Review Guarding a Notorious Lady by Olivia Parker | Romance Books ...

A woman of pristine breeding, Lady Rosalind Devine is also an unrepentant meddler and snoop? which is why her brother refuses to leave her to her own devices while on his wedding trip. But Rosalind will not make things easy for any unseen, unwanted ?nursemaid??and vows to use her considerable wiles to expose her mystery guardian.

Nicholas Kincaid, the Marquess of Winterbourne, agreed to secretly guard his friend?s spoiled, stubborn sister, though her infuriating penchant for mischief is causing him to question his decision. Though bound by the rules of society?and friendship? Rosalind?s spirit and sensuality have sparked a fierce desire in Nicholas to play a very different role in her life, one that entails passion, ecstasy . . . and unavoidable scandal.

Guarding A Notorious Lady began as a cute historical romance novel, but the undertones present in this book just made me question why it was that way to begin with. Rosalind is a matchmaker, a nosy matchmaker who believes fiercely in true love, and refuses to marry without it. After watching her mother and father in their completely loveless marriage, she has decided that she will use her position to find a man she can love and who loves her before she ever agrees to marry.

Nicholas has recently inherited a title but he?s been Rosalind?s neighbor for years, they both have danced around each other, yet Rosalind was never shy about admitting that she liked and was interested in him. On the other hand, Nicholas wants nothing to do with love, his mother and father were a love match and when his mother died, his father fell into such a deep depression that it ruined Nicholas for love.

Guarding A Notorious Lady would be atypically cute Avon Romance were it not for one issue. They are thrown together because Rosalind?s brother does not belive that the ?gentlemen callers? that want to marry her, would be able to control themselves so he hires a secret security guard to keep Rosalind out of trouble. That?s just ridiculous. so the gentlemen who want to marry you are going to sexually assault, almost rape and kidnap you in order to force you to marry them in order to win some bet? That?s the most insulting thing imaginable, yet Rosalind views it as a mere nuisance and goes out of her way to get into trouble KNOWING that there is a very real threat of violence and/or the possibilty of being assaulted. Just ignorant and stupid, and it makes me think less of Rosalind?s character.

Rosalind is not supposed to be some new entree into society, she is on her 7th season which would make her about 24. She knows better than to enter the dark gardens or to go to certain areas of parties especially if being harmed is a possibility, yet she does this time and time again. Even when she has no idea that her protector is close by. Rosalind?s blatant disregard for her own safety makes me think less of her intelligence though she is written well, and is written to be smart, witty, gracious, beautiful and intelligent, and though I understand WHY Ms. Parker placed Rosalind in those situations, it doesn?t make it any easier to swallow.

Aside from the idiotic runs into danger, I thoroughly enjoyed Rosalind and Nicholas story, loving how they came together, how they fought their attraction to one another for yin and yang reasons, and I loved how they ended up together, overcoming their fears and learning to love together.

Overall Rating: B-
