NEW YORK (AP) ? Derek Jeter will miss the Yankees' weekend series against Minnesota with a strained right quadriceps, and New York cannot rule out a return to the disabled list.

After missing the first 91 games of the season because of a broken ankle, Jeter was activated Thursday and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout as the designated hitter against Kansas City. He injured the leg in his third at-bat.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday that an MRI showed a grade one strain.

"We'll have to give it some time and see how he responds," Cashman said.

New York is off from Monday to Thursday for the All-Star break, so the Yankees will have a week to decide whether Jeter has to go back on the DL. After the break, they start a series at Boston on July 19.

The 39-year-old shortstop broke his left ankle Oct. 13 in the AL championship series opener, then broke it again in April during his rehabilitation.

"I think the ankle is fine," Cashman said. "I don't want to say it's Father Time knocking on his door."

New York, which began Friday fourth in the AL East at 50-42, also is missing third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip surgery), first baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist surgery), outfielder Curtis Granderson (broken pinkie) and catcher Francisco Cervelli (broken hand). Teixeira will miss the rest of the season.

"It's something I think we've gotten used to this year," Cashman said. "He's one of the many."
