Microsoft sets up new subsidiary, would like to meet open source types

It's been a mixed bag when it comes to Microsoft and open source involvement, but Redmond's now getting all enthused, setting up an Open Technologies subsidiary dedicated to making friends in open source circles. While of other parts of the Redmond behemoth will also continue to work on open source projects, this new team of up to 70 internally-recruited staff members will attempt to engage with open source communities "in a more clearly defined manner" across Microsoft's legion of departments. If this possibly means more off-the-rails Kinect hacks in the future, bring it on.

Soccer player defects from Cuba, requests asylum in US

Soccer player defects: A Cuban national soccer player disappeared while his team was playing in an Olympic soccer tournament in Tennessee.

Yosmel De Armas is a Cuban soccer player who has defected in order to seek asylum in the United States. While in Nashville, Tennessee last month for an Olympic qualifying soccer tournament, the Cuban midfielder was absent from his national team's final game against Canada, although he played on Saturday?s 4-0 loss to El Salvador.?

When asked why the player skipped the game, the Cuban national coach said De Armas was sick and remained at the team's hotel. However, when the team left Nashville, the promising soccer player did not accompany his teammates on their return trip to the island nation.

Although US officials refused to comment about the player?s whereabouts, it was reported that De Armas was last seen in Miami.?

"We're preparing an asylum application to file with the Department of Homeland Security," attorney Alex Solomiany said, according to Reuters.?

The Miami-based lawyer, who?described his client as "nervous," said De Armas is "alone here"?and that he was on his way to Miami at the time of the game, contrary to the coach's allegations.

A rising number of Cuban athlete defections are explained by several factors: the continuous financial hardship the populace faces in Cuba, the plethora of defection precedents that make the process look easy, and the luring prospects of a better life, all coalesce to urge young athletes to follow this path.?

"This is another case of a Cuban sportsman trying to get a decent life, to try to take control of his own career," Omar Lopez told Reuters.? Lopez is general director of the Cuban American National Foundation, a Miami-based organization of Cuban exiles who seek political change on the island.

Four years ago, seven members of the Cuban under-23 national soccer team also sought political asylum after competing against its US counterpart in Tampa, Florida.?

"Of course, my heart will be in Cuba with my family, but I want to have the freedom to better my life, to play professional soccer, to be the best I can be, and for that we had to make this sacrifice," Yenier Bermudez told the Miami Herald, according to ESPN.

Since the 2002 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) tournament in Los Angeles, a total of 15 Cuban soccer players abandoned their teams and requested political asylum in the United States.

Apple releases fix for Flashback malware

It promised earlier this week that a fix was coming, and Apple has now delivered a Java security update that is says removes "the most common variants of the Flashback malware." That update also reconfigures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets by default (in Lion, at least -- those still on Snow Leopard are advised to do that themselves), although folks can re-enable that functionality if they choose. As usual, OS X users can download the update through the Software Update application.

Scientists find possible cause of movement defects in spinal muscular atrophy

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

An abnormally low level of a protein in certain nerve cells is linked to movement problems that characterize the deadly childhood disorder spinal muscular atrophy, new research in animals suggests.

Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is caused when a child's motor neurons ? nerve cells that send signals from the spinal cord to muscles ? produce insufficient amounts of what is called survival motor neuron protein, or SMN. This causes motor neurons to die, leading to muscle weakness and the inability to move.

Though previous research has established the disease's genetic link to SMN in motor neurons, scientists haven't yet uncovered how this lack of SMN does so much damage. Some children with the most severe form of the disease die before age 2.

A research team led by Ohio State University scientists showed in zebrafish that when SMN is missing ? in cells throughout the body as well as in motor neurons specifically ? levels of a protein called plastin 3 also decrease.

When the researchers added plastin 3 back to motor neurons in zebrafish that were genetically altered so they couldn't produce SMN, the zebrafish regained most of their swimming abilities ? movement that had been severely limited by their reduced SMN. These findings tied the presence of plastin 3 ? alone, without SMN ? to the recovery of lost movement.

The recovery was not complete. Fish without SMN in their cells still eventually died, so the addition of plastin 3 alone is not a therapeutic option. But further defining this protein's role increases understanding of how spinal muscular atrophy develops.

"What all is lost when SMN is lost? That's something we're still struggling with," said Christine Beattie, associate professor of neuroscience at Ohio State and lead author of the study.

"We think part of the motor neuron defects that are seen in spinal muscular atrophy are caused by this decrease in plastin 3 we get when SMN is lowered. And when we add plastin 3 back to motor neurons we can rescue defects that are seen when SMN is decreased, suggesting that a decrease in plastin 3 is contributing to some of the disease's characteristics."

The study is published in the April 11, 2012, issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a fatal genetic disorder that strikes about one in every 6,000 babies born in the United States. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are many types of SMA, and life expectancy depends on how the disease affects breathing. There is no cure, but medicines and physical therapy help treat symptoms.

Beattie and colleagues began this line of work several years ago after a clinician compared the blood of siblings ? one with mild spinal muscular atrophy and one who was unaffected ? and found that the unaffected child's plastin 3 levels were higher than those in the sibling with SMA.

The Ohio State researchers are using animal studies to pinpoint the role of plastin 3 in this disease, and specifically how it relates to SMN, the protein known to be lacking in children with spinal muscular atrophy. Beattie is an expert in using the zebrafish model for studies of motor neurons and other aspects of the central nervous system.

She and colleagues ran a series of experiments to test the relationship between the SMN protein and plastin 3. In zebrafish genetically altered so they don't produce SMN, plastin 3 levels remained low, as well. When the researchers created opposite conditions ? lowering plastin 3 first in the fish ? SMN was unaffected. This showed that the plastin 3 decrease occurred only when SMN was lowered first. And when SMN production was stimulated in zebrafish initially lacking the protein, plastin 3 levels were restored as well.

"All this showed a relationship between SMN and plastin 3. It's not a random event," Beattie said.

Genes make proteins in cells over the course of numerous steps. Through additional experiments, the researchers determined that decreased SMN influences plastin 3 production at a late point in the process called translation, when amino acids are strung together to form the protein's initial shape. This means that the lack of SMN creates conditions in which too little plastin 3 is made to complete the protein's normal functions ? in these animals, the reduction was about four-fold.

Knowing this, Beattie and colleagues plan to study other proteins that may rely on SMN for their production.

"This is telling us that maybe SMN is affecting translation of other proteins that could be contributing to spinal muscular atrophy. That hasn't been shown before," Beattie said.

An examination of zebrafish motor neurons suggested that decreased plastin 3 affects these cells in at least two ways: by damaging axons, branch-like extensions that allow for communication among nerve cells, and by destabilizing synapses, structures through which those signals pass, Beattie said.

She and colleagues also examined fish behavior associated with protein changes. In zebrafish genetically altered so they don't produce the SMN protein and therefore have lowered levels of plastin 3, the researchers added back small amounts of plastin 3 to their motor neurons through additional genetic manipulations. As a result of the added plastin 3, the fish recovered their ability to turn and swim, movements they were previously unable to make.

"We've rescued axons, synaptic proteins and behavior all by putting plastin 3 back in motor neurons," she said. "That's very encouraging."

Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector

The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street) is the brightest pico projector we?ve tested, with a good range of connections including HDMI. It stacks up well against other pico projectors in connectivity, and has decent image quality but for one notable issue we encountered in testing. It?s worth a good look if you?re looking for a powerful pocket projector.

The PK320 is rated at 100 lumens, and has a native WVGA (854 by 480 pixel) widescreen resolution. The projector is quite compact, measuring 1.2 by 4.7 by 2.7 inches. Using our postage scale, I weighted the projector at 0.5 pounds, while adding the power adapter brought the total weight up to just under a pound. The projector also can run off an included, removable lithium-ion cell that can last 90+ minutes in eco mode and 50+ minutes in standard mode, according to Optoma. It can fit in my pants pocket easily enough, though it takes up much of the room.

This copper-brown projector has the look of a larger projector, with the lens near the edge of one of the long sides, as opposed to the ?light saber? appearance of many picos in which the beam emerges from the middle of the narrow end. The focus wheel is in front of the lens, and is tricky to use, even if you can avoid putting a finger into the light path. On one side is the tiny power button; in back are the ports, a good selection for a pico projector: a proprietary port to fit a VGA cable; mini-HDMI; micro-USB for file transfer; AV-in, which fits an included cable with 3 RCA plugs for composite video, and an audio-out jack for headphones.

On top of the projector is a 7-button control panel, backlit with blue LEDs (though you have to quickly make a selection as the buttons soon go dark). The projector includes a tiny remote the same 7 buttons, plus buttons for Off, Bright, and for accessing VGA, HGMI, and Video sources. Working the menus can be awkward, especially at first. The controls (both on the remote and on the projector itself) make use of the arrow keys, but more often as symbol keys to access specific functions than to navigate menus. For instance, the Home screen shows six choices, each identified by a symbol: the right arrow denotes Setup, the up arrow, Music, etc.?they?re useless as arrow keys here in that you can?t scroll anywhere, but they do take you to the functions they symbolize. This takes some getting used to.

You can run presentations computer free from the projector?s 2GB of internal memory, or off of a microSD card. In addition to showing video, you can play music, show photos, or display business documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF) from internal memory, memory card, or thumb drive.

I tested the PK320 from about 8 feet away from our test screen, where it threw a test image about 48 inches diagonally. Image quality suffered in modest ambient light, so it?s best used in a relatively small, dark room.

Image Quality

In testing using the DisplayMate ?suite, I found the PK320?s data image quality suitable for internal presentations, say to a small workgroup?provided that the room is dark and relatively small. You could use it for presenting to potential clients in a pinch, though you might not want to use it in presentations where sharp text or exacting color is paramount. The good news is that (with the exception of an issue that I?ll soon discuss) colors were bright and reasonably true, especially yellows, which often look dull or mustardy with DLP projectors. The projector also showed less of a rainbow effect? distracting red-green-blue rainbow glints, particularly in bright areas against a dark background?than most DLP projectors.

In our text testing, images showed some blur at the two smallest sizes in both black-on-white and white-on-black text, a bit more fuzzy than is typical of a data projector. The other notable issue involved tinting in images with white or gray backgrounds.

When I set up our test unit and turned it on, I immediately noticed a pink tint in the (rather busy) image?s upper left corner. It persisted even after I?d given the projector enough time to fully warm up. In DisplayMate testing, when viewing an image that should have been uniformly white, the tinting revealed itself more fully as pinkish on the image?s left side, and greenish towards the bottom center.

The issue was notable enough that I requested a second test unit from our Optoma rep. I noticed the same issue in the second projector, though it wasn?t as severe: Only a trace of the pink showed up (in the same location), but the green was still apparent, at nearly the same intensity as with the original test unit. It showed up against white to medium gray backgrounds in data images, and with Word and Excel documents. It?s hard to say how pervasive or severe the problem is among PK320s in general based on two test units, but it?s definitely an issue worth looking out for. Optoma says that it is looking into the issue, with an eye towards correcting any irregularities they encounter.

Video Quality

I tested video quality using multiple video sources over several connections, primarily HDMI. The Optoma ML300 is okay for short clips, provided that color fidelity isn?t critical. For the most part, colors were bright and well saturated, but some tinting was apparent at times. Flesh tones tended to look reddish, and some bright areas took on a greenish tinge. Also, there was some loss of detail in bright areas. One plus is that, as was the case in data images, rainbow artifacts were nearly nonexistent and shouldn?t be an issue except maybe for people particularly sensitive to the effect.

Other Issues

The audio from the PK320?s built-in 2-watt speaker is of modest volume, not bad for a pico projector but you?ll want to be close to the projector whether you?re watching a movie or playing music. Fortunately the unit has an audio-out jack for headphones or powered external speakers.

The LED light source will last an estimated 20,000 hours, so you should never have to replace bulbs. The projector is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

The market for micro-projectors has changed in the past year, with the influx of small LED-based projectors, palmtop sized or a little larger, in the 200 to 500 lumen range. Though there were always a few palmtop projectors, there?s now more of a continuum in side and brightness between pico projectors and ultra-portable business projectors.

The PK320 is among the largest and most powerful pico projectors, and its price is just slightly lower than the new micro-projectors (which cluster in the $500 to $600 range). The PK320 is smaller and lighter than these models, which weigh between 2 and 3 pounds. One drawback, though, is that it has an external AC adapter?which, unlike the projector, isn?t pocketable?while the LED micro-projectors have internal power supplies. The micro-projectors offer higher resolution, generally WXGA (1,280 by 800), and they?re considerably brighter than picos? though we haven?t been impressed with TI?s latest generation of DLP chips that many of them use, as they tend to introduce apparent scaling artifacts in data images that may result in softer focus.

If you?re considering the Optoma Pico PK320, you may want to look at some of these slightly larger and brighter micro-projectors such as the Optoma ML500 ?($650 street, 3.5 stars), Acer K330 ($600 street, 3.5 stars), and the more entertainment-oriented BenQ Joybee GP2 ($599 direct, 4 stars) as well. As for picos, the Editors? Choice Optoma Pico PK301 offers much of what the PK320 brings to the table at a lower price, though it lacks an HDMI connection and is only rated at 50 lumens. The Favi B1-LED-Pico ($280 street, 3.5 stars) is also a respectable choice, though it lacks a battery and so must remain yoked to a wall wart.

The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector is a powerhouse as a pico projector, bright and with a wealth of connectivity choices. However, it?s less impressive for its price now that bright micro-projectors are available for a little more money, and it still has a few image quality kinks to work out.

Having A Hard Time Finding Home Improvement Ideas? Look No ...

Consider cleaning the carpets on a regular basis, your home will feel fresh and clean. Particularly in the places where your family often walks, use shampoo and a deep cleaning treatment. Your house will not only have a cleaner feel, but it will appear newer.

Consider investing in dormer windows if you want to make better use of the space. Adding a dormer window will upgrade the look of the outside of your home as well as possibly add square footage. By spending a relatively minor amount of money, you can boost your home?s worth and gain useful extra room.

On major home improvement jobs, homeowners should always take information from their contractors with a grain of salt. Even the best contractors with the finest reputations can take advantage of a disinterested or easily intimidated owner. Contractors should raise any issues and discuss them with the homeowner before they ask for more money or an extension of the project schedule.

You can lower your monthly water bill by doing a few home improvement projects. Low-flow plumbing fixtures can greatly reduce your water usage without inconveniencing you. The new fixtures not only add to your property value by being modern and green, but they also will save you big money on your water bill.

Pick a reputable contractor that listen to your needs. While it?s important that you feel your contractor is trustworthy, it?s equally important that you?re confident that they are listening to what you?re telling them about the project. If your contractor isn?t paying close attention to the things you?re saying, then you may not be happy with the results of their work. Make sure that they pay very close attention to what you tell them.

Balance your fan! Improve the quality of sound inside your home! Usually, when a ceiling fan wobbles and makes noise, it requires balancing. You can just simply adjust the screws on the blades and on the motor. When you are adjusting the screws to your fan blades, also clean them; the dust can lead to imbalance which can cause noise.

Any home improvement you make should make sense in terms of your house?s location. Life in California will mean that installing or repairing the air conditioning might take precedence over a fireplace. Such a climate would also be well-suited to a swimming pool, which would be less appropriate in an area with long, hard winters.

Replace your standard porch light with a motion sensor porch light, as this will reduce electricity costs. You can turn the light on manually, and on many models, you can also adjust its sensitivity.

Putting up paneling on your walls can be a great way to bring a new look to your home. It?s fast, cheap, and easy to accomplish, and if you don?t like it, you can just take them down and repaint.

Are you planning a home improvement project? Look at items you already have to inspire your artistic imagination. Use interesting frames to match your decor.

Make sure that water does not get near the foundation of your home. Water can undermine the foundation and can cause cracks in the concrete. This may include gradation of your yard to slop to the road or even just lengthening your downspout further from your home.

An easy home improvement job is installing a new mailbox. This can do wonders for curbside appeal. Check with your city to be sure you are familiar with the regulations before installing your new mailbox. This is a job that will only take a few hours.

A washer and dryer combo unit should be considered if space is limited at your home. Select a tiny washer that can fit between two cupboards. A combo unit washer and dryer do both jobs.

When doing any projects that are near or involve a gas line, it is imperative that you shut the line down before beginning. Be extremely careful if you are going to work near any gas installation. You could start a fire and hurt yourself if you are not cautious.

When renovating your home, you should keep in mind that this should be a slow step-by-step process, and do not be wary of attempting new things. If it has been done in the past, you can do it too! Apply the information you learned in this article to ensure success with your next project.

Recent letdown raises stakes on Google's 1Q report

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google's first-quarter earnings should give investors a better sense of whether an unexpected drop in its advertising prices late last year was just an aberration or the start of a trend that could slow the company's growth.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The report, due out after the stock market closes Thursday, follows one of the biggest financial letdowns since the Internet search company went public in August 2004.

In the final three months of last year, Google Inc.'s net revenue fell nearly $300 million, or 3 percent, below analyst estimates. Adjusted earnings per share missed Wall Street's target by 10 percent.

The numbers alarmed investors. Google's stock price plunged by more than 8 percent in the shares' biggest one-day drop in nearly four years.

Most of the fourth-quarter concerns centered on an unexpected drop in Google's prices for search-driven ads. The so-called "cost-per-click" for those text ads declined 8 percent from the same time in the previous year. The average price in the October-December also dropped 8 percent from what advertisers paid from July through September.

But the decreasing prices were offset by substantial increases in the number of times that people click on the ads. That's important because Google usually gets paid only when an ad link gets clicked. The heavier clicking volume helped Google bring in more revenue, although not as much as analysts had hoped.

Wall Street has been swapping various theories for the drop in Google's ad prices. Some analysts believe it reflects a shift to more searches on smartphones, where advertising rates are lower than on laptop and desktop computers. Others are worried the downturn in ad prices is a sign that marketers are becoming less reliant on Google. It faces competition from Internet social networking leader Facebook Inc., which can collect more personal information and use that to more easily target prospective customers most likely to buy a particular product or service.

Google's first-quarter expenses also are likely to be a focal point of the report. Investors have been scrutinizing Google's expenses more carefully since co-founder Larry Page became CEO a year ago. Page has pledged to make expensive investments in employees and projects that he believes will boost the company's long-term returns. That philosophy can depress the quarterly earnings that propel stock prices.

In the first nine months of Page's tenure, Google added more than 6,100 employees to increase its workforce by 23 percent.

If he follows the script of recent quarters, Page will likely devote part of the first-quarter conference call discussing the growth of Google Plus, the Facebook alternative that launched last summer. Page has made Google Plus the centerpiece of his efforts to tie all of Google's services together. In an open letter last week, Page boasted that Google Plus had "well over" 100 million active users. He may provide more specifics in the conference call.

Analysts also will likely inquire about the status of Google's proposed $12.5 billion acquisition of cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. The deal was announced last August and has received all the necessary regulatory approvals it needs except in China, where Google's government relations have been strained since it moved its search engine out of the country two years ago in a dispute over censorship and computer security.

WHY IT MATTERS: As the Internet's main gateway, Google is one of the world's most powerful companies. Its fortunes and decisions have ripple effects on millions of people and companies.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts polled by FactSet expect earnings of $9.64 per share, excluding expenses for employee stock compensation, on revenue of $8.09 billion, after subtracting Google's ad commissions.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Google earned $1.8 billion, or $5.51 per share, on revenue of $8.58 billion at the same time last year. The results were clipped by a $500 million charge to cover a settlement of a U.S. Department of Justice case alleging Google had illegally profited from selling ads to unlicensed pharmacies.

Excluding stock compensation and the charge, Google earned $8.08 per share on revenue of $6.54 billion, after subtracting ad commissions.
