Read James Holmes? rejected grad school application letter

James Holmes, the former Univ. of Colorado graduate student accused of killing 12 people during last month's theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., had applied to the Univ. of Iowa's neuroscience program in 2011, but was rejected.

"Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances," Dan Tranel, neurology professor and director of psychology at the Univ. of Iowa, wrote in an email to the admissions committee published Thursday by the Denver Post.

The Jan. 30, 2011, email included Tranel's recommendations for seven applicants, including Holmes. Other candidates for the program were characterized by Tranel as "stellar," "solid," "solid, not spectacular" and "probably fine." Tranel advised the committee to offer admission to four, saying he was not sure about two others. Holmes, though, he was sure about.

Holmes applied to several other schools, including the Univ. of Illinois--which accepted him. But he chose to attend the Univ. of Colorado Denver.

According to his application, Holmes--a graduate of the Univ. of California-Riverside--wanted to pursue a degree in neuroscience because of his "foremost passions, the science of learning, cognition and memory."

"I have always been fascinated by the complexities of a long lost thought seemingly arising out of nowhere into a stream of awareness," Holmes wrote in his application letter. "I have an unquenchable curiosity, a strong desire to know and explore the unknown, and a need to persist against the odds."

Holmes--who gave himself the title of "aspiring scientist"--also recounted his childhood in California and his experience as a camp counselor for underprivileged children:

Behind the cluster of houses, rows upon rows of strawberries grew in the Salinas valley. As a child I passed these strawberry fields everyday on my way to school into the town of Castroville, "The Artichoke Center of The World". At school everyone wore a mandatory uniform consisting of navy blue jeans for the boys and a navy blue skirt for the girls, while everyone donned a white shirt. I didn't know at the time why uniforms were necessary but later discovered the uniforms were issued to curb gang rivalry. Looking back, my life could have gone in a completely different direction had I not possessed the foresight to choose the path of knowledge. I chose to appreciate an education, cultivating my mind. Since then I have strived to find new and better ways to learn, to improve. This is why I aim to attend graduate school and why my primary aim is to explore learning and memory.

In the field of cognitive neuroscience, researchers come from many different backgrounds and bring part of who they are to their investigations. I too will bring my past, specifically my strong moral upbringing. In addition, I will also exemplify my resolution and clairvoyance in problem solving. These abilities and more are typified in a summer job I performed as a camp counselor for underprivileged children.

Assuming a leadership role was something I was previously unaccustomed to but I took on the task with fervor. For the next week, twelve boys ages ten to eleven would look up to me for guidance and direction in Cheyenne cabin. Following them, nine more weeks with nine more groups. Every day there were activities for the kids but one of the activities "create your own," tended to turn into chaos. At first I chose to let the kids decide what they wanted to do and put it to a vote. Democracy right? Bad idea. Some wanted to go to the game room, others wanted to rest, some wanted to go to the field but there was no way to manage everyone if they split up. The outcome resulted in twelve kids arguing with each other, name calling and pushing. To resolve these types of incidents from occurring again I changed my strategy. "Create your own" became game room on Monday, sports on Tuesday, drawing on Wednesday... and if the kids were really good I devised something special for them like lizard catching. In the middle of that week when the campers were writing letters to home about their camp experience one of the little guys asked me how to spell amazing.

When it was time for each cabin to go home there were always kids telling me they wanted the same cabin next summer and if I would be back again to be their cabin counselor. At those moments I felt a sense of unparalleled accomplishment.

Other times I felt that I could be doing more. On average, two of the kids per cabin were clinically diagnosed with ADHD. One of the weeks, I mentored a kid with Schizophrenia. At 3:30 a.m. he woke up and vacuumed the ceiling of our cabin. These kids were heavily medicated, but this did not solve their problems, only create new ones. The medication changed them from highly energetic creative kids to lax beings who slept through the activities. I wanted to help them but couldn't. This is where neuroscience research becomes invaluable.

With a neuroscience doctorate there is even more to accomplish. Those most in need of an education including children and people with cognitive disabilities, can benefit from the results of research into the workings of learning, memory and brain-behavior relations. Indeed all aspects of society have the potential to gain from advancements in our understanding of learning and memory because we are all connected. We all share one brain, the human brain.

Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others during the July 20 massacre at a midnight screening of "A Dark Knight Rises"--several weeks after failing an oral exam at University of Colorado Denver. According to the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office, Holmes was barred from the school's Anschutz Medical Campus after he made threats in June.

Prosecutors also say Holmes told a classmate in March that he wanted to kill people.

Holmes' defense attorneys say he is mentally ill.

Retailer JJB Sports' Board puts company up for sale

On 19 July 2012, the JJB Sports plc announced that the deterioration in trading and the continuing poor? macroeconomic environment was likely to accelerate the timing of additional funding required by the? Company and that the level of headroom on its? working capital facilities and financial covenants would? be significantly reduced in the short and medium term.

The Company also stated that in response to these issues it was in discussions with its strategic partners. Since the date of this announcement, in the six weeks ended 26 August 2012, like for like sales have decreased by 3.3% and like for like cash margin has decreased by 9.5%.

The Company has continued its discussions with its strategic partners regarding a further capital raising and restructuring of its store portfolio to facilitate the turnaround of the group's trading performance.

However, following these discussions, the Directors do not believe that the Company will be able to raise the level of funds required to implement the turnaround. As a result, the Board has decided to conduct a formal sale process of the Company and now wishes to invite offers to support further investment in the Company, which may result in a sale of the Company or its assets.

The Company proposes to conduct the formal sale process through its adviser, KPMG LLP, who should be contacted by any interested parties. There can be no certainty that a proposal will be forthcoming or that an offer will be made for the Company or as to the level of any proposal or offer that may be made.

As at 28 August 2012 net bank debt was ?16.5 million. In addition, the Company has ?18.75 million of? Convertible Loan Notes outstanding and has also? drawn down ?1.1m under the trade loan facility.?

Given the level of current debt within the Company, there can be no assurance that any proposal or offer that may be made would attribute value to the ordinary shares of the Company.? The Board will update the market as to the status of the process in due course.

As announced by the Company on 9 July 2012, Bob Corliss will assume the role of Chairman with effect from 1 September 2012 and lead the Company through the sale process. Mike McTighe will stay on the board of directors as a Non-Executive Director until the conclusion of the sale process.?

What is being described as ?the world?s largest mezuzah? was affixed at the upper entrance to the Kosel Plaza by Kosel Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz and Mr. Flatto Sharon. It is one of 3 mezuzos designed by famed artist Salvador Dali.

Rav Rabinowitz explains that in addition to the obligation to affix a mezuzah on the gate leading to the Kosel, this special large mezuzah will also remind visitors of the need to accept the Yolk of Torah and Mitzvos.

Sharon cited the significance of the Kosel, which brings millions of visitors annually, adding ?I hope with all my heart that the world?s largest mezuzah will bring a ??? ???? for us all?.

The bronze mezuzah case is 1.4 meters long, 25 centimeters wide, and weighs an amazing 40kg. The actual klaf is 60 centimeters long, written by Rav Zalman Michshevili (????????) and it was checked by the Kosel Sofer Rav Yisrael Gotleib.

The death of infants and children?seems terrible because the?precious ones are gone without having lived a life for Jesus. And, of course, the death of parents and hard-working adults who are giving family members a livelihood and taking care of others are heroes we don?t want to lose. But as we age, the death of adults who are approaching the category of ?aged? is painful because we long to be close to those who have lived longer and learned more than we have.? Healthy or sick. Strong or weak. Christian or pagan. We all want to live.

But we die.

[Thought Questions for The Dead in Christ August 22, 2012]

1. The Second Coming. Is it any wonder that Paul?s friends in Thessalonica were fearful of death? Are we today immune from such feelings? Was there a conflict between their longing to live until Jesus? coming and their fear when they realized it wasn?t happening yet? Can you sympathize with them over their distress about dying? How did they respond to Paul?s promises that Jesus is coming back? Does your heart ever feel troubled about the prospects of the final days and the reward to the faithful? Do you ever hear yourself wondering, ?What if??

2. The Situation. Is it inevitable that every grouping of people?holds a belief system about death and what happens at the end of time? Why is death so important to us? Did the Thessalonian Christians feel as we do today that all who give their hearts to Jesus will be rescued from a world of sin? What was the main difference in their theology of death compared to what we teach today? What if the alive in Jesus would go to heaven when He comes, and those who had passed through death would stay on a sinless earth? Would that be so bad?

3. No hope. What happens to us when we lose hope? Have you ever spent time at the bedside of one who is dying? Do you hold onto hope that the loved one will get well even when every indication is that he or she will die soon? When my Mom?lay dying in the hospital, she would try to cheer her visitors by saying, ?Oh, yes, God will heal me. I know that. I just don?t know when.? Can we share that comfort with others? Or should we be careful about speaking of hope because we don?t know what God?s reward will be??How can we show comfort to those in our midst who are dying? Or to their families and friends?

4. Rising from death. Can you imagine the joy and songs of celebration when the dead in Christ are united with those who haven?t died and we all go to heaven together? What reasons can you think of why Jesus would plan the Second Coming in that way? Is Verse 14 of 1 Thessalonians 4?a bit disturbing to you? Does it sound like God is going to raise those who went to heaven when they died and bring them down to earth for the resurrection here? Interpret the word ?bring? in ?God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him? so that there is no contradiction with Paul?s assertion the all believers, resurrected or not,?will travel to heaven together.

5. Rising in Christ. Can Satan resurrect the dead? Does Jesus resurrect the wicked? Have you ever felt it would be so much better if you could live until the Second Coming? If so, what would be better? How does Jesus manage to raise to life people whose ashes have been mixed with soil or ocean water for thousands of years? And how can He raise people in a new body without disturbing their appearance so much that they can?t be recognized? Do you find comfort in the reality that until the resurrection, we who die before the Second Coming will know nothing about what is going on? Can we hold the hope of the resurrection without understanding how God can make it happen?

6. Comfort. How do we share comfort with others? You have no doubt lost dear friends and family members to the scourge of death. Did someone lend you a comforting thought or in some way help you look up to Jesus when this happened? Can we comfort without preaching? How? Since Jesus is coming to the earth and resurrecting the righteous dead and uniting the righteous living, why doesn?t He set up His kingdom on earth immediately? Couldn?t He destroy all the wicked and end everything at once? Why a thousand years in heaven before the Third Coming??Do you think there will be a role for comfort for or by us?during those ten centuries?

7. Changing the faithful. Do you know people who are blind, deaf, crippled, disfigured, in constant pain, missing an arm or foot or other body parts, or otherwise suffering? How can God instantly heal and restore all of those people at the same time? Are you perfect in body or mind? Or will God have work to do as the Master Physician to present you with a healthy body? Does it matter if we?don?t know how he?ll do that? Do thoughts of the Second Coming make life on earth filled with more joy and meaning?

Testimonial to Pat Randolph

Since I know that not all Property Profs also subscribe to the DIRT listserv (although you should), I wanted to share a post that Professor Roger Bernhardt from Golden Gate University posted to DIRT last night regarding the founder of DIRT, Professor Pat Randolph of University of Missouri at Kansas City.? Based on the flood of emails that DIRT has generated today, Pat Randolph has had an enormous impact on property professors and real estate lawyers across the country for many decades.? It is not often that we have the opportunity to thank someone for the contributions that they have made before they pass.? Like Roger, I wanted to share the information about Pat's condition so that if you have also been positively impacted by Pat, you have the opportunity to tell him so.

Although I do not know Pat Randolph well, I've seen him at least once a year, usually twice a year, throughout my career at meetings of the American Bar Association Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section.? He has always been warm, funny, and kind to me.? As his constant presence at ABA meetings demonstrates, Pat worked hard to create and maintain connections between academia and the practicing bar.? The DIRT listserv is one example of those efforts (and again, you really should join).? He will be missed.

Here's the text of Rogert Bernhardt's post to DIRT:

Fellow Dirters: Many of you may not be aware of the fact that Pat Randolph, the founder and moderator of Dirt is terminally ill from cancer and will only be with us for a few more weeks.

????

It is not easy to adequately describe Pat's enormous contributions to legal education, real estate law and the legal community. Dirt arose as an offshoot of the ABA's Quarterly Development Report, which Pat assembled and provided to us for years, and it was the best way I knew of keeping up with developments outside my turf.? Later, when Pat got Dirt underway, it was the Daily Developments' fully briefed and thoughtfully analyzed cases that he provided for us almost every day of the year - that quickly became our bread and butter source of information.? I cannot estimate how much discipline and how many hours that Pat had to donate to keep Dirt vibrant for so many years.

Pat also sat on the Executive Committee of the Real Property Probate & Trust Section of the ABA, founded a Legal Education Section there, and pried loose a Real Estate Transactions Section out of the AALS Property Section. He was at the same time going around the country giving his "Top Ten" talks to numerous bar groups, as well as being an entertaining speaker at frequent panels for the ABA, ACMA, ACREL, and PLI.? On top of all that Pat wrote Friedman on Leases and played a pioneering role in starting a real estate legal system in China, constantly going back and forth there and accommodating their students in his house in Kansas City) and writing books and journals on it.

What I particularly valued most of Pat's many activities was his effort to bridge the gap between law school academics and the practicing real estate bar. Before Pat, property professors wanted nothing to do with real estate practice, and lawyers typically couldn't even remember the name of who taught the course to them in law school.? ?? Pat got the two groups interacting with each other, for which I am truly grateful.

Since Pat sadly may not be with us much longer, I wanted him to hear my sentiments while he is still able to appreciate them. I urge the rest of you who knew and are similarly grateful to Pat to go on Dirt and tell him your feelings. I believe that will please him.

Oil company Shell has spent $383 million on security in Nigeria in two years, watchdog organisation Platform has said.

According to Platform, a London based non-profit, citing leaked financial data from Shell, the expenditure made between 2007 and 2009 is 40 per cent of Shell?s total expenditure on security globally which it says stood at $1 billion.

In a publication titled ?Dirty Work? detailing Shell?s global security expenditure between 2007 and 2009, which Platform says is based on internal financial data from Shell?s security department leaked to it, the data reveals for the first time how much Shell has spent on security, who benefitted and who bore the risks.

?In particular, the data shows the extent of Shell?s funding for government forces and other armed groups in Nigeria during a period of intense conflict in the oil producing Niger Delta,? it says.

Platform also says the $383 million Shell spent in Nigeria is an underestimate.? ?It does not include expenditure on the Shell operated Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Bonny. Nor does it include an estimated annual $200 million of ?community development? funds, which are frequently distributed to groups that threaten Shell?s operations, sparking serious violent conflicts. The leaked data covers all four Shell companies in Nigeria,? it says.

The Niger Delta in Nigeria where Shell and other oil companies operate has been plagued by tension and violence as local people demand a fair share of money made from exploiting oil from their land. The area is heavily polluted and the people are poor with very little or no infrastructure and jobs.

A study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)? released in 2011 made a call for the setting up of a $1 billion fund to clean-up the over 50 years of pollution of Ogoniland in the Niger Delta by the operations of oil companies.

According to UNEP however, full environmental restoration of Ogoniland may take up to 30 years.

UNEP, indicated that the assessment which has been unprecedented, was carried over a 14-month period and more than 200 locations were examined, 122 kilometres of pipeline rights of way were surveyed, more than 5,000 medical records were reviewed and over 23,000 people were engaged at local community meetings.

If you are starting a business, you probably understand the operations behind the scenes.

For example, bakery owner knows how to craft a decent cupcake, and a plumber knows the cause and cure for a leaky faucet. But for many business owners, financial management is less intuitive ? and seemingly less urgent ? than these day-to-day activities that directly impact revenue.

This is when you should call in reinforcements: your accountant.

Most accountants would love to take on the role of your trusted business adviser. However, the problem is, that many small business owners do not take full advantage of this professional associate, perhaps because of disinterest in the entire ?financial analysis conversation? or time constraints.

Based on our interaction with thousands of CPAs over the past decade, Sageworks Inc. recommends the following techniques to help you make the most of the time you spend with your CPA and receive more than tax returns:

1. Hire the best.

Be selective and choose the right accountant from the start. If they are to be a trusted business adviser for your company, then you should interview them like you would ? perhaps more than you would ? a typical job candidate.

Before engaging their services, ask questions about expertise and also about their communication style to be sure it corresponds to your operations. You should also agree in advance who the accountant will report to whether or not that will also include board presentations.

2. Communicate often.

Meet with them often enough that they know your business, its complexities and your struggles. If you only meet with your accountant at year end, they may not remember the details of your conversation and the details of your business.

The frequency of your meetings should depend on which services you have your accountant perform, but a good starting point is to meet with them once per quarter. The meeting doesn?t have to take all day. Call them now to get in the calendars for an hour or two. 3. Be prepared.

Prepare some questions in advance. Facebook is trying to speed along its acquisition of Instagram.

It's using a California law that lets it issue shares without requiring SEC approval, the Financial Times reports.

This isn't sneaky; it's smart.

A hearing with California's Department of Corporations is scheduled for August 29. If approved, Facebook could issue the shares the next day.

Instagram's 19 shareholders will have a chance to protest the deal, according to Mark Leyes, a spokesperson for the California department.

In April, Facebook agreed to buy Instagram for $300 million in cash and just under 23 million shares. At the time, that was worth $1 billion. At the IPO price, Instagram became worth $1.2 billion. Now, the deal is valued at $787 million.

Leyes said the fairness hearing was "limited in scope" and that the hearing was not the only step the companies needed to take.?Regulators are still investigating it.

UK authorities have just?signed off on the deal. But in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission appears to still be investigating. In May, the agency issued a second request for information.

Jeffrey Klurfeld, the FTC's Western Region Director, declined to comment on Facebook and Instagram, citing the agency's policy of not commenting on any investigations.

A Facebook representative said the company had no comment beyond its public filings.

Biden Clarifies 'Chains' Remark, Romney Calls Statement 'Outrageous'

In a speech in Wyethville, Va., on Tuesday afternoon, Vice President Joe Biden attempted to clarify comments he made at a stop in Danville that morning in which he said Mitt Romney will try to "put y'all back in chains" by deregulating Wall Street, a remark the Republican nominee called "outrageous." The vice president said he misspoke and intended to use the word "unshackle," which has been used by the GOP in the past.

"We don't have to imagine anymore. The details are there. Here's what Congressman Ryan said. He said, 'We believe a renewed commitment to limited government will unshackle our economy.' The Speaker of the House said, used the word 'unshackled' as well, referring to their proposals. The last time these guys unshackled the economy, to use their term, they put the middle class in shackles. That's how we got where we are," Biden said in Wyethville.

"I'm told that when I made that comment earlier today in Danville, Virginia, the Romney campaign put out a tweet. You know, tweets these days? Put out a tweet, went on the airwaves saying, 'Biden, he's outrageous in saying that,' I think I said instead of 'unshackled,' 'unchained.' 'Outrageous to say that.' That's what we had. I'm using their own words. I got a message for them. If you want to know what's outrageous, it's their policies and the effects of their policies on middle class America. That's what's outrageous," Biden added.

Biden's reference of Rep. Paul Ryan's use of the word "unshackle" comes from the Wisconsin representative's delivering the Republican response to the State of the Union in 2011.

"We believe a renewed commitment to limited government will unshackle our economy and create millions of new jobs and opportunities for all people, of every background, to succeed and prosper. Under this approach, the spirit of initiative, not political clout, determines who succeeds," Ryan said in the speech.

Biden's initial remarks sparked a wave of criticism from the GOP, even prompting Republican nominee Mitt Romney to respond, calling Biden's statement "outrageous."

"His campaign and his surrogates have made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the presidency. Another outrageous charge came a few hours ago in Virginia, and the White House sinks a little bit lower," Romney said in a speech in Chillicothe, Ohio, on Tuesday evening.

"This is what an angry and desperate presidency looks like," Romney added.

Paul Ryan Meeting With Sheldon Adelson in Vegas

DENVER - Paul Ryan meets with one of Mitt Romney's biggest donors Tuesday evening, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.

According to a member of the Romney National Finance Team, Ryan is talking with Adelson this evening at the Adelson-owned Venetian hotel in Las Vegas. The campaign would not confirm or comment on the guest list for what they are calling a Nevada Finance Leadership Event, choosing to call it a finance meeting instead of a fundraiser. The campaign says the difference is that tickets are not being sold and guests are not paying to attend. They also would not comment on whether Ryan is expected to speak at the event.

Romney fundraisers in public places, like a hotel, as opposed to a private home are open to a pooled press contingent. This evening's event is closed to the press.

Adelson and his wife, Miriam, have given at least $10 million to the pro-Romney superPAC Restore Our Future. They also gave $20 million to a superPAC supporting Newt Gingrich during the primary campaign. Adelson has vowed to spend $100 million to defeat President Obama. He recently accompanied Romney on his overseas trip to Israel.

In the 72 hours after Ryan joined Romney's ticket the campaign raised $7.4 million online with over 101,000 donations, according to Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul.
