Arroz con pollo with Mazola? Bouillon Packets

Recently, I switched bouillon products because I no longer wanted to support a certain brand, so when I had the chance to try Mazola? Sobrecitos?, I was excited to see what they have to offer. ?Of course, the first thing that I thought of to cook was pollo arroz. ?My suegra makes a really delicious saffron rice, but I didn?t have any saffron at the moment, so I thought, why not go Puerto Rican style? ?When I was in college, a professor of mine invited me over for a few family parties and her pollo arroz was always my favorite. ?There were so many great dishes that I can?t quite name now, but pollo arroz has always stuck with me. ?Maybe because it?s also something we ate a lot with my hubby?s family?the main difference between Puerto Rican and Mexican pollo arroz being the olives and sometimes legumes or peas.

I even thought about adding garbanzos to the recipe, just to add a little Mexican flare, but I decided to wait and keep it more traditional this time around. ?Next time we?ll have our chickpeas though?lol. ?;)

Pollo arroz is a pretty simple recipe, and I made it even simpler by doing it all in the?crock pot. ?One thing I remembered about Sra. Perez? house?she always had a plethora of?crock pots?and they are a virtual necessity for every working mother. ?Since my wedding day, when we received our first crock pot, I?ve cooked in it more times than I can count and it?s continually been a lifesaver.

Below, you can see the pollo arroz stewing in the crock pot. ?Chicken, rice, tomatoes, onions, olives, seasonings, olive oil, etc.

Mazola Packet Chicken Flavor Bouillon The nice thing about using Mazola is the fact that their serving packets come in just the right size for a ?one-pot-wonder? kind of meal.

One packet counts as one cube, and like the cubes, salt is already included. ?In the case of Mazola though, they?ve included sea salt, a favorite in our house. ?It?s also nice that you don?t have to constantly stir and check, waiting for cubes to?dissolve. ?Mazola comes in a power form, much like a seasoning salt or other bouillon alternative.

Mazola Sobrecitos Logo, pollo arroz recipe, puerto rican, mexican style, olives, chicken bouillon In case you?re wondering, the final recipe came out pretty darn good, although I can?t say I wasn?t still craving a little saffron. ;) ?Gotta remember that next time! Here?s the recipe for our crock pot pollo arroz, altered to include Mazola? Sobrecitos? chicken bouillon packets.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of long grain white rice
  • 1 whole chicken or 3-4 chicken breasts, cut into pieces
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 large ripe tomatoes, cut into large pieces
  • 1/2 to 1 cup pimiento-stuffed?olives, depending on your preference
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder or 3-4 fresh garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 2 packets of Mazola? Sobrecitos? Chicken Flavor Bouillon
  • 1 packet of?Mazola? Sobrecitos? Tomato Flavor Bouillon

Directions

In a large crock pot, add all of your ingredients, except the rice, incorporating them one by one. ?Bring to a boil, stirring frequently and once boiling, add in the rice. ?Cook on high heat until the liquid is absorbed into the rice, about an hour, depending on temperature. ?After this point, stir the rice gently and turn down the temperature to medium heat. ?Continue cooking about 20 more minutes, until the rice is tender, but firm.

Garnish with fresh cilantro, tomatoes or even pico de gallo. ?Enjoy!

Time to refinance your mortgage? Rates hit historic lows.

Mortgage interest rates are at their lowest point since records have been kept. Last week, some 81 percent of the loans made were refinancings, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Since the beginning of this month, just before the Federal Reserve said it would try to stimulate the economy in part with large purchases of mortgage-backed securities, interest rates for home loans have fallen every week. This has prompted many homeowners to run to their lenders to try to refinance.

?We?re at a very robust level of activity,? says Mike Fratantoni, vice president of research at the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) in Washington. ?We are back up to a three-year high in the level of refinance applications.?

The interest rate on a 30-year, fixed-rate conforming mortgage (under $417,500) dipped to 3.63 percent last week, compared with 3.78 percent at the end of August, the MBA said Wednesday. For jumbo loans (more than $417,500), interest rates fell a comparable amount and are now at 3.87 percent.

The last time refinance activity was this high was in early 2009, when interest rates fell even faster. Back then, mortgage rates dropped from 5.5 to 5 percent.

However, new home buyers and people moving up to larger homes are not entering the market in large numbers, says Mr. Fratantoni.

?People are still looking at the 8.1 percent unemployment rate, and they still don?t feel a level of stability in the economy,? he says.

If interest rates were to continue to fall, they could help create jobs, says economist Mark Zandi of Moody?s Analytics in West Chester, Pa. A sustained decline of half a point in fixed mortgage rates would add just under a quarter of a percentage point to real GDP growth in the subsequent year, he estimates.

?This translates into about 175,000 jobs and lowers unemployment? by about one-tenth of a percentage point, he writes in an e-mail. ?This is a meaningful boost to the economy, but it?s not enough to solve what ails the economy.?

For those who qualify, the savings from a refinancing can be helpful in freeing up money to buy other things or pay off other loans. A homeowner with a $200,000, 30-year, fixed-rate loan would save about $55 a month if he or she went from a 4 percent mortgage to a 3.5 percent mortgage, Fratantoni says.

?There are people who have refinanced three times starting at 5 percent and are now down to 3.5 percent, and that is a significant monthly savings,? he says.

According to the MBA, some 81 percent of the loans made last week were refinancings. That is close to the all-time record of 85 percent in January 2009.

?I?m telling my clients that if you are thinking of refinancing, this is as good a time as any,? says David Shucavage, president of Carolina Estate Planners in Wilmington, N.C. ?It?s such cheap money that 10 years from now, you will be happily telling your grandchildren you borrowed money at 3.63 percent.?

Factoring in the inflation rate, which is about 2 percent annualized, mortgage rates seem extremely low. For example, the 15-year, fixed-rate loan is down to 2.98 percent. ?The real interest rate on this loan is about 1 percent,? says Ann Owen, a professor at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., and a former economist at the Federal Reserve.

?Obviously, there is a limit to how far mortgage rates can fall,? she adds.

One factor that could make home borrowing rates rise would be a much greater demand for housing and mortgages, Ms. Owen says. ?Most likely that would coincide with the Fed pulling back, since it would be a sign the economy is picking up,? she says. ?But the housing market is in such bad shape that it has a long way to go before it?s in full recovery.?

Sales of new single-family homes fell 0.3 percent in August compared with July, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. At the same time, compared with a year ago, the median price of a new home rose 17 percent, the largest rise since December 2004, when the housing market was bubbling.

Other recent data also show gains, with new home starts up 29 percent compared with a year ago and permits up 24 percent compared with last year.

In Wilmington, Mr. Shucavage says, housing starts jumped two months ago. ?We?re back to the same level we were in 2007,? he says. ?We have seen a distinct uptick in new housing applications. Mortgage rates must have something to do with that.?

Although mortgage rates are low, not everyone will qualify for refinancing, Owen points out. ?There is still evidence credit standards are pretty tight,? she says.

About 20 percent of the refinancings involve people whose homes are worth less than their mortgages. They have qualified for the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), a government program run through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. These individuals have a good credit record, a Fannie or Freddie loan, and a job. ?If you have weaker credit, it is much tougher to qualify,? says Fratantoni.

Mexico nabs high-ranking cartel member 'El Taliban'

By Reuters

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican navy said on Wednesday it had captured one of the leaders of the Zetas drug cartel, a notoriously brutal gang reported to be breaking apart due to an internal feud.

The navy said it had caught the man it believed to be Zetas boss Ivan Velazquez in the central state of San Luis Potosi, in a boost to outgoing President Felipe Calderon's efforts to crack down on the violent cartels.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

The Zetas have perpetrated some of the most sickening acts of Mexico's drug war and continued to expand even as rival gangs joined forces against them. They are now regarded as one of the two most powerful drug cartels in the country.

Velazquez is due to be paraded before the media on Thursday morning as is customary with such captures in Mexico.

132 inmates tunnel out of Mexico prison near US border

The suspected gang leader surrendered to the navy in the city of San Luis Potosi without a shot being fired, an eyewitness told Reuters.

Known as "Z-50" or "El Taliban," Velazquez has been one of the leading figures in the Zetas. Formed by a group of army deserters in the late 1990s, the gang acted as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel before splitting with their employers in 2010.

Longstanding rivalry between the Zetas' top leader, Heriberto Lazcano, and his second-in-command Miguel Trevino has exploded into violence, raising fears the hostilities could bring a fresh wave of bloodletting.

President: Mexico gang-related deaths fall by 15 percent in 2012

Switched allegiance
The Zetas boast 10,000-plus gunmen, and the prospect of them fighting for control of local trafficking networks and smuggling routes has alarmed security experts.

However, the split also brings benefits for the government, as members of the gang inform against former colleagues.

A video "mockumentary" that shows children as kidnappers, corrupt cops and drug traffickers sparked a fierce debate in violence-torn Mexico. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Earlier this week, Mexican news magazine Proceso reported that Velazquez had switched his allegiance to the Gulf Cartel due to a rupture with Trevino, citing messages posted online.

Velazquez is listed by the government as one of the country's most-wanted drug kingpins. The Mexican government has offered a reward of up to 30 million pesos ($2.34 million) for information leading to his arrest.

Debate rages over Mexico 'spillover violence' in US

Since 2009, more than 20 drug lords have been caught or killed. The most recent capture came two weeks ago, when the navy arrested Gulf Cartel head Jorge Costilla, alias "El Coss."

Earlier on Wednesday, the navy announced the capture of 18 suspected Zetas in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.

Mexico's drug war: No sign of 'light at the end of the tunnel'

How to contain the threat posed by the drug gangs is one of the main challenges facing Calderon's successor Enrique Pena Nieto, who is due to take office on December 1.

About 60,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence during Calderon's six-year term.

Lemon Pie, a dog whose two front legs were allegedly cut off by a gang in Mexico, got prosthetic legs after more than $8,000 was raised for him.

'Moon River' crooner Andy Williams dies at age 84

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) ? For the older ? OK, squarer ? side of the generation gap, Andy Williams was part of the soundtrack of the 1960s and '70s, with easy-listening hits like "Moon River," the "Love Story" theme and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from his beloved Christmas TV specials.

The singer known for his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," Williams once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred ? not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."

The 84-year-old entertainer, who died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with bladder cancer, outlasted many of the decade's rock stars and fellow crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s and continued to perform into his 80s.

Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records, three platinum and five Grammy award nominations.

Williams was also the first host of the live Grammy awards telecast and hosted the show for seven consecutive years, beginning in 1971.

Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the cherished 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.

"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."

At a Wednesday matinee at Williams' Moon River Theatre in Branson, a performer told the crowd that Williams would have wanted the show to go on, and it did. The first show after his death included a moving video of him performing "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."

"It was very emotional, very sad," said Barbara Cox of Atlanta, who came to Branson on vacation. "We've lost a great man."

Because of illness, Williams had not performed in several months.

He had been a constant presence on television with "The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971. It won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering with guest stars.

It was on that show that Williams ? who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet ? introduced the world to another clean-cut act ? the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.

Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.

For many families, Williams and his music were a holiday tradition. His annual Christmas specials continued long after his show ended, featuring Williams dressed in colorful sweaters singing favorites that almost always included "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," a song written for Williams that became a holiday standard.

Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.

"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines."

His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude.

In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said the slaying was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.

Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.

He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927, and began performing with older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.

When Andy was 8, Williams' father arranged for the kids to have an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down but kept returning until they were finally accepted. The show attracted attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."

The brothers later worked with Kay Thompson, a singer who eventually became famous for the "Eloise" children's books. She had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas, drawing rave reviews and as much as $25,000 a week.

After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.

Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.

A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.

Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Barack Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon and in 1968 was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign.

When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.

"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice, but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."

After giving up touring, he settled in Branson, with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts, and was among the first wave of national entertainers to perform there regularly.

When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music, but Williams changed that with his classy, $13 million theater in the heart of the entertainment district, where he did two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he cut back to one show a night. His most popular time was Christmas.

Not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest. "The fact is most of my friends in LA still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.

He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, Calif., where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.

Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."

Williams is survived by his wife and his three children.

Investors run to gold after Fed promises action

NEW YORK (AP) ? Prices for gold and silver jumped Thursday after the Federal Reserve said it would take aggressive steps to try to spur the U.S. economy.

Gold and silver, which had traded flat to slightly down throughout the morning, shot up after the Fed released its decision at 12:30 p.m. EDT. Gold finished more than 2 percent higher. Silver jumped more than 4 percent.

Investors often put their money into gold when the Fed gets more involved in the economy. Fed actions carry the risk of causing inflation. Some investors view gold as a way to protect themselves from rising prices.

Gold for December delivery jumped $38.40 to $1,772.10 per ounce. December silver jumped $1.486 to $34.778 per ounce.

Some wondered how long the increase would last. Both gold and silver have been rising since the start of August, because investors were already expecting the Fed to take action.

"We suspect that the uptick could morph quickly into a light round of profit-taking, since much of the Fed move is already baked into prices," Edward Meir of INTL FCStone wrote in a note to clients.

The moves in gold and silver also boosted other key metals.

December copper rose 1.75 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $3.71 per pound.

December palladium rose $9.70, or 1.4 percent, to $689 per ounce. October platinum rose $29.90, or 1.8 percent, to $1,679.50 per ounce.

Platinum prices, which had the biggest move, have been rising for the past month because of violent strikes at mines in South Africa.

The Fed's move also pushed up the price of oil, but couldn't propel other energy products.

In New York, benchmark crude rose $1.30 to $98.31 per barrel, its first close above $98 in more than four months. Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 55 cents to $115.88 per barrel in London.

Wholesale gasoline fell 4 cents to $2.96 a gallon. Natural gas lost 3 cents at $3.04 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil fell less than a penny to close at $3.21 a gallon.

Prices for key crops were up slightly. December wheat jumped 12 cents to $9.02 per bushel. December corn rose 4.25 cents to $7.7375 per bushel. November soybeans were virtually flat, rising 1.5 cents to $17.472 per bushel.

Take a Risk and Claim Your Authenticity, Part 1 ? Empowering Your ...

by Linda-Ann Stewart

Many years ago, I was a member of a group that promoted and encouraged creative writing in the community. We?d been working together for a couple of years when a new member joined us. She came in with a host of ideas, many of which we?d already tried, with no success. Even after we explained that, she insisted on our implementing them anyway.

No one challenged her and said, ?No, that didn?t work the first time and we?re not going to do it again.? I decided someone had to draw the line, and although I expected censure from the rest of the group, I stood up to her and said, ?No.? It got a little heated.

After the meeting, I was surprised and amazed when the other members thanked me for standing firm. ?Someone had to do it,? they said. This was the opposite reaction that I?d learned to expect, based on my childhood experiences. In my youth, if I set a boundary or challenged someone, I was ostracized. The members? appreciation rocked my worldview. It altered even more when the new member called me and kept trying to change my mind. And that, from then on, she respected me.

When you risk stepping out of your comfort zone, you find a deeper level of self-commitment and self-acceptance. By being true to yourself, you give yourself the message that your opinions and values are important. This buoys up your self-concept and increases your self-respect, which in turn gives you a greater feeling of confidence. It encourages you to open up and be more authentic.

I felt the new member had to be stopped from taking us down a fruitless path, so I acted on what I thought was right. By following my values, I fed my self-respect and felt like I?d accomplished something. When I stepped out of my comfort zone, I found approval when I expected displeasure.

The same thing can be said for trying new things. Making the choice to risk trying something you haven?t done before, whether you?re good at it or not, opens your mind to new experiences and possibilities. You don?t have to be good at it, you just have to try. And if you don?t explore new activities or pursuits, you won?t find hidden treasures that make your heart sing.

This is the way children learn. They try, fail, and try again. When they?re learning to walk, playing with building blocks, or making a sand castle, they don?t get discouraged if it doesn?t work out initially. Exploring and experimentation allows them to expand their awareness and discover what works and what doesn?t. Children are persistent and keep trying, even it they don?t succeed the first time. They?re authentic and their confidence grows as they try again and achieve their goal.

UN faults 16 gov'ts for reprisals against critics

GENEVA (AP) ? The United Nations has singled out 16 nations for cracking down on critics, saying most of those countries' governments are going unpunished for their acts of reprisal.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told a special session of the Human Rights Council that the 16 nations detailed in a new report "have been far from sufficient" in preventing members of their own governments from resorting to intimidation and attacks on various activists.

"Reprisals and intimidation against individuals continue to be reported," she told the 47-nation council. "People may be threatened or harassed by government officials, including through public statements by high-level authorities. Associations and NGOs may see their activities monitored or restricted. Smear campaigns against those who cooperate with the U.N. may be organized. Threats may be made via phone calls, text messages or even direct contacts. People may also be arrested, beaten or tortured and even killed."

Pillay said there also has been a "lack of accountability in relation to the majority of reported cases of reprisals."

The report to the Geneva-based council for its session this month details alleged cases of killings, beatings, torture, arrests, threats, harassment and smear campaigns against human rights defenders, some arising out of backlash from the Arab Spring last year. The report covers mid-June 2011 to mid-July 2012 and cites cases in Algeria, Bahrain, Belarus, China, Colombia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

One activist, Mohammed Al-Maskati, told the council Thursday that as president of the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights he had "received more than a dozen anonymous phone calls threatening my life and the safety of my family" during the previous three days because he tweeted that he would be attending the council session.

Bahrain's human rights minister, Dr. Salah Bin Ali Abdulrahman, told The Associated Press that "we are serious about issues related to human rights principles" and that any reported allegations of such abuses are investigated.

"It's important for us, if there are any reprisals or violations happening to anybody, individuals or citizens, we have a full judicial system, fully independent," said Abdulrahman, who is a family practice medical doctor, adding that activists are raising the issues more outside the country than within it. "If anybody is being violated or threatened, they should report that in Bahrain."

Pillay urged the council ? and the world's nations ? to do more.

"We need more coherent and solid strategies to put an end to reprisals," she said. "Reprisals are not only unacceptable: they are also ineffective in the long term. Preventing people from expressing their will or their dissent freely, does not succeed. Ultimately, freedom will always prevail. And information will always find its way to the outside word."

Little Ice Age led to migration of island hopping arctic foxes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? The Little Ice Age allowed a new wave of arctic foxes to colonise Iceland, according to new research.

A "bridge" of sea ice appeared during a dip in temperatures between 200 to 500 years ago allowing arctic foxes to migrate to Iceland from different Arctic regions including Russia, North America and Greenland.

The researchers, led by scientists at Durham University, UK, said their findings showed the importance of sea ice in creating and maintaining the genetic population of the arctic fox across the polar regions where the animal is found.

The multi-disciplinary approach used for this project could also be used to track the migration of other animals found on remote islands, the researchers said.

While Iceland's approximately 10,000 strong arctic fox population is not at risk, the researchers added that increasing isolation from the rest of the Arctic, caused by warmer temperatures and a lack of sea ice, could further differentiate the island's population from their mainland relatives.

Ancient arctic foxes also crossed sea ice during previous ice ages to reach Iceland well before human settlement in the 9th Century. Warmer temperatures then melted the sea ice and isolated the ancient foxes on the island before the Little Ice Age reconnected Iceland to the mainland.

The Little Ice Age saw temperatures plummet in the 16th to 19th Centuries across large parts of Europe and North America in particular, and rivers such as the Thames were frequently frozen enough to support ice skating and winter festivals.

The researchers analysed DNA samples from ancient remains of Icelandic arctic foxes dating from two late 9th to 12th Century archaeological sites and compared the findings to DNA data from their modern successors.

They found that the ancient foxes shared a single genetic signature, while the modern population possesses five unique signatures.

The researchers were able to rule out different explanations for the increase in the amount of variation of the ancient foxes, including geographic reasons and breeding between farmed and wild arctic foxes.

The team concluded that the most likely explanation for the boom in genetic diversity among arctic foxes was migration across sea ice that formed during the Little Ice Age.

The research, partly funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B -- Biological Sciences.

Senior author Dr Greger Larson, in Durham University's Department of Archaeology, said: "During the Little Ice Age there was a great deal more sea ice in the North Atlantic than there is today and during the late 18th and 19th centuries sea ice routinely grounded on Iceland.

"Even today arctic foxes routinely travel hundreds of miles across sea ice and once the ice bridge was in place, they easily crossed the North Atlantic and were able to arrive on Iceland, increasing the genetic diversity of the population.

"To paraphrase Dr Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, 'Life will always find a way', and in this case, once the Little Ice Age began, arctic foxes didn't need much of an opportunity to colonise Iceland."

Dr Larson added that potential for animal migration had decreased significantly during the 20th Century, a trend which global warming had accelerated.

He said: "Without the sea ice, there will be no new fox migrants and thus the Icelandic population will continue to diverge from their mainland relatives."

Dr Larson added that the model the research used to determine the genetic diversity of the arctic fox could also be used to track the historical migration of other animals such as reindeer that are also found on Iceland.

Fla. ex-Gov. Jeb Bush working on immigration book

NEW YORK (AP) ? Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is a working on a book about one of the Republican Party's most contentious issues: immigration.

Bush has a deal with Threshold Editions, a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster, for "Immigration Wars: Forging An American Solution." Threshold announced Wednesday that the book is scheduled for next spring and will be co-authored by conservative attorney and activist Clint Bolick. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"Drawing upon history and American ideals, Jeb Bush and Clint Bolick outline a courageous and comprehensive strategy to bridge the partisan divide and set our nation's immigration policy on a just and rational course," Threshold said in a statement. "The book will present a comprehensive solution based on two core principles: Immigration is vital to America's future, fueling its growth, vibrancy and creativity; yet any true and enduring solution must adhere to the rule of the law."

The 59-year-old ex-governor has been urging his fellow Republicans to take on a more moderate tone on immigration, saying hard-line policies have led to lost elections. Bush himself was elected twice in a state with a substantial Hispanic population.

Books have become a standard way to advance a national candidacy and Bush, the son and brother of former presidents, has been widely discussed as a 2016 GOP contender should President Obama be re-elected. But he has disputed having such ambition, saying his goal was to help the 2012 Republican candidate, Mitt Romney.

Bush also helped write a book that came out in the mid-1990s, "Profiles in Character," published by his own Foundation for Florida's Future.
