaling effectively without losing the essence of being lean and nimble, like a startup.

So we work in small groups formed of different skill sets. All our teams have team names, keeping with the theme of monkeys. Some of the names include Gorillaz, Bonobos, Lemurs, King Kongs.

As an organisation we are very transparent. We share a lot ? open Skype threads, emails, etc! Also we read a lot ? a LOT!?These things help us keep up and grow.

Social responsibility in social media

We believe social media is not a fad, it is merely a medium; an evolution of technology such that people can engage with each other more easily.

If you think of social media as a medium and not the end, your responsibility and approach to it is the same as it would be in the real world.

Would you lie to your customers about your brand on TV? What about newspapers, or in person? What about fake users ? do they exist in the real world?

There are many such questions and as an agency we do not tackle them based on the medium, but what the brand stands for.

Need of the hour

We are sure laws will be necessary for privacy, bullying, adult content, etc. But we believe laws should largely be focused on the problems that come as a result of the medium, not restricting the medium itself or all the factors that have resulted in this phenomenal growth of the technology itself.

There are three key things we come across often that we are happy to share:

1. Organisations who do best in social media are the ones who shift from trying to ?control their image? to ?being themself?. It is very important to build communities and engage with them on an ongoing basis.

2. Social media is about being transparent and personal. It is merely a medium that helps you reach out faster ? again, ensure that you stay true to your brand values.

3. It is ok to do what suits you. If you only want to use Facebook for great deals ? that is fine. If you want to use Twitter for support ? go for it. You do not have to mould around ?technology? lingo and what others are doing ? let it do the work for you for your objectives as an organisation.

Did we just share that?

Facebook can be a really tough platform to create campaigns in sometimes. Back in mid 2010, we were about to go live with a large campaign for a known brand. Their offline products were already in the market and had campaign information diverting the audience to Facebook.

Except, the day we were meant to be live ? our Facebook campaign app would not work. We spent hours in panic trying to work out what went wrong, until we realised other app developers were facing the same problem. Turns out, it was a bug thanks to a Facebook developer and we were out of action for two days.

We had to work really hard to convince the client to stay on the Facebook platform after that campaign!?We started having ?range of dates? for go live after that?

They work with us

Some of our clients can be seen here.

Unfortunately we can?t reveal all of them, but we have worked on more than 400 projects and with more than a 100 clients.

Industry as we foresee

Very soon, the focus is going to come back to accessibility to the medium rather than the medium itself.?For this industry to grow sustainably in India or the world, we are going to need to work out ways for brands to be in front of the user when:

a) they face the problem you can offer a solution to

b) help them make an important lifestyle choice

c) be part of their social conversation (offline or online)

d) become available/facilitate their decisions through tech access points

Conventional ?social? media will not have access to a user at all of these points. Personalised content will be served in different forms at different points, and agencies like ours will need to help organisations understand that. That is where we see growth.

A day without Internet?

Would not be too bad. But just one day ? and then you?d write a blog post the next day about what it was like.

Lastly, are you hiring?

We?re always looking for the right people to join our team. Please feel free to drop by our office, ask one of us out for a coffee or email us if you want to know more.

How to Fix Up Your Home's Bifold Doors

Your simplest and least expensive option is to paint the doors. Start by cleaning the surface of any dust, dirt, or grease. (The last is most likely to be found on kitchen doors.) When the surface is clean and dry, bury any dark colors using a "high-hiding" primer, and then apply a coat of your desired hue. Replace the doors' bland wood or plastic knobs with better-looking ones made of porcelain, glass, or metal; you can also use drawer or door pulls. If you can't find knobs you like at your hardware store or home center, check out rejuvenation.com.

In many cases, louvered doors are installed merely as the default option (they were all the lumberyard had in stock), not because airflow through the closet is important. If you're not concerned about ventilation, you can cover the slats with ?-inch-thick painted or wallpapered lauan panels. Cut the panels to size using a circular saw equipped with a 150-tooth plywood blade, and guide the saw with a straightedge clamped to the panel. To avoid chipping, place the panel with the veneer facing down when you make your cuts. After the paper (or paint) is applied to the panels, glue them in place with construction adhesive.

By the way, a better-quality bifold can really improve a home's interior. If you search the Web or visit lumberyards, you'll find bifold doors with a variety of designs and features, such as arched panels or glass panels (known as lites). You don't have to settle for basic paint-grade pine: Bifolds are made out of oak and maple too.

Tips to Keep Your Cellphone Charged in a Power Outage - The Blaze

Many on the eastern seaboard probably kept their cellphones on the charger as much as possible yesterday to ensure it would be fully juiced in preparation for a power outage. With more than 7 million remaining in a blackout after Hurricane Sandy swept through with high winds and massive flooding, keeping cellphones alive in the hours to days it might take for service to return is not impossible if you make some small behavior changes.

The website Quartz has some tips for stretching your battery power:

  • Use your laptop: You can charge your cellphone through your laptop battery (provided that?s fully juiced too), if you have a cord to connect the two.
Tips to Keep Your Cellphone Charged in a Power Outage

(Photo: Shutterstock.com)

  • Turn off Wi-Fi:?Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other radios can drain your battery. You can find these off switches in the ?settings? section of most phones.
  • Turn it off completely: As painful as it may sound, if you?re not using it, turn it off. This will help ensure you have the mobile phone for what it was originally created for in the first place: emergencies.
  • Send texts: When communication is vital, sending a quick text message could take less power than a full on phone conversation.
  • Charge it in your car: If you or a friend has a car with a cellphone charger that hopefully fits your specific model, then you?re in luck. Turning on the car and plugging in the device could give you an extra boost to get you through.

Also, as much as you might want to snap photos of the damage around you from the storm, consider whipping out your old point -and-shoot camera and using that instead. Having dozens of apps open and running will drain batteries as well. Shut down apps that you don?t need.

Be sure to check out Quartz?s full article for more details on making your cellphone last here.

(AP) ? Greece's general government debt is projected to stand at 189.1 percent of gross domestic product in 2013, figures in next year's revised budget show.

The budget submitted to Parliament on Wednesday shows the general government deficit is predicted at 5.2 percent of GDP, compared with 4.2 percent predicted in the preliminary draft of the budget that had been submitted at the start of the month.

Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras submitted the revised figures just before lawmakers began voting on a privatization bill that will test the country's fractious governing coalition.

Republican New Jersey Governor Christie praises Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a fierce critic of Barack Obama, praised the president and the federal government's response as the brutal storm Sandy swept through his state and caused widespread damage and power outages.

Christie has attacked Obama repeatedly on the campaign trail and said the Democrat does not deserve a second term in the White House, instead backing Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the November 6 election.

But on Tuesday, just hours after the worst of the once-hurricane knocked out power for 2.4 million people in the state just south of New York City, Christie applauded Obama and his administration's Federal Emergency Management Agency in interviews on nearly every major television network.

"The federal government response has been great. I was on the phone at midnight again last night with the president personally," he told NBC's "Today" program.

"The president has been outstanding in this. The folks at FEMA ... have been excellent," said Christie, once thought to be a contender for the White House or Romney's vice presidential pick.

The governor's praise comes just a week ahead of the presidential election, with polls showing the race as a dead heat. The monster storm has caused havoc up and down the East Coast, forcing Obama and Romney to suspend their campaigns for two days.

On "CBS This Morning," Christie said he spoke with Obama three times on Monday as the storm hit.

Obama on Monday declared New Jersey a major disaster area so the state can quickly receive federal aid.

"I can't thank the president enough for that," Christie told CBS.

Del Oro Students Rally To Raise Breast Cancer Awareness ? CBS ...

LOOMIS (CBS13) ? High school students are proving it?s never too early to make health a top priority as they rallied to raise awareness about breast cancer and early detection.

More than 1,200 students, teachers and breast cancer survivors came together to fight cancer at Del Oro High School.

?Our rally will make a difference because it will raise awareness to people who don?t know much about breast cancer,? student Brandon Bousmn said.

While current statistics of the cancer are rare for those under the age of 20, studies show it?s even more possible today that woman and even men develop breast cancer.

Students were all decked out in pink, hoping they can tackle the cure.

?It will bring awareness to teenagers. We understand how much it affects us but we don?t understand that a ton of people are affected with it; and that, there are steps you can take to prevent it,? said Analise Heinritz.

Even the school?s principal says the rally is to help teach students about early detection and prevention.

?The biggest is that we can get out of this is having students go home and talk to their parents, and talk to their friends, and get in to see the doctor, and also support people who are going through any sort of cancer,? Principal Dan Gayaldo said.

?They need to get involved and go online and research and be aware of how big breast cancer really is,? student Taylor Dumitru said.

This is the third year the school has raised money for the Susan G. Komen foundation.

More importantly, the rally brings students together to hopefully send a strong message that will last a lifetime.

?By eating healthy and understanding what can happen, understanding there are steps you can take to stop it from happening,? said Libby Runte. ?I do know friends that have been affected; and I understand how big of an impact it will have on your life and I want to make sure that everyone my age knows.?

A study from the University of Washington shows breast cancer is on the rise about 5 percent for woman under the age of thirty. The study also found the disease increases slightly after age 18.

US, EU hopeful of new Iran nuke talks

(AP) ? The U.S. and the European Union said Tuesday they'll press on with sanctions against Iran, even as they hope the promise of new negotiations could lead to a diplomatic solution ending the nuclear standoff.

Appearing together at a news conference in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo before continuing a joint tour of the Balkans in Serbia and Kosovo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said both diplomacy and pressure would continue until Iran makes significant concessions over its disputed uranium enrichment activity.

"We continue to try and find ways to move forward on our negotiations," Ashton told reporters in Sarajevo. She cited contact over the weekend between a top aide and an assistant to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, and said she would be reaching out to Jalili "in the near future."

Still, there appeared to be no significant advance in the process since world powers instructed Ashton last month in New York to speak with Jalili and gauge Iran's seriousness on coming into compliance with its international nuclear negotiations. The West fears Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

The West has demanded that Iran must stop enriching uranium to 20 percent purity, shut down its underground Fordo enrichment site and ship its 20 percent stockpile out of the country. In return, Iran has been offered civilian plane spare parts and 20 percent-enriched nuclear fuel for its medical research reactor in Tehran.

Clinton said the U.S. message to Iran is clear. "The window remains open to resolve the international community's concerns about your nuclear program diplomatically and to relieve your isolation, but that window cannot remain open indefinitely. Therefore, we hope that there can be serious good-faith negotiations commenced soon."

Iran has sent mixed signals on its nuclear program. World powers cited increased flexibility from Iran in September when they agreed to lay the groundwork for a new round of negotiations, and on Tuesday Iran's Foreign Ministry said the standoff could be resolved if the U.S. and its partners recognize Iran's right to produce nuclear fuel.

But senior Iranian officials also have threatened to boost enrichment levels if the West doesn't ease sanctions. And the U.S. and its partners say measures that are crippling the Iranian economy will remain in force until Tehran first starts coming into compliance with its international obligations.

Clinton and Ashton spoke during the first leg of their tour of the Balkans, where they are urging rivals ethnic groups and governments to settle their differences for the good of their nations.

Seventeen years after the U.S.-led intervention ended Bosnia's civil war, Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats are split on how to unify the country or even to dissolve their federation entirely into separate ethnic parts. The Serb republic and the Bosniak-Croat federation have their own governments and parliaments, held together only weakly by a three-member presidency that Clinton and Ashton met with.

Clinton called efforts by some to roll back the Dayton Accords passed during the presidency of her husband "totally unacceptable," a reference to Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik's call for the dissolution of Bosnia. He has also denied the genocide of Bosnia's Muslims in the 1990s.

Clinton urged all Bosnia's leaders to "put aside their political differences, put aside the rhetoric of dissolution, secession and denial of what tragically happened in the war." She and Ashton said the country's slow pace of reforms and the inability of leaders to look past their ethnic constituencies are holding back its hopes of joining the EU and NATO, and leaving it behind neighbors such as Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo.

Later in Belgrade, the two met Serbia's nationalist president, Tomislav Nikolic, and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic.

Clinton told them that normalizing ties with Kosovo, which broke off from Serbia four years ago, is critical for Serbian aspirations of entering the 27-nation European Union. She urged progress in talks with Kosovo about issues such as freedom of movement, customs, utilities and government services, without calling for Belgrade to immediately recognize the independence of its former province.

After Serbia, the pair flew together on Clinton's plane to Kosovo's capital of Pristina, where they'll press top officials on similar matters on Wednesday. Afterward, Ashton will drop off the trip and Clinton will travel on to Croatia and Albania, NATO's two newest members.

Tranquilizers Can Affect Sleep, Part 2

Backland also proved that the students who exercised daily were able to enjoy more of the beneficial deep delta sleep than the students who did not exercise.? Students following their regular fitness program tended to awaken refreshed.? They did not develop any of the psychological difficulties experienced by those students deprived of activity. The study shows that if we don?t exercise properly, we?re just too wound up to benefit from a night?s sleep.? We drag ourselves from bed every morning, our nerves jangled, eyes baggy.? Yet, by combining a program of intermittent relaxation with a sensible daily exercise routine, each of us would soon find ourselves taking steps to dreamland. An excellent approach to relaxation is described by Dr. Edmund Jacobson in his book, You Can Sleep Well (McGraw-Hill). Jacobson points out that relaxing requires release of tension not only in the arms and legs, but in the breathing apparatus, forehead and brow, eyes and speech muscles.? These are his instructions: Lie comfortably in bed, have no part of your body bearing on another, nor even an arm or hand under your head.? Concentrate.? You?ll find that your eyes and mouth, your forehead, cheeks, and your general muscular structure are tense.? Let go, putting your entire weight on the bed.? Don?t let any of your weight be supported by your muscles. Next, brake your thoughts by thinking positively and exclusively about your breathing.? Concentrating on your breathing will take all of your attention and drive out all other mental activity.? By practicing total relaxation of body and mind, you?ll soon experience a pleasant, floating sensation, well on your way to that first stage of sleep. But what about exercise?? The most elementary principle of exercise is that almost any form of gentle and slow movement will rest muscles that are tired from being in one position too long.? You can exercise anywhere, even at work ? whether your job be reading. Writing, typing, cooking, or any number of ?sitting-down? jobs.? Stop frequently and turn your head from side to side, slowly and gently.? Or stand up and bend over from the waist without straining.? Let your whole upper body hung limp as possible; let your arms dangle as though they belong to a rag doll.? When you straighten, you will be surprised at the relaxed feeling in those tired muscles. Dr. Gary S. Sy, a Filipino gerontologist, suggests a simple exercise to unwind and relax anytime: Put your hands behind your head and pull your elbows back.? Then return your arms to your sides.? Now put your hands behind your back and slide your thumbs up as high as you can.

The Redheaded Hostess ? What are your favorite games?

Oct 30 2012

With the Holiday season fast approaching, and the Fall weather in full swing

my family has been in ?game mode? for some reason.

We just feel like playing games.

And I love it. ?There is something so bonding and worthwhile when you sit down at a table together to play a game. So many memories are made.

So I want to ask you?

What are your favorite family games?

I am looking for everything from good ol? classics to the latest and greatest.

So I will start.

I don?t know how old this game is ? but my brother and his wife introduced it to us.

It is called ?Spot It?, and it comes in a little can like this.

Each card has these little pictures on it ? and I don?t know how they did it, but each card has one match with every other card.

There are a few ways to play this game, but this is how we do it:

1- You put one card upside down in the center and then deal out the rest evenly with the players.

2- You then flip the center card over and you frantically try to find what matches on your card. ?When you find the match you yell it out ?ladybug!? (or whatever your match is) and then set your card on top of the center card. ?Your card is now the new card everyone is trying to match. It is maddening because so often you just barely ?spot? your match and then someone sets their card down and you now have to find a totally new match.

3- The first one out of cards wins.

Let me tell you why I like this game.

  • First: ?it is addicting
  • Second: ?all ages can play
  • Third: ?each round lasts no more than a couple of minutes
  • Fourth: ?because the rounds are so short, people can jump in and out of the game as different responsibilities pull them away. ?(This game went on for over an hour at my mom?s the other night. ?I think I played at three different intervals).
  • Fifth: ?Its just some cards. ?Easy game to set up and clean up.
  • Sixth: ?it is just plain fun

Each tin has 54 cards. ?If you have a big family, you may want two IDENTICAL games.

OK? there is my recommendation.

What are yours?
