Kurdish protesters clash with Turkish security forces

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Kurdish protesters clashed with security forces in Turkey's southeast on Sunday ahead of demonstrations planned across the country to pressure the government to carry out reforms.

A few hundred protesters burned tires and closed a main road near the Cizre district of Sirnak province. Some threw firebombs at police who responded with water cannon and teargas.

Security forces killed an 18-year-old man and wounded 10 others when they fired on a group protesting against the construction of a gendarmerie outpost in the Kurdish-dominated southeast on Friday.

It was the most violent incident since a ceasefire was called in March by Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and threatens to derail a nascent peace process with the state.

Turkey's main pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) called for protest marches around the country on Sunday, raising fears of violence, while a gay pride march is due in Istanbul, as anti-government protesters seek to back gay rights.

Around 10,000 protesters marched on Istanbul's Taksim Square on Saturday, which has been at the centre of weeks of anti-government demonstrations, but were prevented from entering the square by riot police.

The protest had been planned as part of larger, anti-government demonstrations unrelated to the Kurdish peace process, but became a voice of solidarity with the Kurds after Friday's killing.

The PKK took up arms against the state in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state, but has since moderated its goals to autonomy. PKK militants began withdrawing from Turkish territory to bases in northern Iraq last month as part of a deal between Ocalan and Turkey to end a conflict that has killed 40,000 people.

Is Talisker losing control of Canyons' real estate? | The Salt Lake ...

Ski industry ? Questions surface as new company brought in to oversee development.

After turning Canyons Resort over to Vail to operate, Talisker apparently has lost some control over developing its real estate holdings around the Park City ski area.

That?s a concern to Summit County Manager Robert Jasper, who is trying to figure out who is liable for fulfilling pledges to provide amenities, such as a golf course and affordable housing, in exchange for previous county approvals that helped turn Canyons into a major development, Utah?s largest ski area geographically.

?

Changing roles

Talisker has controlled four of seven seats on Summit County?s Resort Visitors Management Association board, said county manager Robert Jasper, but now it will have two, while the other two will be held by representatives of Alvarez & Marsal.

"To us, what?s going on is, they?re [Talisker] no longer the master developer, so who do we hold accountable for what?s supposed to be done?" Jasper said Thursday, a day after he briefed Summit County Council members on the evolving management situation at Canyons Resort.

The answer is a company called Flera LLC, a subsidiary of one of Talisker?s major underwriters, the investment-management firm V?rde Partners Inc.

A statement released late Thursday by Flera said "it is business as usual at Canyons, and our goal is to make this transition as seamless and effective as possible for all of our guests, residents, employees and operators."

As Jasper understands the situation, when Canadian-based Talisker Corp. acquired Canyons from a dying American Skiing Co. in July 2008, the ski resort and about 4 million square feet of developable real estate were put under the control of Talisker Canyons Finance Co.

While Talisker Corp. was the major player in the finance company, Jasper said V?rde Partners had a pivotal position as a key investor.

Through its subsidiary, Flera, V?rde Partners now appears to be calling the shots for Talisker Canyons Finance Co. and has brought in Alvarez & Marsal, which describes itself as "a global professional services firm specializing in turnaround and interim management," to oversee Canyons? development properties until a permanent property manager is selected.

"They call themselves the ?interim manager,? " Jasper said, noting that another V?rde Partners subsidiary, Leaseco, oversaw the lease agreement that makes Vail Resorts Inc. the operator of Canyons for the next 300 years, starting at a fee of $25 million annually.

His concern is that, "as part of the approval for The Canyons going way back ? we have requirements that they build a golf course, develop a transit plan to work with us to minimize traffic, build affordable housing and a conference center in return for the ability to develop lodging and hotels and all kinds of things."

story continues below

None have been done, he said, although work has been started on 10 or 11 holes of the promised 18-hole golf course.

"We have a strong interest that that golf course is completed," Jasper added. "We have approvals. We can withdraw them if we believe the conditions [for those approvals] are not met. ? We could be going backward. I don?t know yet."

The Flera statement provided assurances that the process is moving forward and that it is merely stepping to the forefront after being involved in the resort since 2010 and helping to finance $85 million in improvements.

Calls to Talisker and Alvarez & Marsal were not returned Thursday.

Vail Resorts? spokeswoman Kelly Ladyga said only that "we view this as an internal Talisker matter that does not impact our efforts or arrangements at Canyons."

To Voters, Obama's Polarizing Climate Plan Pits Environment Against Jobs

Yahoo News asked Americans to comment on President Barack Obama's climate change plan, parts of which he unveiled in a speech on Tuesday. Below are excerpted responses we received.

***

Plan is devastating for way of life in coalfields: Living near Roanoke in the coalfields of southwest Virginia, it was difficult to continue to hope for economic recovery in this region after President Obama's recent speech. The cities, towns and communities in the area are dependent on one thing: coal.

Obama's words are a final bell sadly tolling this truth: Our way of life is over. If Obama's proposals go through, it will decimate our already languishing economy.

Obama ignores the dark side to the utopian goal of reducing carbon emissions by destroying the coal industry?the truth. Renewable sources of energy are incredibly expensive, undependable and inefficient. Few sources of energy are as cheap and reliable as coal. Rapidly changing energy sources will lead to rising energy costs for households and businesses throughout the nation when few can afford it.

?Lyn Brooks, Roanoke, Va.

***

Seeing both sides: I live in a small town in West Virginia?"coal mine country"?and home to two coal-fired AEP power plants, with another right across the Ohio River in view. The coal mines, the former top industry in West Virginia, have been closed already, which has resulted in thousands of jobs lost for families in this state. And while a lot of the union and power plant workers have found steady work during plant outages and keeping up with the EPA's new regulations on the scrubbers and more, thousands of workers face the inevitability of losing work around here permanently. One of the two power plants was just recently shut down.

I also know the effects of global warming on this planet. Obama is right that we need to act now. The president is on the right track with creating renewable energy sources in this country, and the only way to attempt to mend the damage caused by global warming, prevent future devastation (and catastrophe), and create jobs, thereby elevating our economy, is to see these proposals through.

?Ruqaiyya Noor, New Haven, W.V.

***

Obama's climate speech lacks sexiness: According to a 2008 report from the United Nations Statistics Division, a U.N. division which ensures environmental sustainability and integrates the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs to reverse the loss of environmental resources, the millennium development goals indicators state that China's annual emissions at 7,031,916 accounts for 23.5 percent of the world's emissions and the United States closely behind with 5,461,014 and 18.27 percent of the world's emissions.

Obama says, "So I know these standards don't sound all that sexy, but think of it this way: That's the equivalent of planting 7.6 billion trees and letting them grow for 10 years?all while doing the dishes. It is a great deal and we need to be doing it."

Why has it taken so long to get something done?

?Michael Drentea, San Diego

***

The wrong direction: The American people are struggling to survive and we must help them by expanding the economy and giving them new job opportunities. This plan does the exact opposite. Republican critics in Congress are calling his plan a job-killer that will threaten the economic recovery. We are pulling the rug out from underneath the millions who are struggling to survive.

?Mathew Paul, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

***

'President of hope' owes U.S. more on environment: The president said Tuesday at Georgetown University, "As a president, as a father and as an American, I'm here to say we need to act." This San Francisco father and American agrees. Communities, corporations and humanity must change their behavior. Obama's proposed regulations, incentives and renewables permitting are similarly right, though inadequate. They're feasible examples for future improvement.

First change: Learn these ABCs of species survival. Each person, in every way possible, must make the changes indicated. They are vast, like political will for deferred gratification. (For instance: "We won't build pipelines we can't make clean.") They are immeasurably small?coffee cups re-used, not thrown away to decay and release CO2. These changes are survival imperatives.

?Robert Gunter, San Francisco

***

A solution in search of a problem: President Obama's environmental/green energy agenda has already failed the test of the democratic process. Even when Congress was controlled entirely by Democrats, it recoiled from passing cap and trade. So the president intends to use executive orders and the regulatory process to get his way no matter what Congress or the people think.

The result of all of this, if not stopped, will be a punch in the gut to the weak economy, a loss of jobs, and all for no purpose whatsoever except, as an adviser stated according to the Weekly Standard, to wage a "war on coal."

?Mark Whittington, Houston

***

Leadership when change is needed: Maybe there is hope for humanity after all.

President Obama is finally taking a firm stand on the environment. While unlikely to please everyone, his newly released Climate Action Plan at least promises to break through the political stalemate surrounding climate change, and start us moving in the right direction.

At least as important as the technical solutions Obama offers is the spirit in which he offers them. He refuses to buy into the myth that what's good for the planet is necessarily bad for business.

Change can be difficult, but it is inevitable. It's about time our country began to address climate change in a spirit of leadership rather than fear.

?Anne Michelsen, Champaign County, Ill.

***

Obama emits policy-changing cloud: In his 2008 Democratic nominee victory speech, Barack Obama proclaimed that, generations from now, his win will be remembered as the "?moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal ?" That was five years ago.

Apparently, tide-lowering and planet-healing aren't progressing quickly enough for President Obama. On Tuesday, he emitted some foul smoke of his own as he outlined his plans for climate change regulations with or without congressional approval.

Polls indicate Americans are most concerned with jobs and the economy, so Obama shoves his climate change agenda into the faces of 760,000 people who rely on coal for earning their livelihood?shoves his pet pipe dream into the faces of all of us who will pay higher prices for everything, from electricity to groceries.

Only six months into his second term, this president is in "legacy" mode. Come hell or high water, he's bestowing upon us his lofty footprints.

?Susan Durham, Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition handson video

It's probably not a huge stretch to say that Samsung's Galaxy S 4 running stock Android was the biggest surprise to come out of Google I/O last month. The handset -- officially called Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition -- is now on sale in the Play store for $649 alongside a special version of the HTC One. Spec-wise, the phone is identical to AT&T's 16GB model and supports the same bands (including LTE). It's powered by Qualcomm's 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor with 2GB or RAM and features a 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel camera with flash, removable 2600mAh Li-ion battery and microSD expansion. While we briefly handled the phone at I/O, it wasn't until yesterday that we got to spend some quality time with it. Hit the break for our first impressions and hands-on video.

Good Reads: From a bold vision for China to cyberwarfare to Norwegian fishing

This week's round-up of Good Reads includes China's desire to become the world's main superpower, Edward Snowden's confessional video, the ease of making cyberweapons, eradicating global poverty, and the demise of Norwegian fishermen.

China's Worldview

China?s new president, Xi Jinping, has a bold vision for his country, inspired by its ancient prestige. In Time magazine, Hannah Beech describes how Mr. Xi intends for China to match US military capabilities, becoming the strongest country economically, politically, and culturally.

This ?China Dream,? depending on how Xi shapes his tenure as president, could lead to shifts in international dynamics. ?How China sees the world matters because Chinese aspirations, tastes and fears will shape the lives of billions of people across the globe. Indeed ... China ? and its worldview ? may once again dictate the narrative of our age,? Ms. Beech writes.

But despite its desire to become the world?s main superpower, China must deal with internal issues first, Beech writes. Chief among these is stanching the exodus of the country?s elite ? 150,000 Chinese received permanent residency abroad in 2011. ?When a nation?s elite is ready to bolt at a moment?s notice, it says much about the regime?s lack of legitimacy and its staying power,? David Shambaugh, a China scholar, told Beech.

Hero or traitor?

In a carefully executed leak, former National Security Administration contractor Edward Snowden unveiled documents showing how US government programs mine communication data including people?s e-mails, Facebook posts, and even Skype chats. Digital surveillance is not new, especially during this era of heightened national security awareness. Gathering electronic information is legal under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, but Mr. Snowden said the government is redefining what is constitutional, creating ?architecture of oppression.?

In an identity-revealing video interview with Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian, Mr. Snowden explained why people should be worried about the government?s actions.?

?Even if you are not doing anything wrong, you are being watched and recorded. And the storage capabilities of these systems increases every year, consistently by orders of magnitude,? Snowden said, adding that just a wrong call could raise suspicion. ?Then they can use the system to go back in time and scrutinize every decision you?ve ever made, every friend you?ve ever discussed something with, and attack you on that basis to sort of derive suspicion from an innocent life and paint anyone in the context of a wrongdoer.?

The fallout of his actions is not yet known as the United States arranges to press charges against the whistle-blower. Whether he is a hero or a traitor depends on how one weighs the balance between civil liberties and national security.

Article Marketing Tips: Trust Me, I'm a Writer (How to Gain Reader ...

Author: Steve Shaw | Total views: 58 Comments: 0
Word Count: 830 Date:

We all know the benefits of writing and submitting articles online. Your business and website benefits by providing useful information that your readers find helpful, and in turn, you increase your reputation as a reliable source of information in your niche. This leads to more sales, more hits on your website, and a gradual increase in overall traffic. But there is something else that article marketing can bring you that other forms of online advertising lack: trust.

Trust is an essential part of any supplier-consumer relationship; if I can't trust you to deliver a product that will work, why would I choose to do business with you? When it comes to online business, this trust is even more important: without a face-to-face interaction, you are relying on your online reputation to bring in business.

This is where article marketing comes in. By showing your readers you know what you're talking about, you can develop a level of trust that simply isn't possible with fleeting side-screen ads and other online delivery systems.

So how can you make the most of this opportunity? Here are some article marketing tips for using your articles to build trust with your readers:

1. Be Consistent

By consistently creating and distributing articles, you can show you have a lot to say about your niche, and that you're a dependable source of information.

When you've got a whole heap of articles about your niche and keep producing more, this tells customers that you are here to stay: a fixture in your area of expertise, you can easily be relied upon.

2. Teach Your Readers

Not only is teaching one of the easiest ways to produce a lot of articles easily, but it means readers looking for information in your niche will turn to you for the answers they need. If your readers can rely on you for dependable information, then that is a good sign they can rely on you for other related services.

Make sure you provide unique information, in order to stand out from the crowd. By giving your readers something they can't find elsewhere - a new perspective on frequently-discussed topics, for example - you'll come across as the expert in your field, and will more likely be seen as the authority readers would trust in a given niche.

3. Be Idiosyncratic

Idiosyncratic is a big word for something really small: the uniqueness of your voice. Everyone has their own way of speaking, their own style of delivery, and it's translated onto paper (or Word document!) when you write. Instead of seeing your articles as just throwaway submissions, try and look at them as your chance to communicate directly with potential customers. Let your style and personality shine through, and you'll stand out from the crowd as more than just an encyclopedia.

Remember that both you and your readers are real human beings - so don't try to sound like a computer! Share your experiences, thoughts, and even successes and failures, in order to create an emotional connection with your readers that will keep them coming back for more of your genuine, heartfelt advice.

4. Encourage Your Readers

If you're teaching through articles, chances are that the vast majority of your readers will be beginners who are just starting out - those are the people that are most likely to turn to the internet for advice. However, being a novice can be a frustrating experience, especially if you're already good at other things, and feel that your new skill is somewhat below par.

Empathize with your readers on this point, and encourage them to keep going. By showing them you know what it feels like to be in their position, they are far more likely to stick to their learning - and to be grateful to you for helping them through your empathy and encouragement.

5. Speak Plainly

It's always tempting to write in elaborate sentences and big fancy words - but most people will find this to be a turn-off. Avoid industry jargon and complex terms, and instead stick to plain, simple English that everyone can get on board with. If you have to use an abbreviation or technical term, make sure you explain it in a way that everybody understands - that way, nobody will feel left out, and your readers will appreciate you making the effort to communicate with them in a way they understand.

You'll notice some common themes in this advice I'm giving:

Be yourself, write in your own voice, teach, encourage, and write in plain English. As you're getting started, focus on just a few of these at a time. Writing is an art form and a skill - you will get better at accomplishing these points the more articles you write.

The Man With A 'Battery Operated Brain'

He calls himself the "human with the battery operated brain" because he does, in fact, have electrodes in his head, put there by his New Zealand doctors.

Andrew Johnson (also known as "Cyber AJ") a few months ago was a young, 39 year old, early-onset Parkinsonian who tremored constantly. His hands shook. His neck crimped. His body was stiff. He had balance problems, voice problems, trouble speaking. He can make those problems disappear now by hitting a switch. It's amazing to see. This video begins with him looking totally normal; he talks a bit, then, when he's ready, he pushes the "off" button, and the disease comes roaring back. Instantly.

This procedure, called "deep brain stimulation" is now used all over the world. When neurons in the brain start firing in ways that cause shakes and tics, it is sometimes possible, says neurosurgeon Andres Lozano, to control those tics by adding or subtracting electricity.

So what we've been able to do is to pinpoint where these disturbances are in the brain and we've been able to intervene within the circuits in the brain ... We do that with electricity. We use electricity to dictate how they fire and we try to block their behavior using electricity.

Over the years, these implants can pinpoint the errant neurons with increasing accuracy adding or subtracting electricity as needed. In Andrew's case, the implants turned him from a "39 year old trapped in an 89 year old body" to what passes for normal guy ? at least when the current is on. As he says on his blog, youngandshaky.com, the surgery went fast.

I only had a small patch of hair removed from my head and chest and the wires pulled down and plugged into the neuro-stimulator which was implanted in my chest. Straight after the surgery I was in obscene amounts of pain (in my head) but double the normal dose of morphine soon put paid to that. While I was in recovery (incidentally longer than the time it took to do the surgery) there were lots of people milling around talking and getting ready to go to lunch etc. I am sure they were talking quietly but to me the slightest whisper was like a dagger to the skull and I remember thinking they better be quiet soon or I was going to get out of that bed and make them. That's if moving without falling to the floor in a crumpled heap was a possibility. The effects of the morphine soon kicked in and I started to feel halfway human again, albeit now a human with a battery operated brain. Cyber-AJ on the loose!

A few days later, after the staff had adjusted his monitor to compensate for his brain dysfunction, so that his body could move without shaking, (those settings will change; Parkinson's is a progressive disease), Andrew Johnson was released.

[T]he effects of being powered up are almost instantaneous. I have required several tweaks and medication adjustments but that is to be expected. I do feel a great deal better, certainly not to the point I was pre-Parkinson's but 100% better than I have felt in recent years. So from that perspective it has been a dream come true as I explained to a good friend Andy McDowell who came to visit me in hospital.

Andy McDowell also has Parkinson's, and he's written a poem about it to explain the disease to his children. "The only positive thing about this [expletive deleted] disease is meeting fantastic people like Andy and his wife Kate," says AJ. Here's the poem, "Smaller, A Poem About Parkinson's Disease", read by Andy's daughter Lily.

Thanks to blogger Jason Kottke for pointing me to AJ's story.

Investing In Tesla? - Seeking Alpha

Today i was reading an article about Tesla and also heard from a friend who has done very well on his Tesla purchase. Then I watched this video, which you can take a look at below, where the Tesla technology is displayed. There is no ?next? Steve Jobs. He was unique in every way. However, if you believe that a big part of investing is finding strong leaders who will end up transforming entire industries and making their shareholders rich at the same time, then it seems very reasonable to ask if Elon Musk is the next leader of this century.

There Is One Problem

I usually invest based on fundamentals. Here are some of Tesla?s numbers:

Market Cap: $11.5B
P/E: N/A (company has been losing money every quarter)

But..revenues are increasing rapidly:

I find it hard to invest based on those numbers because what I?d be buying is this guy?s vision, the idea that he will end up building something beyond what we?d expect. In a way, this as speculative as it gets. I always look at the upside, which is incredible here. The problem of course is that projects like the ones he is taking on usually fail so it?s fair to think that Tesla could simply be the next company that fails to transform the automobile market.

Do any of you own Tesla? Would you consider doing so?

New approach for risk screening of contaminated land

Following a century of industrialisation, contaminated sites lie abandoned or underutilized all over the world. Now there is a rapid new approach for risk screening of each site, according to studies from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Contaminated land is soil, groundwater or sediment that contains levels of contaminants so high that they exceed natural levels in the environment. Decisions about remediating contaminated land are often based on risk estimates derived from generic guideline values. Guideline values are used at the screening stage of the risk assessment and have been developed to represent "safe" levels of these contaminants applicable over large geographical areas (usually countries). These guideline values indicate what may be considered acceptable across the majority of sites. Guideline values more appropriate to specific sites can usually also be calculated. Levels of toxins in the soil exceeding the guideline values may entail risks to humans and the environment.

The simplified system, using general and even site-specific guideline values, may not always capture the true risk of contaminants at the site. Using guideline values can lead to overly conservative remedial decisions, resulting in costly clean-ups that may not be necessary.

The guideline values do not take into account the toxicity of the contaminant mixture or the bioavailability of the toxins, i.e. the extent to which they are taken up by plants or animals at the site. Bioavailability depends on a number of factors such as soil properties.

"One of the most important factors governing the bioavailability of many metals is the soil's pH. In acidic soils, these metals are generally more available to animals and plants. It is estimated that acidic soils cover 30% of the planet's ice-free land area," says Emily Chapman at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

Emily Chapman's research studies in Gothenburg and Wolfville (Canada) have shown that site-specific risk screening can be improved using a triad approach with tests in undisturbed soil samples from the contaminated site.

"We have developed a simple, rapid triad approach for ecological risk-screening of metal-contaminated acidic soils. It takes into account the contaminants' site-specific chemical properties, mixtures and toxicities. The effects of contaminants can also be distinguished by examining the activity of organisms in soil from the site," says Emily Chapman.

This approach can improve early risk estimates of metal-contaminated acidic soil and tell us more about the contaminants' true site-specific risks. More information also makes it easier to choose the right remediation technology and to determine when it is necessary to excavate the soil.

"The risk-screening approach developed in our research project could also be used for monitoring in-situ (on-site) remediation of acidic metal-contaminated soil" says Emily Chapman.

How To Find The Right Teacher In Martial Arts | Content for Reprint

Author: Andrew Toth | Total views: 208 Comments: 0
Word Count: 1050 Date:

It goes without saying that not all teachers (of any subject) are equal and that is probably multiplied to the nth degree in the martial arts which doesn't allow for standardization to quite the same degree as other subjects might. There are of course ongoing attempts at standardization and classification but the martial arts are still very much of a melting pot and one is often left wondering who is teaching what and where did it come from.

Enter the beginner?

Given this prodigious output of styles and teachers, how is a beginner, who knows virtually nothing about the martial arts?how is such a person to find the right teacher?

And is that the right question?

Maybe there is no "right" teacher. Maybe the right teacher for me is not the right teacher for you.

So it can get a bit complicated?

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. Questions such as these simply do not arise for most people. They join their neighborhood club, pay their fees, get graded a few times, get a nice colored belt maybe even a trophy or two, tell their friends they are a brown belt in such and such a style and?that is all they want. And I'm not here to argue with that, but?

If you're real serious, if martial arts is your reason for living, you will need to find the Right Teacher and that means that you will have to do some serious searching. Both internally and externally.

Why?

Because the Right Teacher will not appear miraculously on the horizon when you first decide to be the next Bruce Lee. And so, almost by default, beginners tends to think of their first teacher as THE RIGHT TEACHER! Which is understandable because they don't know any better. They have nothing to compare their first teacher to, so the first teacher is THE BEST. The beginner is totally convinced of that.

However, as time moves on the beginner may begin to experience some disquiet. Some things don't add up. The first teacher may be a bit overweight, or not as fit as he could be. Maybe he doesn't answer questions satisfactorily?but hey! nobody's perfect and all things considered the first teacher is still The Best, and that's all there is to it, right? Nonetheless there is talk...there is talk of another teacher down the road who is (blasphemy!) even better. The beginner puts all those preposterous notions aside of course, but...

There are now some cracks in the facade.

Not fatal, but it is through these cracks that the doubts seep in.

That, at least, is what happened to me. I was absolutely convinced that my first teacher was the best, but?I checked out the new teacher down the road (no harm in that, is there?). Then I joined up and started the cycle all over again. And then again and again and again?

I tried judo, ju-jutsu, Hsing-i, Pa-kua, Tai chi, Shaolin and a number of other styles the names of which I now forget. Nothing changed. The teachers were all promising to begin with and, truth be told, they were all quite capable in their own way and I learned a lot from each and every one of them but they were only technicians. They knew the techniques, and that is all they knew. And I wanted more, so I moved on. Just what I wanted I was still not sure of?

An astute reader will now see the obvious. One's Search, one's Quest, is part of one's over-all Training. A very important part. Why?

Because it is all part of a learning curve. You are learning not only new techniques but you are learning something infinitely more important: the Art of Discernment! The Art of separating the wheat from the chaff. The Art of separating the Real from the False?

And yes, it is also the Art of recognizing the Real Teacher when he or she finally appears.

You see, that is the secret. Finding the right teacher is only the half of it. Recognizing them to be such is by far the more difficult and important half.

Let me ask you a question: how often does a student find the right teacher and continue to walk on by and not know the difference?

It happens more often than you might think! I've seen it again and again and again!

The thing to bear in mind is that the Right Teacher may not be (and usually isn't) the Hollywood stereotype. The Right Teacher may be an unassuming little fellow who runs a little corner store, is disarmingly self-effacing and has maybe one or two students who are equally unimpressive. In short this is not really the sort of person who matches your mental image of a deadly warrior. Or he may be crude and rude and obnoxious. And (blasphemy again!) he may not have your best interests at heart!

In other words, not all Masters fit the Hollywood mold! You really do have to keep your wits about you on this because the Right Teacher will confound your expectations nearly every time!

The "secret" then is to keep training, keep looking and to develop the Power of Discernment so that you can see below superficial appearances. (This will stand you in good stead not only in your search for a teacher and but also when you are in a fight!)

There is a saying that when the student is ready, the Teacher will appear. And that will happen when the student has developed a keen sense of discernment.*

*Author's note: by discernment I do not mean cynicism. The "been there, done that" attitude will not help you find a Teacher and if perchance you do, that Teacher will not be interested in teaching you. Real discernment has a quality of humility: you don't know the answer, you don't even know if there is an answer, but you will not stop searching.

Andrew Toth is the author of the book, Shaolin Temple Kung Fu, which is arguably the most advanced book available on the subject of martial arts. It is a must for anyone who is serious about this subject. You can read it HERE
