OPTICAL DELUSION? | Telecom Ramblings

This article is by a new contributor to Telecom Ramblings, Gunnar Oddsson, who has been in the business for the last 17 years, working as a technician, project manager, consultant and a business owner.

On Tuesday, April 4th, 2012, Anton Troianovski wrote an article in The Wall Street Journal titled:??OPTICAL DELUSION? FIBER BOOMS AGAIN, DESPITE BUST.??

The article focuses on the sudden and somewhat, unexpected increase in fiber optic cable installation throughout the United States. The article takes us back to the year 2000 when the great tech boom reached heights never seen before and as we know, the tech industry took a big hard fall. In the midst of this downturn, fiber optic network owners took a tremendous hit with many going bankrupt. MFN was one of the biggest victims, while others, like Level[3] was able to weather the storm. MFN was known for offering ?Dark Fibers? to service providers who provided data and voice services to their customers. MFN placed fiber optic cables throughout the United States and had a large inventory of installed fibers when they faced bankruptcy. At that time, industry and financial analysts blasted MFN, Level [3] and others for excessive fiber optic installation.

But was it truly excessive????

In Mr. Troianovski?s article, the need for additional fiber is questioned, along with whether Internet video streaming will increase enough to justify more fiber installations.? It also points out that with?advanced technology, service providers can transmit more and more information through a single strand of fiber optic and therefore, the need for any more fiber installation is put into question. This line of thinking is flawed.

The advantages of fiber optics over copper can not be disputed. Without fiber optics, today?s Internet would not exist as we know it. Businesses depend on fast, secure and reliable fiber optic networks to keep the economy running and households are requiring more bandwidth for entertainment purposes.? Thousands of fiber optic networks have been installed throughout The United States and around the globe.

Fiber optic networks are complex in design and engineering and it takes months and sometimes years until a network is complete and placed into commission. Networks expand every year as more and more customers sign up for Internet access and the telecommunication landscape changes.

To say that there is enough fiber in the ground, is simply not true. Unless every commercial and residential building in The United States is connected to a fiber optic network, there is not enough fiber in the ground.? (I know it?s a longshot, but can be done!)

The electrical grid is huge and connects every commercial and residential building in The United States to it?s grid. Most buildings are also connected to the old telecommunication system, which is the traditional two pair copper wire. Since fiber optics have overtaken the use of copper, why shouldn?t we connect every building with fiber optics?

It is important to remember, that fiber optic networks are a huge part of our infrastructure. While our government has neglected the infrastructure in the United States for the last 30 years, fiber optic service providers have been busy upgrading our old telecommunication system. All around us, and most visibly, highways and bridges are crumbling under an immense increase in traffic. The water and sewage system needs an upgrade due to increase in population. The electrical grid is in shock over additional requirements from consumers for more electricity. Who can forget the big black out in the North East in 2002? That should simply not happen in any modern society.

Instead of criticizing, we should be thankful for the visionaries who laid down the work 15-20 years ago, for one of the greatest infrastructure improvements taking place for the last 50 years. And the majority of it has been done without government funding. Who knows where the Internet would be today if not for MFN?s and Level [3]?s bold risk taking and future predictions 15 years ago? Maybe they knew what was coming and in order to be ready for what the Internet offers today, they looked ahead. Way further than most of us did.

Technology is always late to catch on with majority of people, especially those who did (or do) not grow up in technology environment. Let?s not forget, that our children (I have two children, ages 10 & 11) are growing up with technology at their fingertips. Schools are computerized and require children to search the Internet for school projects. Homework and schedules are posted on line. Teachers prefer parents to contact them via e-mail rather than face to face meeting or a phone call. Our children will utilize and work on the Internet in ways beyond our dreams.

This is not the place to discuss how fiber optic networks are designed and engineered, but if anybody wants to?criticize?network owners for ?excessive? fiber installation, critics need to have at least some understanding of how and why fiber optic networks are built the way they are built.

If network owners could transmit all the worlds Internet traffic through 144 fibers (common fiber cable size), why wouldn?t they? It would be incredibly cheap and probably the best investment ever to be offered to the public. But that?s simply not possible. I have been building fiber optic networks for service providers for the last 17 years and we are still installing fiber optic cables to commercial buildings and for the last 10 years, Verizon has been pushing fiber to the home (FTTH) and they and others, still have a long way to go.

Cities, towns, highways, seaports and airport authorities are installing fibers to build and connect networks of cameras for our protection. Utility companies use fiber optics to control their power plants and facilities.

Along with an increase in video streaming, the financial sector has been pushing for faster trading speeds, often called ?High Frequency Trading?. These practices look for the fastest point to point connections, often through the shortest possible fiber cabling routes. Along with shorter fiber cable routes, microwave installations are competing, but also working with fiber optic networks on faster data transmissions. By utilizing microwave technology, trading can take place at the speed of light, while fiber optics transmit data at 2/3 of the speed of light. Some network owners use both technologies to transmit data and when microwave transmissions are affected by athmospheric conditions, fiber optics networks often work as a secondary route, despite slower speeds.

But fiber optic network owners are not only betting on the financial sector and Internet video streaming to occupy the majority of available bandwidth. (The SEC is looking into the practices of ?High Frequency Trading? and there are some speculations, that this form of trading will be banned).

3D/4D technology is catching on and there are multiple industries that will benefit tremendously from this technology. The medical industry and manufacturers are utilizing 3D technology for their customers to review products remotely from every angle. The medical industry will soon have surgeons performing surgeries remotely via technology dependent on fiber optic networks.

There is one industry though that will push 3D/4D technology to its limit and beyond and that is the entertainment industry.

Gaming developers are making billions of dollars of online gaming. Call of Duty and Battlefield are the generals that rule Internet gaming. Every year, improvements in electronics and graphics take us closer and closer to real life battles and before we know, we?ll be fighting those battles hooked up to advanced technology that allows us into the game, to fight side by side with our comrades and feel the pain of being shot and the trauma of shooting the enemy.

Then, there is the adult entertainment industry, which will utilize similar technology to bring pole dancers and escorts to our livingrooms for a close up one on one entertainment.

All this depends on vast, secure fiber optic networks.

Final thoughts.

We often tend to forget that the young generation is the generation who embraces technology. As parents, we try to stick to methods that our parents used to raise us and often we don?t allow our children to get close enough to the technology available to them. We fear the Internet and it?s dark sides and we try to limit gaming as much as we can. We introduce them to things we did as children and we wonder why they have no interest in it. Children are smart and access to modern technology only makes them smarter. Today?s child has an IQ 15-20 points higher than we did (the 40 some). New inventions are introduced to us every year and before long, somebody will develop the next big idea that everybody has been waiting for since Google and Facebook.

That invention will be Internet based and reliant on fiber optics.

I?ll put my bet on somebody under the age of 25.

Is A VA Loan Your Best Mortgage Option? | REALTOR.com? Blogs

Is A VA Loan Your Best Mortgage Option? photo

By Lauren Ratier

Before signing on the dotted line of their home loan, millions of veterans each year must decide between the VA Home Loan Program and the various other lending options available to them, including conventional loans, FHA loans and USDA loans. Here?s a look at these loan programs side by side to see their various benefits and drawbacks and which group of people is best suited for each option.

VA Loans

For active duty service members and veterans, the VA Home Loan Program offers the chance to purchase a home without a down payment and no private mortgage insurance. Through the program, lenders tend to allow lower creditworthiness ? a score of about 620 or higher ? than conventional lenders.? Although there is a funding fee that varies based on being active duty or part of the Reserves/National Guard, the loans have limits ranging from $417,000 to more than $1 million.

In addition, the interest rates tend to be competitive with or lower than conventional loans. The process for obtaining this type of loan requires a Certificate of Eligibility, finding a lender that offers this type of federally guaranteed loan and remaining in line with certain ongoing occupancy requirements even during repayment.

Ideal For: The majority of veterans and active duty service members who are able to prove eligibility.

Conventional Loans

For the average buyer, conventional loans are the most common route to homeownership. They usually come with a 5 to 20 percent down payment, as well as private mortgage insurance and various closing costs. Additionally, buyers typically must have a credit score of 680 and up to qualify for a loan. These loans lack government guarantees, such as those available in the VA Home Loan Program.

Ideal For: The average borrower who has the credit and cash to secure a loan and back it up with a significant sum for a down payment. Borrower also must be able to afford PMI and various other expenses associated with home loans.

FHA Loans

The Federal Housing Administration is similar to the Veterans Affairs Department in that it guarantees loans for qualified borrowers. However, these loans have a minimum down payment of 3.5 percent, which differs from VA home loans. Credit score requirements are not a part of these loans, meaning lenders are able to finance borrowers with scores ranging around 580. However, these borrowers still must pay an up-front mortgage insurance premium along with annual premiums.

Ideal For: Those who are low- to middle-income who are unable to qualify for no-down payment programs such as the VA Home Loan Program.

USDA Loans.

Just as the FHA and the VA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture maintains its own home loan program as part of its Rural Development Office. This is the only no-down payment loan program other the VA Home Loan Program. These loans are available to lenders with a credit score of at least 620 who are seeking to buy a home located in what the USDA considers a qualified rural area. Borrowers are not required to purchase private mortgage insurance or pay a mortgage insurance premium.

Ideal For: Veterans who live in rural areas who may or may not qualify for the VA Home Loan Program.

For veterans who meet the eligibility requirements of the VA Home Loan Program, it tends to be the best option. But due to its other restrictions and rules such as occupancy requirements and eligibility process borrowers must complete before even being able to seek a loan, prospective lenders should also consider the other options available on the market, including but not limited to those listed above.

Sharapova, Serena advance at Wimbledon

Both ladies top seed Maria Sharapova and former champion Serena Williams won 2nd round matches on Thursday to advance. On the men's side, American Andy Roddick also won.

Sharapova's old serving problems resurfaced Thursday at Wimbledon, costing her the second set before she recovered to beat dangerous Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-0.

The Court 1 match took two days and ended three minutes after Serena Williams concluded her second-round victory on Centre Court, beating qualifier Melinda Czink 6-1, 6-4.

It was a good day for Americans ? Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and No. 126-ranked Brian Baker also advanced, as did No. 28-seeded Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko.

The No. 1-ranked Sharapova saved five set points in the first set and led the second set 3-1 when play was halted Wednesday because of darkness. She lost the first two games when the match resumed, and double-faulted on her first three service points in the tiebreaker.

"It felt like two matches in a way," Sharapova said. "Today I wanted to start off really well because I knew I was up a break. Didn't go according to plan. Really served sloppy."

Sharapova underwent shoulder surgery in 2008 and has been prone to double-faults, but in the final set she had no trouble with her serve ? or anything else. She won 21 of the last 27 points and finished with just 11 unforced errors.

Sharapova said she didn't make any major changes down the stretch.

"We were playing with the same balls; I played with the same racket," she said. "I just started doing things a little bit better."

Pironkova, ranked 38th, beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon each of the past two years,

"If she played on grass 365 days a year, she'd be top five probably," Sharapova said. "She has the perfect game for it."

But Sharapova's at her best in winner-take-all sets. She improved her record in three-set matches to 9-0 this year and 21-1 since the beginning of 2011.

She has won 14 consecutive matches, including the French Open this month to complete a career Grand Slam.

While Sharapova battled an erratic serve, with eight aces and 10 double-faults, four-time champion Serena Williams had no such trouble. She won 27 of 28 points on her first serve, including 10 aces, and never faced a break point. Czink twice whiffed on returns.

"I love my serve," Williams said, "and I love feeling good when I serve."

The sixth-seeded Williams could meet Sharapova in the final next week. A 17-year-old Sharapova defeated Williams for the Wimbledon title in 2004.

Roddick advanced to the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 2012 when he beat Bjorn Phau 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Roddick is seeded only 30th and fended off questions in recent months about retirement before he won his fifth grass-court title last week as a wild card at Eastbourne.

World markets surge after Europe finds rescue plan

Financial markets around the world jumped higher Friday with the Dow Jones industrial average climbing 277 points, closing at 12,880, and the Standard & Poor's had its best day of the year. Stocks advanced even further in Europe.

Financial markets around the world stormed higher Friday after European leaders came up with a breakthrough plan to rescue banks, relieve debt-burdened governments and restore investor confidence.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 277 points, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index had its best day of the year. Stocks advanced even further in Europe, in strong and weak countries alike.

The price of oil posted its biggest one-day increase in more than three years, and other commodities shot higher ? signs of hope that a deal in Europe will remove a big barrier to a healthier world economy.

In Brussels, leaders of the 17 countries that use the euro appeared finally to have found a broad strategy to fight a debt crisis that has hounded European governments and world investors for three years.

The leaders agreed to pump money directly into stricken banks, let some countries tap into rescue money without submitting to stringent budget requirements and, later, tie European governments closer in economic union.

David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds, said it was becoming clear that European leaders will compromise to solve the crisis. One of the biggest stock gains Friday came in Germany, which took a hard line in earlier negotiations.

"The whole language is positive here," he said. "Every time they've stared over the cliff into the abyss of a euro breakup, they've realized it's much wiser to get closer together."

There was a sign immediately that Europe's latest plan was working: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow money on the bond market fell dramatically, by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

Previous market rallies tied to progress in Europe have proved temporary. But for the day, at least, global stock markets were jubilant:

? In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 277.83 points, its second-best showing this year. The S&P 500 index soared 33 points, or 2.5 percent. The rally left the S&P a gain of 8.3 percent at the halfway mark for the year.

? The benchmark stock index in Germany rose 4.3 percent, by far its best performance this year. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, and it depends heavily on exports, so it needs other countries to stay healthy.

? Stocks hit their highest level in two months in Italy and Spain, two of the countries with the shakiest finances. Stocks also neared a two-month high in Greece, another flashpoint of the debt crisis.

Traders sold U.S. Treasurys, sending the yield on the 10-year Treasury note up to 1.65 percent from 1.57 percent late Thursday, as demand decreased for ultra-safe investments and investors raised money to buy stocks.

Energy prices rose sharply because a cure for Europe's debt problem would remove a big drag on global economic growth. The price of oil jumped $7.27 per barrel to $84.96. It was a gain of 9.4 percent, the biggest for oil since March 2009.

Seven of the 17 euro countries are in recession, and unemployment in euro countries is 11 percent. But if Europe gets its economy going, it will buy more goods and services from countries in Asia and the U.S.

Gold gained $54, the biggest jump since June 1, to $1,604 an ounce. Copper and silver both rose about 5 percent. Copper is a key material for economic expansion because of its use in electrical wiring, pipes and machinery.

The euro gained 2.3 cents against the dollar, to $1.2651.

On Thursday, economic reports from the United States were discouraging, and the Dow fell as much as 177 points. But stocks staged a big comeback late in the day and closed down modestly, partly because rumors swirled that European leaders were more conciliatory.

News of the deal in Europe broke overnight, and on Friday, stocks soared from the open. The Dow swung 430 points between its Thursday low and the high it reached late Friday.

Some market analysts remained cautious. Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners LLC, a New York hedge fund, said he expects more sharp leaps and dives this summer as traders speculate about Europe's future.

"This Europe thing is going to trade up and down based on the news of the day," Landesman said.

Kelly took a brighter view. Besides the Europe deal, he referred to a Greek election this month won by parties that support a European bailout, and the Supreme Court's decision Thursday to uphold most of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

"Uncertainty is diminishing," he said. "These are all big question marks that have been out there, and as those question marks decrease, stock prices and interest rates increase."

As the first half of the year ends, there are still reasons to worry about the world economy: China's expansion is slowing, and U.S. employers have created far fewer jobs in March, April and May than the three months before. A report next Friday is expected to show another month of anemic U.S. job growth.

Because of the economic fears and a deep slump in May as Spain's banks teetered near collapse, the S&P 500 lost 3.3 percent for the quarter. But the S&P started the summer strong. It rose 4 percent in June, its best month since February and its strongest June since 1999.

For the year, the Dow is up 662.53 points, or 5.4 percent. The Nasdaq composite index is up 12.7 percent.

For the day, the Dow closed up 277.83 points, or 2.2 percent, at 12,880.09. The S&P 500 rose 33.12, or 2.5 percent, to 1,362.16. The Nasdaq rose 85.56, or 3 percent, to 2,935.05.

Industrial and information technology stocks rose the most of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500. Those companies would benefit from faster growth and stronger demand from Europe, a key trading partner.

In corporate news, Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, plunged $1.92, or 20.3 percent, to $7.54 after the company posted quarterly results that suggest it is crumbling faster than thought. RIM is cutting 5,000 jobs and unexpectedly delaying the launch of new phones deemed critical to its survival.

The biggest gainer in the S&P was the alcoholic beverage giant Constellation Brands. The stock jumped 24.4 percent, or $5.30, to $27.06. Constellation is buying the 50 percent of Crown Imports LLC that it doesn't already own from Anheuser-Busch for $1.85 billion, giving it more U.S. control over Corona beers and other breweries.

Nike plunged $9.11, or 9.4 percent, to $87.78, the biggest drop in the S&P 500. The world's largest athletic shoe and clothing company said profit dropped 8 percent last quarter on high product costs, a restructuring charge and an unexpected customs assessment.

Google brings increased functionality to voice search with Jelly Bean

Voice Search

Google is showing us a demo of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and one of the many improvements includes much improved voice search features. We all know how Apple has been promoting Siri to no end and this looks like a serious competitor.

The improved voice search includes functionality from their knowledge graph. For example, the presenter asked who the Prime Minister of Japan was, the phone brought up Wikipedia and read who the Prime Minister is. He asked for pictures of marmosets and it brought up pictures of the funny looking creature. Impressive stuff and we'll look to have a demo of it for you when we can.

New screening test to help people with hearing loss in China

New screening test to help people with hearing loss in China [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Jun-2012

University of Southampton

The University of Southampton has developed a new hearing screening test which could help the estimated 100 million people suffering from hearing loss in China.

This new Chinese version is based on a hearing screening test developed by the University's Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), which has already been taken by more than a million people across Europe.

The tests aim to address the fact that hundreds of millions of people worldwide have hearing loss but only a fraction obtain hearing aids that would help them to overcome hearing difficulties. The percentage of people with hearing loss using hearing aids has been estimated to be only 16 per cent in Europe, while the figure is as low as 1 per cent in China.

The availability of a telephone-based test enables individuals to obtain an objective assessment of their hearing ability and hence guidance on whether they should seek professional assistance. The tests developed at ISVR are based on listening to triple digit presentations, such as "2-5-9", against a background of noise and then pressing the corresponding numbers on the telephone keypad.

Correct responses lead to the noise level increasing, thereby making the test more difficult, while mistakes lead to the noise level deceasing, making the test easier. The overall test measures the highest noise level that is compatible with correct responses. Performance on the test reflects the main difficulty experienced in everyday life by people with a hearing loss, which is understanding what people are saying in a background of noise.

The test was developed by Professor Mark Lutman and Dr Guoping Li of the ISVR. Dr Li says: "This project will have a massive social impact in China. There are at least 100 million adults who are hearing impaired and this is the first adult hearing screening test via telephone made available in China."

Professor Lutman adds: "It is expected that widespread use of these tests in China will increase awareness of hearing problems and the availability of solutions, thereby reducing the social, health and economic burdens of hearing loss in the enormous population of China. These burdens will increase as the population distribution becomes older unless something is done to mitigate the effects of hearing loss."

The original test developed by Professor Lutman in ISVR was in English and was implemented by the Royal National Institute for Deaf people, RNID (now re-named Action on Hearing Loss) in 2005. Subsequent tests were developed in Swiss-German and Welsh.

This most recent test in Mandarin Chinese is sponsored by Beijing Telecom, Huawei and Tongren Hospital. A corresponding test for use over the Internet is also being prepared.

How To Cut Your Grocery Costs By 10% or more - Debt Consolidation

by Kirk Carlson on June 25, 2012

Woman with groceries and register tapeIt seems to us that our grocery bill gets higher every month. There are only three of us but were probably spending better than $600 a month on ?groceries.?

The reason I put the word groceries? in quotes is because what a lot of people don?t think about is how much of our grocery bills are nonfood items. In our case, there may be only 2 adults and one child in the house but there are also three dogs that consume a total of 14 cans of dog food a week. If we were to subtract that from our $600 grocery bill, we would probably find it?s actually much closer to $550 a month. And if we subtracted everything we spend on laundry detergents, shampoos and other health and beauty products, our true grocery bill would probably be less than $400 a month.

Become a coupon junkie

The surest way to cut your grocery bill is by using as many coupons as you can get your hands on. We?ve seen many coupons that can save you as much as $.50 or even $1.00 on items that you would buy anyway. If you have a computer you can go online and find printable coupons from the stores where you shop (such as Kroger?s or Target) or from sites like The Coupon Clippers (the couponclippers.com) where you can buy coupons in bulk. For example, if you have a baby and use a lot of diapers you could buy 10 coupons and save nearly $10 on your next 10 purchases.

Make it a game

Some families actually make a game out of coupons and give a prize to the family member who finds the best or most coupons a week. Don?t think for a minute that it?s not worth using coupons and save just $.50 on an item as this can eventually grow into a much larger amount than you might imagine. We know families who are saving as much as $20 a week simply by using coupons.

Plan your menus around the ?specials?

Look for coupons or BOGOs (buy one, get one) on food items that you can plan menus around. As an example of this, if you find an especially good price on chicken or pork, plan a meal around these meats. You can surround the chicken or pork with vegetables that are on sale (or have coupons) and put together a nice meal for $7 or less?and feed a family of four.

Make a list and stick to it

One of the biggest mistakes people make in grocery shopping is to do it without a list. While you might think that you can just go to the store and choose the items you will need for the following three or five days, I can promise one of two things will happen. You will either forget five or six important items, which will mean yet another trip to the store. Or you will end up buying a lot of ?impulse? items. It?s really important to figure out your menus for the next few days, make a list of all the items you will need to fix those meals and then never deviate from your list.

Never shop before a meal

Oh, and one other thing. Never go grocery shopping before you eat lunch or dinner. Statistics show that the hungrier you are when you go grocery shopping, the higher your grocery bill will be. And that?s a fact.

Health benefits milk

Because of its high fat content, milk consumption and benefits also brings some problems. For example, regular whole milk is not a healthy choice, like having a diet high in fat. The milk becomes more appealing and healthy relationship between people once discovered that manufacturers the ability to remove the fat content.

The negative effects of whole milk is completely eliminated with the removal of fat. People then became interested more in the consumption of skim milk, with only 1% or 2% fat. Milk is a highly nutritious food when the grease is left on one side, and thus the benefits of milk for health are numerous.

One of the great benefits of milk is used to prevent osteoporosis, stroke and hypertension. Milk also produces a substance that reduces the hepatic production of cholesterol.

While fruits and vegetables were the staple of most diets to fight cancer, the benefits of milk can be very efficient in the fight against cancer. Studies have shown that most consumers of skim milk has less chance that the cancer develops.

Milk is rich in calcium and vitamin d. Calcium helps build strong bones, but can not be absorbed into the bones to strengthen them without the presence of vitamin d. In previous studies, a large amount of calcium has been shown to reduce blood pressure, and higher levels of calcium can help you lose weight.

Milk contains a large number of proteins that are essential for better nutrition. Protein provides energy and helps a person to feel recharged for longer, also helps in weight loss.

Consumption of milk on a regular basis can also help reduce the risk of kidney stones. It also serves to clear the mouth of sucroses substances when someone is drunk, likewise can be of great help in fighting tooth decay. Milk also strengthens the enamel of the teeth using a function remineralizarte.

Other studies have shown that women who drink milk, adolescents and young adults have stronger bones, in the case of women it shows greatly when menopause arrives.

Milk is one of the great health food for the brain, reducing the risk of stroke. Scientists have not been able to figure out why milk is used to combat these diseases, they believe it is because of the many nutrients it contains and who can work together as a protective shield.

To maximize the benefits of milk, make sure it is properly stored, preferably under cold for better preservation of food and nutrients. Milk should always be bought in a carton or plastic container. The translucent plastic containers allow light to enter and destroy valuable nutritional content of milk.

Toshiba Excite 13 review a bigscreened tablet with a price to match

Well, this lede pretty much wrote itself. A 13-inch tablet, seriously? Toshiba is pushing the form factor limits with the Excite 13, and while its dimensions make it stand out in a sea of 7- and 10-inch devices, that isn't necessarily what tablet buyers are looking for.

There's no shortage of skepticism about such a large slate -- "slab" seems appropriate here -- so the Toshiba Excite 13 needs to provide an exceptional experience, with a brilliant display and smooth graphics, to make 2.2 pounds seem more palatable. On paper, its specs are promising: there's a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under the hood, a 1600 x 900 display at 138 ppi and a clean build of Android 4.0. The company already has the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 in its arsenal, and their good performance and bright displays make for compelling tablets. But how does a 13-inch tablet that starts at $650 round out that trio? Read on for our full impressions.

You can sleep in Pamela Anderson's bedroom for $50K

By Laura Vescey, Zillow

?

Zillow

Pamela Anderson's Malibu home features an enormous outdoor deck.

Pamela Anderson has not only traded her signature red swimsuit from her "Baywatch" days, she's apparently trading in her Malibu digs, too.

The blonde bombshell and mother of two has put her teak-sided beach house up for rent, hoping to fetch $50,000 a month for the remodeled home one block from the Pacific. The house is located at 23445 Malibu Colony Road, putting the lucky renter within striking distance of all things Malibu -- the epitome of southern California celebrity beach living.

According to property records, Anderson purchased the 1959 house in 2000 for $1.8 million. And according to The Real Estalker, Anderson hit some choppy financial waters in 2009, when she was embroiled in a remodel and was sued by contractors seeking payment. Anderson said her failure to pay wasn't due to lack of funds, but because she disputed the veracity of the billing.

These days, Anderson can be found in far-flung places like Switzerland, where she recently attended the International Art Show in Basel. She also claims to be spending time in her native Canada these days. Because of that, it makes sense to try and turn some profit on the serene Malibu house, which features 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms in 2,700 square feet.

Wieters' 2-run HR in 8th lifts Orioles

By DAVID GINSBURG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:40 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to interrupt Baltimore's agonizing offensive struggle, and the Orioles rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 Sunday in a duel between neighboring rivals.

Baltimore appeared headed for its third shutout loss in six games before Adam Jones led off the eighth with a single off Sean Burnett (0-1) and Wieters drove an 0-1 pitch over the center-field wall.

Prior to the home run, the Orioles had wasted several scoring opportunities and stranded eight runners over seven innings. Baltimore scored only five runs in the series and went 1 for 16 with runners in scoring position, yet still managed to win two of three.

The Orioles finished 11-7 in interleague play and won five of six series.

Pedro Strop (4-2) got the final out in the eighth for Baltimore and Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his 22nd save. The game ended when Johnson struck out Danny Espinosa and Wieters threw out Ian Desmond attempting to steal second.

Ryan Zimmerman had the lone RBI for the Nationals, who scored five runs in the series. Washington was 34-2 when leading after seven innings.

Making his first start for the Nationals since May 25, Ross Detwiler allowed four hits and walked two in five scoreless innings. In his previous start against Baltimore on May 19, the left-hander gave up six runs. But that was at a point in the season when the Orioles scored 32 runs over a six-game span.

Jake Arrieta gave up one run and five hits in six innings, and it still took an unlikely comeback by the Orioles for him to avoid becoming the first 10-game loser in the big leagues this season.

Zimmerman snapped a 5-for-49 slump and gave Washington a 1-0 third-inning lead with a two-out single that scored Jhonatan Solano.

Detwiler retired the first seven batters he faced and was cruising until the fourth, when Baltimore loaded the bases with two outs. Ronny Paulino hit a harmless fly ball to end the threat.

In the Orioles fifth, two singles and a groundout put runners on second and third with two outs for Jones, who hit a fly ball to deep left.

Bryce Harper led off the Washington sixth by turning a bouncer up the middle into a dash-for-second double, but Arrieta worked out of trouble by getting Desmond to hit a two-out popup.

Baltimore's frustration continued in the seventh, when J.J. Hardy grounded out with runners on second and third and two outs.

NOTES: After taking Monday off, the Orioles open a two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. LHP Dana Eveland likely will begin paternity leave on that day, and it's possible that RHP Matt Lindstrom (finger) will be activated from the disabled list to fill out the Baltimore roster. ... On Monday night in Colorado, Washington RHP Stephen Strasburg vies to become the first player in Nationals history to win seven consecutive starts. ... Nationals closer Drew Storen, who had elbow surgery in April, said he expects to throw batting practice Monday and hopes to make his season debut next weekend in Atlanta. "Just a matter of getting that last 10 percent," the right-hander said. ... Held out of the starting lineup in part because of an 0-for-28 slump, Baltimore's Chris Davis flied out as a pinch hitter. ... The Orioles have gone 17 straight games without a stolen base, their longest such streak since a 20-game run in June 1962.

Parents Fire Back At K-12 Education System Implementing More ...

More parents are pulling their kids from ?traditional? K-college public school system, finally standing up to a system NOT preparing kids and leaving kids/parents in heavy debt.

?Dear Mike, my husband and I read your latest comments on K-12 education. We agree wholeheartedly. Regularly, we read and enjoy your detailed comments and articles on K-12 education. Education is very important to us. We have 3 kids, ages 8, 10 & 13. Unfortunately, we are disappointed in our local school.? To be clear, we don?t blame teachers. Our kids have caring teachers. We are so frustrated with a curriculum that emphasizes testing and memorization. We too join other concerned parents who want our kids to develop a passion for learning.? ?Brent & Cally M, Sarasota, FL

sarasota county schools Parents Fire Back At K 12 Education System Implementing More Testing, More Rote & Regurgitation & LESS Learning

***What you see below is the long response I provided to a father of 2 boys, who indicated his wife and he are researching education alternatives for their high-school-aged son.***

This father repeats a common (and serious) concern ? today?s education policy makers mandate:

  1. Rote & regurgitation (aka ?drill & kill?)
  2. More (not less) TESTING
  3. Memorization ? that is,? very little emphasis on higher-order thinking skills (aka ?Bloom?s Taxonomy)
  4. Traditional curriculum that ignores kids? passions ? kids are bored out of their minds

Click READ MORE below now for my long response to a parent who searches for an alternative educational experience for his high-school-aged son.

WHEN TRADITIONAL K-12 SYSTEM FAILS KIDS AND PARENTS

In response to this parent, I shared the following in support of his wife?s and his decision to search for best alternative education experience for their son:

?Obviously, Tom, you know your son is not alone?nor is this ?point of contention? reserved just for your wife and you. LOTS of young people are bored out of their heads and LOTS of parents are frustrated out of their heads.

Bottom line: you can force your son to comply with traditional standards and perform to your expectations or you can search alternative education. I prefer searching for alternative education. In fact, this topic is the exact core issue that drove me out of teaching in 2002.

In mid 90s, I was part of a state delegation tasked with ?New Standards.? We were fed a line about being the pioneers who would form new (and exciting) standards allowing kids to compete globally. Sounded so damn noble.

Problem is, EVERYONE sees today exactly what is happening in K-12 education: it?s now standardized testing up the ass with corporations led by ?education reformer? Jeb Bush banging down school doors on behalf of his corporate bed-buddies in order to grab more MILLIONS in profits, i.e. more testing, more test scoring, more test prep, more test remediation, more test training, etc.

More testing is BIG $$$$$$ and the public is eating this shit up because the public (even most parents) swallowed a handful of *BLUE pills convincing them their kids have to work hard, get good grades, beat all standardized tests, get accepted to ABC Good College, grab a piece of sheepskin & live happily ever after.

*Editor?s Note: This is reference to the movie, The Matrix.

All the while kids? EXCITEMENT for learning is being stomped out, replaced with ROTE & REGURGITATION. In fact, let me challenge every parent among us: invest one week scrutinizing your kid?s (or kids?) homework.

You will be shocked to discover ~90 or more percent is frickin? rote, where they?re expected to regurgitate.WHY? Teachers? asses are on the line to TEACH to these damn tests. Government has convinced you teachers are bad and that good teachers should earn merit pay when their students perform well on these tests.

Guess what? The savvy teachers have realized they?ll sacrifice principles in order to stay off a ?bad teacher? list so their curricula has transitioned to focus on the tests.

Your (and my) kids are suffering?THEY are the victims.

Tom, what is happening to your son is NOT his fault. I?m not appeasing you ? I was IN THOSE CLASSROOMS for 16 years. No one EVER will convince me otherwise. I will stand up to millions as a lone ranger (though I?m not alone in blowing the whistle). Problem is, too many parents swallowed that handful of *blue pills ? they?re now hopeless pawns.

*Editor?s Note: This is reference to the movie, The Matrix.

So, Tom, what is a possible solution for your wife, you and son to consider? I think you already intuitively have come to the solution: you find out what your son?s passion? is. Even if he can?t make a living from his passion (perhaps at this time), he will mature, develop his learning skills & probably sneak in a bunch of math, science, reading, writing, history, et al without even realizing it. icon wink Parents Fire Back At K 12 Education System Implementing More Testing, More Rote & Regurgitation & LESS Learning
